Hopper is home and recovering from his neuter, but he tested positive for HEARTWORM DISEASE 😭😭😭

Heartworm treatment is rough and EXPENSIVE, especially since this is a brand new rescue. If you can help in any way, it would be very appreciated. We would like to start treatment as soon as possible!! 💕

Almost FIVE MONTHS after Aurora came into our lives, today I took the first pictures of Ace, Addie, and Aurora together!!!! Granted, these are not great pictures, I am so beyond grateful for them!! Thank you so much to AR’s K9 Obedience and Tracking for helping us make this happen 💕💞

We met with AR’s K9 Obedience and Tracking today to discuss Aurora's future training. We need assistance with her obedience, along with introducing her to Ace and Addie. He believes that she was trained in protection work, but trained very poorly which explains a lot of her behavior. I am so excited to work with Alex and get the knowledge and tools that we need to bring out the best in her (and future fosters at Mikaela's Mutt Motel)!

ACE DOES NOT HAVE CANCER!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got the call with the biopsy results. They said all they saw was gingival hyperplasia. They aren't sure why it grew so quickly in that spot, but they think the discoloration was from it squeezing between the teeth and it got blood in it and then ended up popping. We have to do a thorough exam on him once a week to watch for new spots, but fingers crossed that this truly means no cancer!! I am still concerned due to his enlarged lymphnodes, but I'm going to make an appointment with his regular vet to check on that

The Veterinary Oral Surgeon said that he is suspecting melanoma due to the pigmentation (how it turned black). This would be a completely separate and new cancer from the previous Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma. They put him under anesthesia and did a CT scan and xrays to make sure there was nothing in the bone. They are leaving the teeth for now and they took a biopsy of his gums. We will have those results in 7-10 days and then go from there.

If it is Melanoma, we will have to meet with a veterinary oncologist. Oral melanomas are considered aggressive tumors and typically exhibit a high rate of metastasis to local lymph nodes and the lungs. Even with complete removal of the local oral tumor, approximately 80-85% of dogs with oral melanomas will go on to develop metastatic disease. Treatment options will likely be further surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and/or the Melanoma vaccination.

Ace is turning 10 years old this year, and I will be considering quality of life as my number one priority.

I haven't posted anything about this yet because I think I have been in denial... It seems that Ace's Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma has returned. I am taking him to a veterinary oral surgeon tomorrow for removal and biopsy. I am assuming that they will at least be removing the two teeth that it is between. He had 13 teeth removed in 2019, along with part of his jaw. Please keep him in your thoughts 💗

Aurora has been a handful since her surgery. She has destroyed 2 cones and ripped out her own stitches... her legs have to be wrapped twice a day and protected with plastic bags and socks when she goes outside. She has been on sedatives too 🤦‍♀️ I took her to the vet today HOPING they would take the stitches out (it's day 10), but they said that they were not healed enough so I have to wait until Thursday 😭 Let's hope I can keep my sanity until then 🤞
