Sometimes you just have to trust your dog ๐
Ushi got here in April of this year and although a naturally very loving dog with his people, it was clear there was some work to do in the confidence-building department. The last few months have been filled with a variety of socialization and training trips - stores, parks, handling classes, and more. Progress was slow at first but these last two weeks I really began to see a shift in him, enough so that I said screw it, we're going to enter DOS and see what happens, with the only real goal to just make it a positive experience for him. I spent most of the 3hr drive there this morning worried that he might get overwhelmed, worried that it was too soon, that a negative experience might set all our training back - I doubted both myself and him.
We got there and spent the first half hour just doing decompression sniff walks around the show grounds. With it being a county fairgrounds, there were PLENTY of other animal smells to keep him occupied. Then we made our way to the main building where we again spent time walking through and settling amidst the chaos. It wasn't long until I could see him starting to relax, but through it all, he stayed focused and engaged, inhaling the bait, AND after a brief staring contest with a grumpy old shiba, the tail popped up and stayed up ๐ Children were screaming, stewards were running past him, dogs were barking, and yet the tail remained. Any shikoku owner will understand how crucial that is lol What I was seeing was basically a whole new dog.
Well, this new dog of mine walked himself into the ring showed beautifully with some very minor melting at the ๐ฅ check, and walked back out of the group ring with a Group 3 out of a โจ๏ธtrulyโจ๏ธ lovely and competitive lineup of 7 dogs. Group 3 might not seem like much, but coming from a dog who I at one point thought may never step foot in a ring, and who overcame so much to be there, it means the world. We still have work to do but this handsome boy made me so proud today. The judge absolutely loved him, as did the dozens of other people at the show who complimented him and asked to know more about the breed.
HUGE thank you to FLAEDA for a wonderfully run show and Judge Pamela Moore for seeing my boy ๐ฅฐ

It was all-around an excellent weekend and great to catch up with everyone! The dogs showed beautifully, and we got to check out some new trails and breweries in between. Forever thankful for my show crew who makes these events bearable and keep me sane lol

We will be looking for a co-own or guardian home for a lovely import male puppy out of titled and health tested parents. He will be ready to go home in early August. With the new CDC rule going into place this summer, this may be the last import opportunity for quite a while. If you're interested in getting involved with ethical breed preservation in any capacity, please feel free to send us a message ๐

After a few cameos in AKC, Masa (who still needs his person ๐) made his long overdue UKC debut and walked away with a Group 2 against some lovely dogs! Despite a mild snaffu in the morning (apparently "not before" times are not to be trusted at this club ๐) we had a lovely day catching up with some friends and meeting some new forbidden girlfriends ๐คฃ (Masa fell for a very fetching young keeshond lady ๐ ) Many snacks and pets later and it's safe to say he enjoyed himself lol

Last weekend we attended our first US NIPPO Classic and I am beyond thankful to both the Colonial Shiba Club for continuing to organize this event after a covid-induced hiatus, as well as to Judge Hidehiko Sato for taking the time to judge our dogs and share his knowledge with us. It was the largest entry of shikoku and kishu outside of Japan and we hope to continue that trend moving forward ๐
Between myself and my co-owners, we had 7 dogs entered - 3 in the Puppy Sweeps and 4 in the regular classes. All our regular class dogs placed and while none took best of breed (that honor going to our friends at Hachidorisou Shikoku ่้ณฅ่ ๅๅฝ ๐) in an event where the judge has absolutely no qualms about dumping not only entire classes but entire entries, any placement is a good placement lol The results of the event for the medium-sized breeds (chuugataken) are as follows:

Masa is 8mo old and currently looking for a co-own or guardian home. He's a sweet, outgoing boy, and is good with both strangers and new dogs. He's AKC-pointed, will start his UKC career this spring while still with me, and has earned his VSWB and TKN titles. Ideally the new owner would want to continue showing and/or participating in sports with him but if not, I would prefer that they be close enough (within 3-4hrs) for me to scoop him up for a weekend here and there to finish his titling. Any questions about him, please feel free to ask!

Not to be outdone by her brother in RI, Boku made her show debut in Novice Puppy this past weekend. I was expecting a wild little kangaroo that tried to climb in the judges skin but was pleasantly surprised that she acted like a real dog ๐คฃ A testiment to the work her guardian's put in taking her to both puppy and handling class!
Well that's a wrap on the first hog bay of 2024. The dogs are happy and tired after 40hrs on the road and a weekend spent baying hogs, and I couldn't be more proud of the effort they put in. Reviving a working line - getting dogs to do what they were bred to do both consistently and effectively, isn't an overnight process. It takes years and generations, trial and error in pairings, long hours training pups, longer trips to work them, but I love seeing them getting out there. Koji was the first of my dogs to show me he truly had the instinct to start trying. His daughter Mei, at her first ever bay, her first ever time seeing ANY hog, not just a wild one, proved that I'm moving in the right direction - and that a gritty little gyp can get it done, pulling off a 9.0 in the one dog ๐๐ Watching them work a hog together for the first time meant more than I can explain. I also say gritty in relative terms of course. Anyone who's seen a good catahoula work hogs knows what grit is and that the hog matters more than life to them. They have a style unique to the breed, and a shikoku will never be that. They have far too much self-preservation to get flung 15 feet across a pen, a trait that will keep them alive in the woods, and one I wholly appreciate, but it will be interesting to see how their unique style will develop - to see what "grit" looks like in my own breed. Thankful beyond words for these dogs, and for owners and friends who support us on this journey โค๏ธ *To anyone who thinks this video doesn't seem like much, put your own dog against an angry, 300lb animal and see how they do. I can promise not an insignificant number of dogs don't want anything to do with it ๐ ETA - Those familiar with hog hunting will have picked up on this but to those that aren't, this style of baying would have caused the hog to run were it in the woods. To effectively bay up a hog, the dog(s) needs to learn to stay at the head. Much of this is genetics, but a lot is also ex
What I wouldn't give for the ability to sleep through noise ๐ฅฒ Desensitizing the nuggets to some common, loud noises they may encounter. (I swear it sounds so much louder in this video than it was in person ๐คฃ)
Koda had his AKC debut at the Taconic Hills KC Open show this weekend and rocked it ๐ Hammed it up with the judges, settled beautifully ringside, and ate ALL the treats lol He took 1st in Class/BOS both shows but no points earned as the only male entered. #ๅๅฝ็ฌ #shikokuken #akc #showdog #primitivebreed #nihonken
Working on building duration in the crates ๐ (and also learning that the food your sibling has is NOT magically better than your own ๐คฃ)
A few days late to post but this is the next set of barrier challenges for the puppies. Where before they had to go up and over, now they have to go around. Without fail, there's always one who tries to bull their way through and one that takes an extended detour to the food ๐ This will progress in difficulty as both the food and puppy get moved farther from the edge of the barrier. Small but satisfying redemption arc - our last puppy from the first challenge video figured this one out pretty easily (4th puppy) ๐
Today marks the start of the various barrier challenges the puppies will face. This is the first time they've been given an obstacle they need to overcome to get to their food and while it may seem simple at this stage, barrier challenges where the puppies are rewarded for their efforts (in this case with dinner) promote problem solving, critical thinking, and also help build confidence. It's important that the puppies figure the challenges out for themselves even though it's so tempting to try and help them. Challenges such as these combined with other aspects of the early socialization program lead to dogs with improved ability to learn and remember, dogs that are more emotionally stable, and dogs with better resiliency to stress.
A lesson in stream crossing. If you're going to follow the big dogs to the far side, you'd better be able to get yourself back ๐ #shikokuken #adventuredog #hikingdogs
First time trying a mash for the puppies. I was pleasantly surprised that they managed to eat more than they wore ๐
Ring Practice with Mei
Quick video of Mei struttin' her stuff in the ring from this weekend since you can't upload photos and videos together in the same post ๐๐ Edit: I have absolutely NO idea what that alien noise in the background is ๐คฃ
Vacuum vs puppies
The only problem with raising puppies to be curious and confident around things like the vacuum . . . is getting them to move so you can actually vacuum ๐คฃ
Resource Guarding Prevention
Just a little resource guarding prevention protocol for this morning. Resource guarding is a totally natural behaviour for dogs and exists as a survival tool - a level of communication that exists between dogs to say "don't touch what's mine." We are not dogs though, and have different methods of communication as well as different expectations. To that end, it's important to teach puppies that not only is having a high value treat taken away NOT threatening, it can actually be very rewarding. The puppies caught on pretty quick and by the end were just manding for the treat rather than going back to their bone ๐
