To all my friends who have also lost a loved one this year.

Dascha is helping me quite a bit. Considering that the plan for me to have her was ‘literally’ conceived months before Daisy got sick you have to wonder on why things happen when they do….

2024 was an absolute s**t year. Here’s hoping that 2025 is an improvement and that certain people get the new year that they deserve.

Thank you to my friends and family for their support throughout the crap! You know who you are.

Two weeks after Dascha arrived and she’s settling in very well. With the decision about Daisy hanging over me things were a little bit difficult but all is well now.

Today Dascha bought J a present in the form of a snail shell.

Later I started the tuning in to the clicker. I don’t think it will take her long to get the association with the “click” and a treat.

After that I did some vacuuming and although she was slightly wary (it is VERY loud) she followed Mishkas example and kept out of my way. After I turned it off she went and inspected the vacuum cleaner by herself.

Then we all went outside and she laid on Daisy’s bed and is currently sleeping processing everything she has experienced.

The world keeps turning and your animals depend on you so today Dascha and I went to the Swiss Village just around the corner.

She is just over 9 weeks old so I only have until she’s 12 weeks old to get all her primary socialisation in.

She was pretty outgoing, wanting to speak to everyone and met quite a few children who were lovely to her. Elise Hinde….

She’s currently fast asleep in her crate processing everyone she has just experienced.

Following on from the previous post…

For those that don’t know, Daisy had been having funny episodes since end of September. At first weeks between them, then days, then every day and then several times a day. There is a video down the scroll if you want to watch.

Dr Dave had done bloods as I knew that weight loss without a reason (down from 23kg to 17kg) despite extra food was not good as well as the episodes which I had videoed to help with a diagnosis..

All the bloods apart from the blood sugars were normal. Her blood sugar was 1.9 less than 2 hours after eating probably 750g of barf mix. (normal range for dogs is 4-8).

This pointed to a diagnosis of insulinoma, a tumour on the pancreas that means that too much insulin is secreted. There was a couple of treatment options for that but a follow up blood test to show the actual levels of insulin in the blood was normal.

That makes no sense so the differential diagnosis of a tumour somewhere was more probable.

She was not going to get better. Giving her honey on crackers helped but was only a temporary fix. I was never going to submit a ten year old dog to any invasive treatment.

After much thought and talks with several knowledgeable people I made the decision….

I knew that it was the best for her and she was ready. I didn’t “need” to know a diagnosis and nor did she. She walked into the vets wagging her tail happily, was pleased to see Dr Dave and had no fear or distress.

Felicity stepped above and beyond as did the rest of her family. She was my advocate when I stumbled over my words trying to articulate to Dave what I wanted.

I was able to leave the vets holding an empty collar but knowing that Felicity and Troy would take the best of care of her… they took her to their home and buried her that evening.

Yesterday was a very sad day. Daisy was sent on her way in the kindest possible way by Dr Dave at the Animal Medical Centre with my dear friend Felicity at my side.

Daisy’s health had been going downhill fast and yesterday was the day. She was ready. The moment she was on the fleece on the table she lay down and spent some time getting tummy scritches before Dave did his thing kindly and gently. There was no distress…

Mine were the first hands to touch her when she was born and the last to touch her as she left…

An early update today.

Dascha is settling in nicely, not really toy or treat motivated but “me” orientated!

She constantly “mands” in front of me wanting attention and sits quietly until she gets it! Even when we are trying to walk around the garden!

After the first two days working consistently on the crate training she has had a little more time in other parts of the house. These pics are from last night.

She sleeps from around 9:30pm until 8am ish. A couple of wees overnight but so far, no poo in the crate.

Day 3 with Dascha.

We went to terrorise Legana! She was a bit barky and stressed but wanted to go up to everyone she saw to say hello!

So lots of good interactions. Not scared of the cars, registered at the vets, all good. Even got to go into the pharmacy for a few minutes!

Daschas second day with me. Today she stood and watched Boe chainsaw and heard the wood chipper going full pelt. 100% not bothered!

Not enough hands free to get her in the pic too but she was there! She even got to say hello to him when they finished the job.

Still working on the crate training. Still barking each time she’s put in there but I’m pretty sure that the barking time is shorter each time, maybe?
