PLEASE ADOPT and foster if you can't. The kennels are sweltering hot and 200 dogs is too many for the shelter. They're doing an AMAZING job of getting all those dogs out of their kennel as often as they can and cooling them off, but it's just a bad situation all round.

Take a dog home for free, for now, or forever. They've got puppies, well-trained dogs, a variety of breeds, and volunteers and kennel staff who know these dogs very, very well and can help match you to the perfect pup for your lifestyle.

Can you help save a life? These dogs are at risk of euthanasia in Alachua County. Each has had a very long stay at the shelter and is desperate to get out. Is there space at your house? All expenses are paid.

Alachua County Animal Services is overflowing with dogs, with over 25 dogs currently in crates since the kennel runs are full. ACAS is doing their best to avoid euthanizing adoptable dogs, but these kinds of numbers stretch staff and facilities to their limits.

There has never been a better time to volunteer. Dogs in crates need to be walked twice a day. Dogs in runs need enrichment to keep from going crazy from boredom and lack of interaction. Whether you want to walk dogs or play with dogs in the yards, ACAS needs your help.

If you have any questions at all or are having trouble learning how to get involved with volunteering at ACAS, please don't hesitate to reach out to me.

Here's a little bit of information about walking dogs and playing with them in the yards.

Sometimes people ask me why I volunteer at a place which can be so sad. My answer is easy: the dogs. Once you get to know just one of these dogs, you won’t be able to forget them. Here are some ways to get hands on with these awesome dogs. WALKING SHELTER DOGS Dogs with … Continue reading Hands ...

Rio was adopted! Wishing him all the fun in his new home.

Playgroups sure do a good job of revealing a dog's goofy side, along with all kinds of important information about how they interact with other dogs. As you can see from these pictures, Rio at Alachua County Animal Services loves boisterous play, and he's a real comedian.

Rio is the white and tan dog with the blue collar and the red leash. He's two years old and has been at the shelter for about a month. I took these pictures during an incredible seminar by Dogs Playing for Life that ACAS hosted. I can't say enough good things about this program. They teach animal shelter staff and volunteers how to read dog language, identify play styles, and conduct playgroups like these.

If you'd like a fun-loving young dog who clearly thrives in the company of other dogs, Rio is your dog. ACAS is full right now, so please if you can consider adopting, do so.

If you'd like more information about Rio or you'd like to meet him, contact Alachua County Animal Services.

Kitten season is in full swing, and your local Animal Services, Alachua County Animal Services has A LOT of kittens who would benefit from being fostered. Never fostered before? You might be surprised by just how simple it really is. I fostered my first litter of kittens last kitten season, and I had a blast. Read about my experiences here: https://rescuedoghome.com/fostering-shelter-kittens/

Whether you want to foster an entire litter, like I did, or you'd be more comfortable with a single or duo, ACAS has kittens for you! Kittens benefit tremendously from fostering. They become socialized with people and any other pets that you may have and experience less stress compared to being at the shelter.

You don't need to foster for long, just until kittens are big enough to be spayed or neutered and put up for adoption. If you find that fostering isn't working out for you for any reason, just let ACAS know and bring them back to the shelter. Please contact Alachua County Animal Services or just drop by if you'd like to meet some of the kittens who need a foster home. If you have any questions about what fostering kittens is like, don't hesitate to reach out to me!

Houston has been fostered!!

We're so glad that Jenny (A614438) has found a home! We are so hopeful that Houston (A614621) will also find a home of his own. This sweet, loving, dog is so scared at the shelter. He's only getting worse. The last time that I was there he was too scared to come to me on the outside of his kennel, but so, so happy to see me when I came around the inside of his kennel.

I made him this flier, which will be hung on his kennel soon in hopes of getting people to look closer at him. Please share this loving dog, and if you have room in your heart and home, please, please, please consider fostering him. He's so loving, awesome and gentle with kids, great with other dogs of all sizes, calm, and well-behaved. He seems to be potty trained and non-destructive of his bedding. The wonderful rescue Ewenity Farm Herding Dog Haven is happy to take Houston and cover all of his expenses with a dedicated foster.

Scully (CHUA-A-35526)

Scully has been adopted!!

Poor Scully is STILL searching for a foster or forever home. The Humane Society of North Central Florida has listed her as a priority for a foster home. Do you have room for this sweet girl? She gets along well with most dogs, is laid-back and hapy to chill, and she's quite small. She's done well in a number of foster homes and is wonderful on outings.

Scully was a volunteer favorite at Animal Services and now she's very loved at the Humane Society, but nothing is like a home of your own. Scully has been in the system for a very long time, and she deserves much more. Please share. If you have friends who aren't on Facebook, share the link to the website.

These dogs have been housed at Camp McConnell for over two months in crates due to another disease outbreak at ACAS. They have been medically cleared by UF, have been spayed and neutered by veterinarians with Humane Society's PetSnip, and are now ready to go to their loving, forever homes! Today is a free adoption event where you can talk to many volunteers and staff and meet your perfect match. Please go visit Camp McConnell for today's adoption event until 5:00 pm to adopt your newest family member!

We have some amazing dogs who are ready to love you AND who need big help!

The veterinary students in the University of Florida Student Chapter of the Association of Shelter Veterinarians are holding an emergency adoption event at Camp McConnell in Micanopy, Florida, which is the site of an old YMCA camp.

Due to a respiratory disease outbreak, Alachua County Animal Services had to house these 40 dogs in crates at this temporary shelter for the past two months. Needless to say these great pups are eager to move on to their new homes!

The main shelter does not have enough space to absorb these dogs, so they definitely need support from the community to start their new lives.

The adoption event is being held Saturday, March 7, from 10am to 5pm at Camp McConnell (210 SE 134th Ave, Micanopy, Florida). Adoption fees are waived to approved homes.

Please help get the word out and if you’re located in the area, consider checking out one of these pawesome pooches pronto!

Houston (A614621)

Houston had an awesome day out with me today. He was such a good boy while I worked on the patio at Maude's Classic Cafe. He met dogs of all sizes and loved everyone he met. Houston is such an amazing dog. See all the pictures and adorable videos by following the link.

Houston (A614621)

Artie (A574727)

I took Artie out for the first time in awhile, and he about broke my heart. This shy boy has really deteriorated at the shelter. He needs someone to take extra time with him, go very slowly and win his trust back. Right now, he does not seem to trust people. He wouldn’t come to me in the kennel, so I asked Jane to help me get him out. He was extremely hand shy once on the leash. He just tried to get away from me while I walked him around the yard.

Artie finally began to relax and follow me after awhile, but he wouldn’t let me touch him and backed away and fought the leash when I tried to approach him or even made eye contact. He warmed up with dogs in the pens next to him. He really seemed to like a little girl in the pen next to us. He sniffed her and wagged his tail at her, and then chose to stand next to the fence by her.

After meeting a couple of dogs, he finally chose to stand by me and finally let me touch him. He tolerated me petting him, but he gave me no social signals and didn’t seek out my touch.

I left him lying peacefully on a blanket in Khendrea’s office, but it was still very hard to walk away without getting any response from him. I’d been going to take him for a day out, but he’s just too reactive for that right now.

I’m really putting out a personal plea for this guy. If anyone could take the time to go slowly with him and win his trust back, it could save his life. This guy was adopted from ACAS as a puppy and changed hands quite a few times before finally ending up back here again. Months in the shelter and the quarantine have quelled what little trust he had left. He can be a playful, loving dog again, but he needs your help.

SCULLY (CHUA-A-35526) has stolen our hearts!

Scully is listed as a 4 year old, spayed, plott hound mix. She is about 40 pounds but stands rather short! This bundle of love has been in and out of the county shelter system for one year now. She was recently pulled by The Humane Society of North Central Florida, where she will now receive daily yard time, daily enrichment, and have the chance to meet other dogs! Scully made one buddy today and is already doing much better. We could not be more grateful to our Humane Society! Scully would love to finally have a place to call her forever home, and she would really love a place where she could be queen of her castle. Previous fosters and adopters have said she rarely barks and is housebroken and crate trained. She also loves to cuddle. Scully was also chosen by the veterinarian to go through our PAWS dog training program with our county jail since she was a long term pup, and at the jail, she was named “Bella” and quickly became a fan favorite! ❤️

We love Scully and her resilience, but after a year of coming in and out of the shelter system, she deserves her forever home.

Interested in adopting this sweet, sweet girl? Contact HSNCFL, or fill out an adoption application here: https://www.humanesocietyncfl.org/adopt/dogs-puppies/…

Have questions about Scully? Stories you want to share about how wonderful she is? Let us know! 👇👇👇

January
Scully is in foster care through the Humane Society! Here is what her foster mom has to say about her: Hi! I’m fostering a sweet doggy named Skully right now. She’s the sweetest, most well behaved dog. I am planning on adopting Skully but I have to fly back to New York on Monday and will be there until January 6 and I sadly can’t take her. I’m looking for a temporary foster until then. Skully is crate trained, house trained, doesn’t bark, or growl (but she does nibble like a puppy when she is excited). Skully’s not good with other dogs (not sure about cats or young children). She is very social but it shy when first adjusting to a new setting. Let us or the Humane Society know if you can help out with fostering Scully temporarily.

Bella, or Scully, has been at the shelter since September 21, 2019. She is a sweet, loving little girl. We have learned that she suffered a head injury at a young age, resuling in the dent in her head, but that doesn't stop her from being a happy-go-lucky, outgoing young lady. She went through the wonderful Paws on Parole program, but unfortunately she has not been adopted. She's back at ACAS, and she really needs a home. This lovely lady will rub against the gate at ACAS in her enthusiasm to make contact with you. Please meet her and foster if you can't adopt.

July 29 2019: from an outing from the Paws program: Bella tried really hard to convince me to take her home, instead of back to the jail, after the meet and greet... and it almost worked. She's such a sweetheart 🥰

July 9 2019: Paws on Parole. Bella is a sweet well mannered young lady who is looking for her furever home next week. She will be graduating from the Paws on Parole training program next week and is waiting on someone to come see her preform and then bring her home.
She’s been at the jail for 8 weeks now and is one of the best dogs I’ve met out there. If you would like to meet her please let me know... she’s really special and deserves a nice family home.

September 30 2019 from ACAS: Two year old BELLA is our perfectly imperfect girl with a small dent on her head. We're not sure if she was born with a slightly dented head or if it was some trauma she endured before she came to us. Regardless, Bella is a very sweet, medium sized girl (around 35-40 lbs). When she first came into the shelter months ago, she was pretty shy, but over time she has allowed for us to see her quirky personality! She loves the pool and loves people---and because she loves people so much, she is a volunteer favorite. She knows basic commands, like sit and shake.

Bella's definitely had some bad luck in her lifetime, but we'd love to finally find her a family that can love her, imperfections and all. There are no perfect dogs nor perfect people--just perfect matches!

Bella was adopted in early August and returned recently as she and the other dog in the family weren't getting along. Since coming back, she has been a little more stressed than normal so we've love to find her a foster home to relax or, better yet, an adopter.

ACAS April 29th SCULLY (A598565) is adorable! She is a 2 year old plott hound lab mix and is medium sized. Scully has been great around people and kids, and has a funny, playful puppy personality! If you’re looking for a houndy girl that’s sweet, charming and witty, Scully is your gal

ACAS April 9th 2019 SCULLY (A598565) is a 2 year old plott hound lab retriever mix! She is a small-medium girl and is just so sweet. She enjoyed painting with us this morning, and although she is very proud of her art can’t you see the sadness in her eyes that she hasn’t found a forever home yet?

August 7th 2019 Today on our page, we featured our two longest term residents: Hildy and Scully! These two fab girls have been waiting since February to be adopted! Both are good with other dogs and great with people. Hildy is higher energy and is ready to go on adventures with you! Scully is a bit more reserved and while she loves a good play session too, she’s a lover! https://www.facebook.com/AlachuaCountyAnimalServices/videos/1336290519851830/

Are you looking for a dog who will be a social butterfly and introduce you to all kinds of new people? Melody might be your girl. This playful dog just can’t get enough of people. She loves kids, women, men, and probably people with three heads, considering how friendly and outgoing she is. Melanie Bracewell: Call yourself an animal lover? Get involved!

Here is an article in the Gainesville Sun from one of our local volunteers. Melanie says, "There are critics who mostly complain anonymously online about practices at shelters/rescues and the people who are out there actually doing something to enact change." Then she goes on to describe just how we can open our minds, hearts, wallets and more to help our county's homeless dogs and cats.
Thanks so much for writing this Melanie, and for caring deeply for our homeless pets.

As a volunteer and foster for local animal groups, I have seen a large divide between people who identify as animal lovers. There are critics who mostly

Scully is a 3-4 year old spayed female listed as a plott hound mix. Scully was in foster care for a period of time. Here is what her foster mom had to say:

She’s the sweetest, most well behaved dog. Scully is crate trained, house trained, doesn’t bark, or growl (but she does nibble like a puppy when she is excited).

Scully was pulled from our county shelter after being there for almost one full year by the Humane Society of North Central Florida. Scully was also sent to PAWS for an 8-week training program. She was an absolute favorite and completed her full training. At that time, she enjoyed playing with male dogs and some female dogs. Scully would benefit from slow introductions to new animals and new situations.

Let the The Humane Society know if you can assist with fostering during this time, as Scully would love to spend more time in a home 🙂

Please share Scully so she can finally leave the shelter system for good!

Consider fostering a long term resident, even for a brief period. It can make all the difference in their life.
This Thanksgiving, we're thankful for Luther's foster. So many volunteers have gotten to know and love Luther. We've become increasingly worried as he's spent day after day in the shelter for over 100 days. Seeing him thriving in a home, even briefly, is just incredible.
Opening up your heart and home, even briefly, to a dog who has been at the shelter the longest has its challenges. But boy, does it make a difference to the dog. This Thanksgiving, Luther has a lot to be thankful for, and so do we.

ACAS Alum DENVER asked his mom if he could have a friend over for the weekend and for Thanksgiving, and so long term resident LUTHER is now enjoying a break from the shelter! Luther (the darker red-brownish dog) is a great pup and he and Denver played for hours and then napped for hours. The great life of a dog!

If you’re interested in giving a dog a break from the shelter, let us know! We’re open today from 10:30-5:00 and can find a great match for you!

22/11/2019

Harper is a sweet, ~2-4 year old mama dog that came to our shelter on 8/13/19. Harper loves to play with Rocko, another long term resident. Our veterinarian and kennel staff have put Harper in multiple playgroups and she has done well so far. She LOVES toys. She has met children of all ages, and has been patiently waiting for 100 days for her forever home! She was recommended for placement in PAWS on Parole in order to further her training and increase her chances of adoption and get her out of the shelter. Please share and help us get this sweet girl out of the system and to her forever family in time for the holidays! By then she will have basic training completed and you will have the support of our Paws on Parole family!

21/11/2019

Kate is a low-energy, 8-year-old, spayed senior girl who loves to just hang out. She arrived at Alachua County Animal Services during a chaotic time, and was not able to receive much attention. She sometimes does not show well in her kennel, but it is all bark. She is a senior sweetheart who needs a family to give her a comfortable place to call her own. She has enjoyed spending time with volunteers and their children, and is becoming more fearful inside of the shelter. She would benefit from leaving ASAP. Please share Kate's sweet face so we can find her the forever home she deserves!

Give a long-term resident a break for Thanksgiving!

No one should spend Thanksgiving alone - including our shelter animals! ACAS is looking for foster families that are not traveling and are willing to pick up a dog on Tuesday, November 26th or Wednesday, November 27th and foster until Saturday, November 30th. We provide all
supplies. You provide the loving home. This program extends to Alachua County residents only. Our staff will help you find the right fit for your home situation. While the dog is in your home, we encourage you to help find your foster dog a furever home. You can promote your foster dog through social media, in your neighborhood, at work and with friends and family. We would love nothing more than to give the gift of a loving home this Thanksgiving holiday to our four legged friends.

Adoption fees for any dog fostered over the Thanksgiving holiday will be waived. Please share this post with anyone you think may be able to foster. Email questions to [email protected]. Thank you!

SCOOTER (A609778) absolutely LOVES to snuggle and cuddle! He's low-key, low-energy, loves food, enjoys lounging around to watch scary movies and likes to get dressed up. Can you help him find a loving home by Halloween so he can celebrate with his new family?!
