Wynterwood Farm Avian Rescue WFAR was established as a private rescue in 2005, but became a registered 501(c)(3) in 2022.

Wynterwood Farm Avian Rescue came about in 2022 after many years of private rescue activity starting in 2005. We now provide a forever home for parrots of all sizes, along with various other non-standard "pets" on a 10.5 acre sanctuary in Washington County, Texas within a few minutes drive of Washington-On-The Brazos State Park.

“Even if you don’t have context for how hot that is—and believe me, it’s hot—Houston has never had a heat index of 115 degrees in May before. Moreover, Hobby Airport did not have a heat index that warm during all of last summer, which was excruciatingly hot. You’ve got to go all the way back to August of 1998 for a reading that high. “

In brief: Yes, you are not crazy. Monday did feel incredibly hot outside, and the smoky haze from agricultural fires in Central America did not help. We’re now going to see a pattern change t…

In addition to zoo quality food and premium food with dried fruit and veggies, our birds also get fresh fruit, greens and veggies at least twice a week. It’s a big job, but worth seeing them happy with the treats!

Checked in on all the birds at the beginning of what looks to be a warm, but beautiful Labor Day weekend. Stopped at the grocery store to get lots of special fresh treats for them! The chickens presented us with nine eggs as a thank you!

Last weekend we acquired a “swamper” to help keep the parrots cool. Having evaporative cooling will be MUCH better than just fans. Thanks to Ace Hardware on Jones Road for their help with this.

We got it installed, but man was it HOT on the treehouse level between taking out the fans and getting the swamper primed and cooling!

We’ve been asked to rescue a pea hen that has taken up residence at our building off Woodway. FIRST, we have to gain her trust, because we’ll only have one shot when the time comes to attempt a catch and rescue. Did you know pea hens LOVE blueberries?

We’ve had so much going on at the aviary over the past month. It will take multiple posts just to catch up. Early in August, we had work done to erect a new small bird aviary that’s still a work in progress. With the heat, we have to work in stages. The expectation is to have it ready for occupancy in early spring.

Thankful Sean Benbrook, with Enki’s Garden was available to lead the charge getting the structure up and in place. Next step (when it cools down a bit) will be framing for the wire mesh and the door, as well as final anchors.

Looks like we're going to have a new rescue if we can successfully catch this little girl. She's by herself far from the roaming flock off Fondren almost three miles away where the old Vargos restaurant was.

Had a busy weekend putting up a new small bird aviary that was donated to us. Sean Benbrook (Enki’s Garden) made it happen while Steve and I did our best to help. Man, was it HOT!!

Protective wire mesh, ground anchors, door framing, pavers for flooring, interior decor, water fountain, and toys will come in stages. Donations of any kind are always appreciated!

Well, we are a bird rescue…. Had an emergency request to take in eight pet chickens from up near Spring Branch, Texas. Fortunately, chickens and parrots cohabitate well, especially in large aviaries like ours. The parrots aren’t sure what to make of the new neighbors, but they did enjoy sharing the papayas!

Got called to rescue injured Quakers (aka Monk Parrot) off Hwy. 290 at the 610 Loop. Appears a few managed to trip a power transformer. Deadly for most, but there was one injured survivor. Wings and tail were badly burned, but he'll definitely survive. Had to leave the tail feathers for balance, but trimmed away the badly burned feathers on the wings. It will be a few months before all of his feathers grow back, but going forward he'll live a charmed life with our other Quakers and Conures. Meet "Smokey".
