1. Remember to keep any Halloween treats out of reach of your dog (but of course you can buy Halloween themed dog treats for them!)

2. Dog costumes are getting increasingly popular but many dogs find them uncomfortable. You can always opt for a Halloween bandana or collar instead!

3. Planning to bring the whole family trick or treating? It might be best to leave your dog at home. With the streets extra busy and the people wearing all sorts of strange outfits, even a friendly dog can easily get overwhelmed.

4. Excited to hand out candy? Set up a safe space for your dog and/or set up a baby gate to block off your front entrance. Then you can enjoy the trick or treaters without worrying about Fido getting in the way or sneaking out the door.

5. If your dog struggles with the doorbell and/or strangers, you can set up a treat station outside on your walkway so people don’t come to your door.

Let us know if you have any tips or tricks to keep your dog safe and happy on Halloween!

Dogs and humans have very different walking styles but that’s ok!

We humans tend to walk in a straight line or stick to the path while taking in our surroundings primarily with our eyes and ears. We measure our walks in distance travelled or steps taken.

Dogs don’t naturally move in straight lines and take in their surroundings primarily with their nose and ears. They measure their walks in number of smells and spaces explored.

That means that our dogs will meander, stop at seemingly random spots, and sometimes even backtrack.

Remember that the walk is for your dog so instead of dragging them away from that lamp post, let them enjoy reading all the latest p*e mail. If they catch a smell and want to backtrack to explore it more, why not?

Even if you’re limited by time, you can still let your dog meander, you just may need to turn towards home sooner than usual. Don’t worry if that means you didn’t go as far because that’s not what’s most important to your dog.

We love all dogs, big or small, and believe in treating them all equally with respect.

🚩 Training by withholding basic needs is a huge red flag 🚩

Dogs are sentient beings doing their best in this very human world. They do not need to “earn” their meals or a soft bed. Meet their needs, then we train.

A quick fix you can start doing RIGHT NOW!

The next time your dog is exhibiting a behaviour you find problematic, instead of being annoyed/embarrassed/angry (it’s ok, we’re only human!) try to reframe your mindset and view the behaviour as a *request*

Instead of: “My dog wont stop barking, it’s so annoying!”
Try: “My dog wont stop barking, I wonder what’s bothering them and how I can help.”

Instead of: “My dog is pulling so much on this walk, it’s so frustrating!”
Try: “My dog is pulling a lot, they must have some extra energy to burn off!”

Instead of: “It’s so embarrassing when my dog lunges and barks at other dogs.”
Try: “My dog is unhappy when we get close to other dogs. I’ll try to keep some space so they feel more comfortable.”

Changing the words we use, even in our own heads, can make a world of difference when we’re faced with an uncomfortable situation.

Remember, our dogs are trying their best to navigate a human world that doesn’t always view normal dog things as “acceptable.”
