Normally, during heavy rain and thunderstorms, Winnie has to be in her bed with blankets covering her completely in a confined 2x2 area at the bottom of my back stairs. She shakes and pants the whole time. Her second go-to is under my bed.
.
.
BUT, because of modern science and medicine, I have Trazodone to give her to help her anxiety. This is what that looks like. Sheās ON TOP of my bed, albeit covered in heavy blankets and not able to completely relax. Itās raining very heavily and the thunder is cracking every few minutes. I fully-expected her to get up and look for her other safe spaces, but because of her medication, she is able to cope and even be a bit curious about whatās going on.
.
.
Next time you feel like youāre ādrugging your dogā in a bad way, remember that what youāre actually doing is HELPING THEM COPE WITH ANXIETY. I know a lot of people who feel uncomfortable giving their dogs medications like Prozac and Trazodone, but Winnie is here to remind you that they are tools in a toolbox that HELP our dogs.

Impossible choice, in my mind. Happy Valentineās Day! ā¤ļø
For like, two weeks now, Iāve assumed my back door handle was broken because I would come home and the dogs would just let themselves out. I found out tonight that itās actually just that BIRDIE TAUGHT HERSELF HOW TO OPEN THE BACK DOOR FROM THE INSIDE. Keep your eye on the seam of the door to see the mechanism unlock when she pulls down the handle.
Dalmatians are scary smart.
(Donāt mind the missing handle - havenāt had time to fix it.)
At first glance, this probably looks like a video about a dog who did something wrong. Quite the opposite! I set this up specially FOR the dogs. I realize not everyone is open to this level of mess, but I promise, itās not that bad to clean up, (grab a trash bag and stuff it with the stuffing and maybe a vacuum after that).
.
.
I bought some stuffed animals from Savers for about $20 total and rationed out a few of them for the dogs to shred and have their way with. (Make sure the toys donāt have beads or plastic eyes or glitter, etc.)
.
.
I let them go to town, shredding and throwing and dissecting and playing until theyāre done. Then, I clean up. After an hour tops, I usually have two very mentally and physically exhausted dogs who are ready for a nap. Itās a small price to pay for my dogsā mental health. They have SO much funā¦ and I have so much fun watching them.
.
.
I know this might sound scary to some people, but a gentle reminder that some dog play sounds scary and dangerous to humans, but is usually just normal dog play. Winnie is an extremely vocal player and I know how to interpret their play very well. Note Winnie telling Birdie to back off and Birdie listening VERY well.

Birdie & Jim
Jim gets up to go pee in the middle of the night every night (donāt @ meā¦ itās cool with me. He uses a pee pad.)
Lately, when he jumps back onto the bed, Birdie has begun resource-guarding me pretty hard. You can see her notice him in the video and then turn metal pretty quickly.
Two points here:
1: THIS IS NORMAL. I am not going to punish Birdie for a natural reaction. Punishing her in this situation would likely just make her think, āI was right! There IS something to worry about!ā
2: Whatās the solution? Creating a positive CER or conditioned emotional response. I want to make Birdie LOVE IT when Jim jumps on the bed. I want her to look forward to it.
How will I do this? When I feel Jim jump on the bed, (which I do), Iāll grab a high value treat from my bedside table and offer it to Birdie before she has the chance to react. After several nights of doing this, she will hopefully begin to understand that Jim jumping on the bed = tasty treats.
As for me having the coordination to wake up from a dead sleep, slip a treat into a puppyās mouth, and time it right? Weāll see. Wish me luck!

Got to see Kyra today after a few weeks of her being on vaca (jealous). She looks adorable with her puppy cut. It was so good to see her!
Birdie has been working on a free-shaped retrieve with me for The Academy for Dog Trainers for 4.5 months and we finally passed the other day! A fun byproduct: sheās now randomly presenting me items throughout the day. It is one of the cutest things IN THE WORLD. #trainingshouldbefun
We took a lunchtime walk earlier and Birdie went for her first swim! Not caught on videoā¦ she doggy-paddled out a few feet and actually swam around! š„°
.
.
Pro tip: it is VERY IMPORTANT not to ever force your dog into the water to swim. Youāre guaranteed to create a dog who is very fearful of bodies of water AND you. If your dog doesnāt want to swim - donāt make them! Birdie was clearly very interested and at no point did I force her. She always had the option of getting out and making her own decisions. š«¶š¼
