We hit 300 subscribers!

Back in April I started an email list. My goal was to promote my business but also to serve the community of people who own, love or are interested in learning about Maremma Sheepdogs and dairy goats. I had absolutely no clue what I was doing but I strongly believed that great things could be accomplished through this platform. I have been figuring it out as I go along. And the more I do this the more I love it. It’s a way for me to reach out and serve people all over the world and share what I know about these animals that mean so much to me. I’ve also really enjoyed receiving replies back from many of my subscribers. People ask questions, share their stories and tell me what they would like me to write about. This makes the list dynamic, meaningful and relevant to everyone, and also means that everyone who chooses to participate is helping others, too. Not everyone can own one of my Maremmas or goats, but anyone can sign up to be a part of the community we are building together. Today I hit 300 subscribers! That is so amazing and exciting. I’m going to go for 3000! If you’re not on my list I invite you to join. We are building a community, a family, of people who love, live and work with Maremmas and dairy goats. Won’t you join our family? 🦮💜🐐

It is one of my greatest joys as I breeder to receive photos and updates from my puppy owners. I never tire of hearing how my pups are doing, how they serve their owners as Livestock Guardian Dogs or companions, and how much they are valued and loved. This connection is very special and makes me feel that I still know these dogs, even though I have not seen most of them in person since the day they left my farm.

However, life sometimes goes differently than planned when you own animals. Sometimes as a breeder, we are called to mourn with our clients instead of celebrating. That was the case recently when one of my puppy families lost their dog tragically and unexpectedly to bloat, or Gastric Dilation-Volvulus. Her name was Jess, and she was an incredible Livestock Guardian Dog and much loved member of her family. She was only 4 years old when her life was so cruelly cut short. So in order to honor Jess and raise awareness about bloat in dogs, I wrote this post about her.

If you would like to read about this amazing dog and learn more about how you can prevent your dog from dying of this terrible illness please read on. And please share this story so that other dogs can live long, healthy, happy lives with their families.

How to Make an Inexpensive Dog Training Vest, and What to Put in It

21/01/2023

Look for opportunities to positively reinforce your dog's behaviour today.

Your dog keeps 4 feet on the floor around people, reinforce that with a treat

Your dog comes back when called, play a big game with them

Your dog settles in their bed or mat, give 10 t9 15 seconds of massage around their neck and chest or whatever else they like.

Our dogs do cool, desirable behaviour all the time, and yes, I mean all the time. Train your eye and your ear to notice and reinforce them. If we do that, there won't be room for anything else.

Love and peace.

This is where knowing your stock pays off as a LGD breeder or owner. Dixie was with some juvenile dogs but she is a bit too flighty when the dogs get the zoomies, which sparks their interest in chasing. So I moved her with the 8 week old puppies and she is perfect there. She’s not afraid of the puppies so no flighty behavior, and she is gentle and calm. Not all stock works for all dogs or all ages and stages of development. Know your dogs and your stock and be willing to adjust as needed!

When you are training a puppy (or puppies) the priority should not be the dogs guarding all the stock. It’s the stock training the puppy. You’ll have to take other measures to keep the livestock safe until the pups mature, so you can focus on training the puppy. But if you do this it WILL pay off when your pup is mature.
