This filly suffered an ilial wing fracture during routine exercise in which the tuber coxa was fractured off. Due to the strong pull of the quadriceps muscle, which attaches to the tuber coxa (‘point of the hip’), the tuber coxa displaced down and forwards, leaving a sharp spike of bone below the skin. This bone fragment was at high risk of breaking through the skin and the decision was made to surgically resect the sharp fragment.Surgery was performed under standing sedation and local anaesthetic on the yard. A bone saw was used to resect the end of the fractured bone, leaving a smooth edge. Following this procedure, the filly made an uneventful recovery and following rehabilitation, returned to full exercise.#bakermcveigh #lambourn #veterinary #practice #equinevets #teamwork
Some memories from our previous gelding campaign.. The Baker McVeigh International Mbhongolo fund has made another generous donation to the Coastal Horse Care Unit who along with our Summerveld practice will be reaching out to another small community in Pietermaritzburg this weekend to do a gelding campaign, we are hoping to geld over 40 horses. It will be all hands on deck as we head up to the midlands on Saturday, as all our vets and staff give of their time for this initiative that is close to Dr Andrea Sumaraj's heart. #bakermcveigh #givingback #equinevets Coastal Horse Care Unit Gold Circle
‘An Infected Microchip’
Thousands of microchips are implanted every year without incident. However, there is always a very small chance that, despite strict aseptic protocols, an infection can be introduced at the injection site.
This foal presented with a swelling on the left-hand side of its neck three weeks after being microchipped. Ultrasound of the area revealed a pocket of fluid surrounded by fibrous tissue. Within this pocket, the microchip could be seen as a bright white fleck.
Despite treatment with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, the infection did not resolve, so the decision was made to remove the microchip. This was done under standing sedation via ultrasound guidance on the yard. After removal, the foal made an uneventful recovery, and a replacement microchip was implanted with no complications a few weeks later.

See what our Lambourn team have been getting up to recently…Jack recently completed his 3rd Ironman 70.3 in Weymouth. The terrible conditions meant the seawas too rough for the swim to go ahead which was unfortunate for Jack being such a strongswimmer. He still had a great performance in the bike and run and was pleased to complete his3rd 70.3 since working at Baker McVeigh. Jack has also qualified for the Aqua Bike Age GroupWorld Championships next year in Malaga!Imogene recently ran the Thames Trail Ultra Marathon. This 77 kilometre race started in Oxfordand followed the Thames path all the way to Henley-On-Thames. Despite the torrential rain andknee deep mud, Immy finished in 8 1/2 hours and got 2nd female! Immy has also finished 1st and2nd in 50k Ultras earlier this year!Well done Immy and Jack, the hard work and training has paid off!#weekendwarriors #bakermcveighlambourn #hardworkpaysoff
The Baker McVeigh Johannesburg team were recently seen supporting the riders participating in the 2023 United Aviation Group South African Derby at Kyalami Park.
It is very rewarding to be associated with some of these sport horses, keeping them at the top of their game and maintaining peak performance.
Huge congratulations to all riders but especially Ronnie Healy for the sentimental win on Gillian van Orshof. 🥇 #bakermcveigh #equinevets #kyalamiequestrianpark
CLINICAL CASE BICIPITAL BURSITIS
CLINICAL CASE BICIPITAL BURSITIS
This Arabian mare presented an acute left fore lameness during an endurance event. The mare was referred to our clinic with a 4/5 Grade lameness (video 1). She was very painful on palpation of the shoulder.
The diagnostic work-up included an ultrasound scan of the shoulder (images 2 and 3), where multiple bone fragments of the left humerus were found. This traumatic lesion was accompanied by synovitis of the bicipital bursa.
The chosen treatment was an intraarticular infiltration of the shoulder joint and injection of the inflamed bursa.
At her follow-up visit 1 month later, the mare was trotting sound at our hospital in Johannesburg (video 4).
Despite the poor prognosis, we are very happy with this mare’s clinical improvement.
