This sweet rescue came in to our Summerveld Practice from The Coastal Horse Care Unit, for a large mass of proudflesh to be removed from his knee. ET

Proud flesh is the excess granulation of tissue that is red and cauliflower-like in appearance. Persistent inflammation, along with infection, is a major contributor to proud flesh formation in a wound.

“Dinky Donkey” is feeling much better, after being seen to by Dr Andrea Sumaraj and Dr Matilda Clark.

If you are in a position to donate towards coastalhorsecare Coastal Horse Care Unit please see their page for more information on the work they do.

We welcome Richard Becker to our team of vets in Johannesburg. Richard graduated from the University of Munich in 2022. After graduation he worked for two years at the Swiss Institute of Equine Medicine in Bern, Switzerland.
Richard so enjoyed his time as a student at the Baker McVeigh Summerveld and Cape Town practices in July 2021, that when the call came he promptly packed his bags and slotted right in at our busy clinic in Kyalami.

Saturday 15th June is this years Macmillan Ride of Their Lives race at York Racecourse.
We are proud to be supporting our Yorkshire colleague Antonia Hutchinson aka ‘Toto’, who is one of the twelve amateur jockeys taking part. She has spent the last several months training night and day to be as fit and as ready as possible.
Macmillan Cancer Support provide essential services for people living with cancer at every stage of their life. They’re 98% funded by voluntarily donations, so fundraising is vital to deliver the support they offer.
Macmillan Cancer is especially important to Toto as she lost her father to pancreatic cancer in 2016 and more recently her granny, who was an avid supporter of horse racing. Toto will be racing in honour of her loved ones, and many others who have been affected by this disease.
Wishing her all the best of luck on Saturday and should anyone else want to support her, you can find the link in her bio on Instagram or head to Just Giving and search ‘Antonia-Hutchinson’.
Go Toto!

Sweet Itch - an insect bite hypersensitivity caused by an allergy to the bites of flies/midges 🪰

Clinical symptoms are predominant from Spring to Autumn and tend to get worse in hot humid weather ☀️ As well as at dawn and dusk when midges are active.

Clinical signs are pruritus (persistent itch), horses tend to become irritable, restless and in extreme cases suffer weight loss.
Treatment consists of topical anti-itch shampoo’s 🧴(containing oatmeal, antihistamines, or local anaesthetics), omega 3/6 fatty acids and glucocorticoids (steroids) such as dexamethasone or prednisolone.
Prevention includes stabling around dusk and dawn, using fly hoods & sheets and application of insect repellent.

Maturity tests aim to assess the skeletal maturity of 2YO race horses and the response to training (maturity relative to workload).

Taking X-Rays of the knees allow us to evaluate the growth plate of the distal radius (immediately above the knee) and bone changes of the carpus.
The growth plate of the lower radius is completed and radiological “closure” of the plate happens at 24-30 months of age.

The goal is a preventative approach, to train horses in the best possible timing and to survey for early bone changes that could predict a misadaptation to training that could increase the risk of stress-related injuries.

We use a scoring system that reflects if the growth plate is open or closed, and if there are any radiological changes in the carpal bones.

Every year Baker McVeigh International's Mbhongolo Fund gives back to the community helping charities close to our hearts, Dr Andre Hanekom at our Cape Town practice put forward The Mdzananda Animal Clinic this year, read more about their wonderful work and visit their website
https://www.mdzananda.co.za/ Thank you to Nic Bothma for the excellent images attached.

The Mdzananda Animal Clinic is a veterinary council registered, NPO animal clinic and shelter based in the heart of Khayelitsha township just outside Cape Town, South Africa. The impoverished township is home to an estimate of 1 million people and 300 000 companion animals.
Highly respected and supported by the people they serve, Mdzananda was founded in 1996 in response to the need to provide veterinary care to a fast growing community that had no access to help for their animals.
Apart from veterinary services Mdzananda provides shelter to abandoned or homeless pets, assists with abuse and neglect interventions and performs humane education outreach programmes.
Mdzananda is the only animal welfare service in Khayelitsha. Without our help most animals will not have access to medical and welfare support as private care is too expensive. Animals would live lives of pain and even die.
It is often of the opinion that people in townships should not own pets. We have a different opinion. Anyone who visits Mdzananda has the pleasure of meeting owners who adore their animals.
❤️A community that loves animals is a healthy community. By looking after an animal people learn responsibility, respect for life, compassion and non-violence. These are valuable attributes which flow over into everyday life. Mdzananda Animal Clinic

Street nail

“Street nail” refers to puncture wounds on the solar surface of the hoof by sharp objects such as nails or screws, and they should be treated as an emergency.

The owner should leave the object in the foot and get the vet called in as soon as possible to take radiographs of the foot (if possible hold leg up whilst waiting for the vet). Radiography of two perpendicular views allows to estimate depth of pe*******on and orientation before extracting the foreign object.

Puncture wounds could potentially involve the navicular bone bursa, digital flexor tendon sheath (DFTS), deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT), distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint or distal phalanx. If the puncturing foreign object has affected any of these structures, there is risk for infection.

In this clinical case, thanks to quick communication between the owner and the farrier, we managed to assess this puncturing screw. There is no concern for implication of deeper structures, giving this case a happy ending.

Thousands of microchips are implanted every year without incident. However, there is always a very small chance that, despite strict aseptic protocols, an infection can be introduced at the injection site.

This foal presented with a swelling on the left-hand side of its neck three weeks after being microchipped. Ultrasound of the area revealed a pocket of fluid surrounded by fibrous tissue. Within this pocket, the microchip could be seen as a bright white fleck.

Despite treatment with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, the infection did not resolve, so the decision was made to remove the microchip. This was done under standing sedation via ultrasound guidance on the yard. After removal, the foal made an uneventful recovery, and a replacement microchip was implanted with no complications a few weeks later.

Have you ever heard of sesamoiditis❓

Sesamoiditis is a pathology characterised by an inflammation of the proximal sesamoid bone and attachment of the suspensory branches.

It's a common finding in thoroughbred yearlings and racehorses but it can affect all types of horses at all ages. 🐎

Pain and heat at the level of the insertion of the branches of the suspensory ligament are common clinical signs 💢 The degree of lameness is variable with some horses initially remaining sound despite the clinical changes.

Diagnosis is initially achieved through radiography 🩻 but an ultrasound examination of the suspensory branches is essential to complete the diagnosis.

It is important to make a correct and complete diagnosis at an early stage to establish the best treatment option and rehabilitation program for each case. ✅💉

“Designer Vaginas”

Caslicks in racehorses 🐎

Did you know the incidence of poor perineal conformation is higher in young racehorses?

This is primarily due to the little amount of intrapelvic fat and the acquired shortening and angulation of the v***a. This angulation results in improper sealing of the v***a lips during exercise, causing young fillies to aspirate air into the va**na. This phenomenon is referred to as ‘’wind-sucking’’, leading to the development of pneumova**na in horses.💨
It has the potential to have an impact on the mare’s performance and may contribute to infertility and the inability to carry a pregnancy to term.

A caslick surgery, also called a vulvoplasty, is a veterinary procedure which helps to restore the normal anatomy of the mare. This surgical procedure involves closing the upper part of the v***a to prevent contamination of the va**na and assists in the prevention of vaginitis, endometritis (and placentitis in pregnant horses).

It’s a tailored solution for high-performance horses, ensuring their comfort and peak performance on the track 💥

❗Removal of the caslick is advised prior to stallion service and birth labor to avoid laceration of the surround tissues❗
