Moments like these make us proud to be balanced trainers and have the tools to help dogs open up! Tucker has completely transformed and opened up with us all with the help of the e-collar. The first time we used it, it resulted in him taking treats from us for the first time. Tonight, we visited a field that used to make him incredibly flighty and disengaged from us. Now, he frolics back to us for treats and cuddles!

We all look at Ivy like Winston does!🥰

This was a full circle moment for Winston and his owners! When he first came to us, he was explosive when he saw another dog and our Group Training class was actually how we first met them! We walked passed with our Group Trainers at the Eastern Prom and Winston was loudly declaring how badly he wanted to join us. His owners jokingly asked how they could get him to be as well behaved as our Groups Trainers…. Well, here we are! This was Winston’s first Group Training session and he handled being around a wide variety of dogs both in and out of our class like a CHAMP! His owners put in the work during their 1:1 program to get here and we couldn’t be more proud! You go, Winston!!

We caught ourselves a real good Fish! (Get it?! Because his name’s Fish!)

All jokes aside, this handsome Bloodhound has been so fun to work with! We love exploring his motivations and intentions to help neutralize his reactivity. He has shown so much progress in just a couple sessions and we can’t wait to see what he’ll accomplish next!

Big shoutout to owners, Max & Greg, who are so dedicated to his success!

Kona says, if you can’t beat the box, become the box 📦

All jokes aside - getting your dog to investigate, and move around on novel surfaces or objects is one of many great ways to build confidence (and just have fun)! That could be a box, or random objects in the environment! (Snow banks, tree stumps, picnic tables, objects in the wood section at Lowes, park benches, the top of a bucket.. etc.)

Kona and her owner, Lisa, do agility together so Kona is very environmentally confident and is used to interacting with all sorts of different objects. Getting completely inside the box wasn’t the goal of this activity… but Kona decided it was her goal! It was super cool to see her troubleshoot, try again, and eventually get all four legs in without much human interaction or prompting 👏🏼🧠 she was really thinking outside the box 😉

What random items/surfaces have you asked your dog to jump on, or in? Were they successful? Were they willing to try again if they didn’t succeed? Let us know in the comments!

This mystery respiratory disease has the entire dog community feeling uneasy. As professionals in this industry, our priority is to keep dogs safe and that means taking extra precautions and being extrememly intentional with how we’re managing and handling the dogs in our care. Until more details on how this illness is transmitted become available, we recommend being as careful as possible and following your local guidelines closely.

Check out IA’s tips above for staying safe from illness this holiday season. If you have any further questions about your dog’s risk level and further precautions to take, we recommend contacting your dog’s regular veterinarian. We hope you all have an illness-free holiday season, for both dogs and humans!

Dogs deserve feedback.

In training, the greatest gift you can give your dog is appropriate feedback. Here at IA, we always start by teaching the behaviors that we want because we want to pave the road for success. This often means replacing “problem” behaviors with something productive. Constructive feedback helps shape our expectations and effectively communicate them to our dog, which is often done through corrections.

We are balanced trainers because dogs not only learn through rewards but also through different forms of “controlled pressure”, or corrections. We once heard another trainer say, “when did humans get to decide how dogs communicate?”, and we couldn’t agree more. Tactile communication instinctively makes sense to dogs and our corrections are meant to mimic dogs’ inherent communications with each other. Consistent, timely, and fair feedback is crucial for effective dog training and allows handlers to create ample opportunity for growth, while also keeping our human emotions separate from our communications with our dog.

Provide your dog the tools to be successful, give your dog the feedback it deserves.
