Does your dog have separation anxiety? Most dogs do, to some extent. On the one hand, it means that they feel safe with you and depend on your presence and/or attention for security; on the other hand, it can cause a lot of problems for you (cleaning up big messes and replacing destroyed furniture), your neighbors (enduring endless barking), and your dog (prolonged stress, self-injurious behavior). A proper seperation anxiety training plan has MANY components-- one of them is to help your dog feel comfortable when they're alone. Here's one exercise to help your velcro dog detach from you a little bit:
Teach them a down/stay cue, methodically adding distance and duration. Pick a settle spot in each room your dog has access to (bonus points if you can make it cozy with a bed, mat, or rug). Practice directing them to that settle spot, rewarding them for laying down there, and have them stay while you leave the room. Gradually increase the amount of time you spend out of sight. Your dog will 1. learn that when you leave, you always come back, and 2. there's an alternative to following you around your house, and it pays better to settle than being underfoot (or glued to my ankles, like Astro ⬇).
