So many dogs (and birds, and people...) are suffering in this year’s terrible spike in fireworks. Besides these three simple tips to help dogs, I have a fourth one: CALL THE POLUCE (911) anytime you can identify where the fireworks are. Stopping any illegal activity requires citizens to get involved and speak up. Thank you!

Trying up your dog or going to your medicine cabinet for a durg to help your terrified pet around July Fourth are not good ideas. Never do these things.

It's one thing to adopt a dog in need of a forever home. It's quite another to import sick animals (or animals not known to be healthy) and endanger the health of the animals who already live here. I hope the AVMA is successful in getting stricter controls and more robust monitoring to ensure the health of all imported dogs.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) today announced its strong support of the Healthy Dog Importation Act, aimed at ensuring that dogs entering the United States do not pose a health risk to humans or animals.

Patricia McConnell (PhD, Animal Behaviorist, Wisconsinite) is, hands down, one of the smartest “dog people” out there. If you’re looking for great training ideas and advice online, I urge you to check out her blog, The Other End of the Leash. Her books are wonderful, too—from training guides for a variety of situations and challenges to more memoir-type books that have a touch of James Herriot to them.

Learning online has become more important than ever, and that's why I am happy that the Learning Center on my website is chock full of information about a vast range of topics, from training a puppy to heel to preventing separation anxiety. Check out the articles and videos on it, including one near and dear to my heart, with me, Willie, and Tootsie.

We should, of course, ALWAYS have an emergency plan that includes caring for our pets... but—bows a great time to make a plan or refresh the plans you’ve already made.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says there is no evidence that dogs and cats can spread the virus that causes COVID-19. But the CDC does recommend that people with symptoms restrict contact with their pets just like they do with people. Specific guidance for infected indivi...
