Poor Guinness was attacked by a loose dog when we were out running. He was bitten multiple times on the leg. It was a scary thing to experience.
Anybody else encountered a grumpy loose dog on their runs? How did you handle it?

Impressive to think that a dog can be trained to run the Iditarod (1200 miles pulling a sled in Alaska) by the time they are 2 years old!!

"Dogs can run in the race as soon as they are trained to do so, which means that there are young dogs on the trail. Dogs keep running in a musher’s team as long as they are healthy and as long as they still love to race. That means there are ‘old’ experienced dogs on the trail. It also means that mushers can have a mixture of young dogs (2 or 3 years old) and older dogs (about age 4 -8) on the team."

What is the average age of the dogs? Are they retired after a certain age? These are questions that a lot of you have asked.

6 year old running a 2.06 half marathon - guaranteed there are no closed growth plates there. So why the recommendation to delay running with a dog until 12 months? Is it because we've bred dogs with conformational issues that predispose to orthopaedic issues? Could a "sound" dog safely start running earlier? How do you define "sound"? Are we too conservative?

What are your thoughts?

Long distances aren’t a problem for these preteens.
