Hummingbird takes a quick shower
I'm used to having tons of hummingbirds around but this was a first for me! The little one came to sample the gooseneck loosestrife and just couldn't resist diving into the hose spray for a bath! They made three little trips under the water stream, stopping to rest and preen in a honeysuckle bush in between each one, then took off in a bee line for the meadow.

I’m always so grateful for the thoughtful planning that went into the gardens before we got here. We are truly spoiled with such an abundance of pollinator magnets, and wildlife food and habitat and several different micro ecosystems - all packed into less than 2 acres.
This purple crab apple creates a beautiful microclimate that keep our front yard cool. It’s covered with pollinators and beneficial insects until the blossoms fall. Then small apples that are just perfect for cider or pies. And it holds those apples right through winter, drawing huge flocks of cedar waxwings and other birds too as a reliable food source.

The new farm hand is turning out to be quite enthusiastic, even if she does still sleep on the job a lot of the time! I’ve never heard of literally kicking the weeds out of the garden before but she seems to be quite certain that it’s the way to go. 🤷♀️ 😂
Time is flying here and it’s hard to believe it’s time to get the snapdragon babies out already (I’m even a bit behind!)
It’s going to be an interesting season this year and it is sometimes *very* hard to accept that I just might not be able to grow or manage as much as I usually do this year, with this little pumpkin in tow.
I have kept my commitments very low in anticipation, and am not offering CSA bouquet subscriptions this year but I do still hope to have fresh bouquets on the road stand.
In any case the most exciting thing I’m growing is hopefully a person with lifelong love for all things soil and sun and rain and green and living, and you know, this beautiful little moment from today makes me think that all of that will somehow go just absolutely fine.
Happy belated earth day, everyone!
May we grow kind and wise together.
