🐸 Look up in the sky tonight as we all watch the same full moon rise around the globe (and across the ages and species) 🌚♾🍄

The Full Moon by any other name... Corn Moon (Algonquin, Ojibwe), Harvest Moon (Dakota), and Ricing Moon (Anishinaabe) signify that this is the time to gather maturing crops. Along the same vein, the Assiniboine people named this period Black Cherries Moon, referring to when chokecherries become ripe. Sturgeon Moon referred to the time when sturgeon were most easily caught.

Historically, in cultures all around the world, our ancestors would use the draw and pull of the moon (which cause tides, sap, essential oils and overall strength of plants to be on the rise) to harvest and preserve the best plants possible to preserve for teas, tinctures, salves, ointments, essential oils, balms etc.

Leave time for steppin' out to enjoy a night of full moon revelry tonight friends...and don't forget to watch for the Perseid meteor showers too! The Heirloom Gardener - John Forti

I'm used to having tons of hummingbirds around but this was a first for me! The little one came to sample the gooseneck loosestrife and just couldn't resist diving into the hose spray for a bath! They made three little trips under the water stream, stopping to rest and preen in a honeysuckle bush in between each one, then took off in a bee line for the meadow.

I don't usually arrange my harvest buckets but this was so fun to work at this scale! Every side is different and there isn't an angle I could find that I don't like.

Bless this mess.
💕

It's hard to not be selling bouquets, and connecting and sharing with new customers, and growing in fun and flashy ways.

But it is also good to rest.

There is peace here. There is reward also in building the soil, and getting new beds and pathways dug, and saving more blooms for seed storage, and more blooms next year.

So if you needed permission to rest, for a little or a long while....
If rest was not your plan right now...
This is your sign.

It is ok to rest.

A fallow season is not wasted.

Gosh I will never get tired of the beautiful bold contrast of purple larkspur next to bright orange calendula! Both of them are entirely self seeded this year with a surprised appearance of "earl grey" larkspur, which never showed up for me at all last year when I planted it! 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️😂

Plus a few other pretties because, well obviously. 😘

Happy summer, loves.

"Forsythia" from my new poetry collection Love Notes from the Hollow Tree by Jarod K. Anderson.

*****

Forsythia

As forsythia grows tall,
its branches bend beneath their own weight,
bowing to the ground in arches of yellow flowers.

Wherever they touch the earth,
the branches root again and send up new shoots,
stitching gold across the landscape.

Some new kinds of knowledge shift our center of gravity,
staggering us,
bending us low beneath the burden.

If you think of your worldview as a stone tower,
this shift is a cataclysm of splintered rock.

If your worldview is forsythia,
then every startling truth that bends you low becomes a new connection to the earth,
a new way to stand,
an invitation to grow.

We live in a time of strong wind and sudden pressure.
It is not an age for towers.

It’s an age for stubborn flowers.

My little camping bouquet held up well over Night. I love these colours! Colorado yarrow, husker red penstemon and alpha calendula. 👌

Also: it has been such a hard realization that flower farming is not really happening this year (😭💔😭) with my severe brain fog and executive dysfunction and medications not working, but it is still so wonderful to just always have flowers for me, for our friends, just because. If you have room for a little patch of cutting flowers or have been wondering if you should start snipping from your prized perennials - DO IT. Flowers in the home are magic.

Rainy day blues.
Hot coffee, a smokey fire to keep the mosquitoes away, cool weather just perfect for working outside(not to mention baby wearing!), a deep drink for the plants and seedlings, and beautiful bunches of meadow sage ready to bring inside for drying.

A very good day.

Southern charm Verbascum.
I had a crush on this plant for YEARS before I was able to find seed and start my own, so it’s so satisfying to me to see them establishing SO well now in their third year. like lupins, I want them EVERYWHERE!

They’re just so stunning a photo doesn’t even do them justice- but sadly as a cut flower they tend to shatter and drop petals which some folks find messy and are not a fan of (although personally I still love them no matter what, and adore bringing them into my home)

😍😍😍😍

What do YOU think?? Worth it, or nah??

I’m always so grateful for the thoughtful planning that went into the gardens before we got here. We are truly spoiled with such an abundance of pollinator magnets, and wildlife food and habitat and several different micro ecosystems - all packed into less than 2 acres.

This purple crab apple creates a beautiful microclimate that keep our front yard cool. It’s covered with pollinators and beneficial insects until the blossoms fall. Then small apples that are just perfect for cider or pies. And it holds those apples right through winter, drawing huge flocks of cedar waxwings and other birds too as a reliable food source.
