Its Barn Cat Season!!
I’m so proud and grateful to announce that Arizona Barn Cats (ABC) is kicking off our 6th season of Barn Cats!
THANK YOU for your interest in the Barn Cat Program.
With every drop off, ABC is constantly evaluating/re evaluating ‘how can we make this better for the cats?’ ‘How can we make this safer for the cats’ ‘what else can we do to give them the best opportunity to thrive in their new environment?’
Most importantly, please take into consideration the safety of your potential barn cats. Do you frequently see coyotes/owls/hawks on your property? Do you have large hunter breed dogs that roam freely, that could potentially attack and kill the cats? If so, then a barn cat on your property would not be the best idea.
Here are answers to some FAQ…
The Cats
These are feral cats. Born outside, with little to no human contact. They are not friendly; they are not lap cats. All the cats are spay/neutered, and ear tipped. (They are also checked/treated for ear mites and fleas at time of surgery) I like to place minimum of 3, all from the same feral colony. They are more likely to get along, and less likely to wander off. I only take cats whose lives are in imminent danger. I ensure they are healthy appearing cats, no open wounds, goopy eyes etc. I don’t place senior cats; I don’t place kittens. I don’t accept cats from hoarder houses, I don’t accept cats from extra-large colonies, I don’t accept cats where one or more of the other cats in the colony appears sick.
Acclimation
Your cats will need to stay confined on your property for 3 weeks so they can adapt to the sights, sounds, smells of the property. ABC will provide an enclosure 6’ x 3’ x 4’. This is your cat’s new home. Within the enclosure will include food, water, a litter box and a shelter tote.
Bonding
You will be using wet food to bond and build trust with your mousers while they are confined. This will lead to successful results once your cats are given free roam of your property. Ideally, your mousers ‘working hours’ will be 7 am to 7 pm. ABC will teach you how to bring your cats back into the enclosure in the evening – and locked up til morning. They will be much safer, and you will have them much longer if they are not roaming the property throughout the night.
Your responsibility
You will be responsible for providing food, water, and veterinary care to prevent suffering. Cats cannot survive on rodents alone. (Shelter will be provided by ABC.)
Fees
There are no fees for the cats. (ABC will do their best to give you all of the tips/tricks we know, but we cannot guarantee that they will stay on your property) However, there is a small delivery fee, $100. Which includes the enclosure, set up, and all start up supplies necessary for acclimation. (food/water bowl, litter box, litter and 18-gallon tote) We will also provide a bag of food that your cats are currently being fed. You can use this to gradually introduce what you intend on feeding them. Drop offs are scheduled Saturday and Sunday, early morning.
