โญ๏ธPosture? Conformation? Hoof Balance? โญ๏ธ
Here's a new client that I've met for the first time this week. As always, I start with a static assessment of the Horse in front of me. It can be seen from the first photo that the Horse was reluctant to stand straight/ square and with balanced posture. Then, looking at the conformation of the forelimb, you can see the lack of Symmetry through the limb, affecting the weight bearing/ loading of the Hoof.
The crack close to the coronet band is due to the heel being over loaded. In an effort to relieve the loading in this area, I took the heels as far far back as possible to release the load.
The red line shows the difference in straightness from the knee down to the centre of the foot. After the trim, the Symmetry of the limb has improved and the horses posture appears to be more balanced, with him being more willing to stand straight through the body. So, maybe when we think something is a conformation fault, we should also consider that the trim and shoeing package can have a huge impact. The owner has reported back that he is moving a lot straighter on hard and soft ground. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

โญ๏ธ Here at A Sound Stride we're always happy to help educate those that want to learn. Farriery has changed since its inception and we're keen to stay at the top of our game by using the latest technology to help the Horses in our care. It's important that we explain the the importance of this technology to those that are training/ working in the industry, it's all for the good of the Horse. Thank you to Hopwood Hall College for asking us to present to your students today! โญ๏ธ

๐ŸŒŸMulti Team Approach๐ŸŒŸ
Today Duke was seen by Equine Osteopath Bruce Hewett. Along with discussing the findings of the Hoofbeat anslysis, Bruce carried out his own range of assessments. Duke had his lumbar vertebrae and sacroiliac joint manipulated. This should help him to feel and move straighter now he's got used to the alterations made to his feet.
Great to see another Equine Professional working as part of the care package, with the Horse at the centre of everyone's focus!

LETS TALK ABOUT SHOES ๐Ÿ˜
๐ŸŒŸWhen we first assessed Duke he was shod in front and unshod behind. The decision was made to shoe behind with the rationale that; the lateral extension will help to encourage straightness whilst at stance and the rolled toe to the medial aspect helps to focus the break over to the inside. As we progress through his plan, we will continue to monitor his data, communicating with his Farrier and make adjustments as needed. With a longer term possibility of returning to barefoot. ๐ŸŒŸ Lisa Sharp Lisa Sharp Sports Massage Therapist - Balancing Horse & Rider

08/10/2023

๐ŸŒŸAs promised we are going to share the data from Duke's re assessment. Starting with the data that helps to compare evenness of stride, by measuring the period of time that the hoof is on the ground (mid stance phase)

We have collated the information and you can see from the figures shown in the table below, how much more even Duke's strides are on the 2nd date (07.10.23) compared to the 1st (16.09.23).

The biggest change seen is the difference between the left and right hind was 5.9% when first measured compared to a difference of only 0.5% on the second date.

Tomorrow we will explain the change in shoeing package that had helped to bring his stance times closer to matching.๐ŸŒŸLisa Sharp Sports Massage Therapist - Balancing Horse & Rider

07/10/2023

๐ŸŒŸGreat to meet up with Duke again this afternoon. Phase 1 of his plan has now been completed, and it was time to re assess his stride pattern.
As Duke was due to be Shod this week, we gave Duke's normal farrier access to the full report. We then discussed with him how best to make changes to the Shoeing Package, this included Duke being shod behind for the first time! We agreed with Dukes farrier that a wide webbed shoe with lateral support and a slight rolled toe behind would improve landing, increase Breakover and hopefully encourage less swing.

Lisa, who is his owner/ rider and therapist, reported back saying he was feeling much better, that's only opinion and not objective! So we were understandably slightly nervous, but we didn't need to be. The results are clear. There are some big improvements identified by the data! We're going to go through each marker again over the next few days and explain in more detail. But here's a little video of Duke enjoying his work this week! ๐Ÿ˜ Lisa Sharp Sports Massage Therapist - Balancing Horse & Rider

Motion map
The Motion map is an animated representation of the entire stance phase: The moment of contact between the hoof and the ground. The initial ground contact, the movement during the stance phase and the break-over point during break-over. The Motion map shows all angles at which this occurs, for both walking and trotting, on both hard and soft surfaces.

This video explains what we can see from the motion map. There are obvious differences between the two feet which will be explained in future posts ๐Ÿ‘ Lisa Sharp Sports Massage Therapist - Balancing Horse & Rider Josh Manning Dipwcf

We now know that Dukes Left hip flexors and lumbar are tight, Right hips dropped.
Left hindleg being pulled forward and away from the body in attempt to avoid flexing the hip.
Osteopath has been booked and this report shared with Lisaโ€™s Coach Debbie Sykes who has worked with Lisa this week to help straighten Duke and engage his left hind leg.
From a farriers perspective - at the moment Duke is barefoot behind. We could possibly look at putting shoes on with a wider webbed shoe on the outside with a rolled toe towards the inside, with plenty of support over the heels to encourage the foot flight straighter to allow Lisa to build muscle in the correct areas. IMAGE E & F
Dukes front feet (image F) are pretty uniform in terms of length, height and sidewards movement, however the data reveals some interesting points with the hind feet...

Hind feet (image E) - Stride length is even in both Walk and Trot.
But
The strides taken aren't uniform in the amount of sidewards movement in both the walk and Trot.
The coloured lines show the deviation from a straight plane. In particular the left hind in Trot showing abduction away from the body before swinging into adduction. Compared to the Right hind that moves steadily in an adduction movement throughout the whole of the stride. Image B C D - The breakover point (shown on the image as a red area) is the point at which the horses toe, pivots and pushes as the heels are lifted and leave the ground. Ideally the breakover point would be the toe, directly in front of the point of frog . We can see here that Duke's breakover is standard. ๐Ÿ‘

From the data we've shown you tonight, things are looking relatively normal for Duke. However, tomorrow data will show some interesting results! ๐Ÿ‘€ Along with suggested possible causes and how we would look to be working together as a team with other Professionals to improve his way of going. Over the next few nights we will be posting bite sized chunks of Dukes report and explaing the data received in more detail. ๐Ÿ‘

Image A - shows Duke's Hoof Angle for near and off foreleg. By comparing the two measurements The Farrier can work towards developing equality. This information is also useful to the Therapist as it could indicate that Duke is loading one forefoot more than the other.
It also shows the data recorded for: Number of strides taken in Walk and Trot, the time spent in each pace and the speed of each stride. This data can be used to assess evenness and regularity of Duke's stride. This can be useful when planning training sessions, to help develop straightness in his work.

Motion sensors can be used to provide precise data on the angle at which a horseโ€™s hooves are striking the ground. This information can inform trimming and shoeing decisions.

Cool, right? ๐Ÿ˜›

Welcome to A SOUND STRIDE

A farriery consultation using the latest 3d technology-Hoof Beat. Using sensors on all 4 feet to help us SEE THE UNSEEN!

Hoof Beat is a gait mapping system that can distinguish landing, stance and break-over in time and movement. Hoof Beat measures all 4 legs and shows us what the eye cannot. We use high precision sensors which we then convert into objectively interpretable data, in the form of 3D animation.

This enables the following
๐ŸŽ Mapping the gate
๐ŸŽQuantify and compare
๐ŸŽShare reports

As a farrier this will help determine shoe type, trims and/or remedial work,
enabling A SOUND STRIDE.
