✨Squamous ulcers (non glandular) vs glandular ulcers✨
It’s good to know the differences between these two regions in the horses stomach because it can help you identify, prevent, and manage gastric ulcers in your horse!
🔹The upper part of the stomach is the squamous region. This area is less protected as to why It is more susceptible to ulcers. Gastric acid can splash into this region and form ulcers even more so when the stomach is empty and when exercising.
🔸The glandular region is the bottom 2/3 of the stomach. This region is where acid secretion takes place.
There are some changes you can make in your horse’s feeding and management program to PREVENT gastric ulcers.
🔺If your horse already has ulcers the only FDA approved drug for ulcers is omeprazole.
Some other drugs that your vet may recommend depending on what region your horse is affected would be Sucralfate, Ranitidine/Cimetidine, & Misoprostol. Always contact your vet if you suspect your horse may have gastric ulcers so they can diagnose (scope) and come up with a treatment plan.🔺
There are MANY supplement fads on the market that the ingredients have little to NO research to help prevent or cure gastric ulcers😡
I just got one of my barrel horses scoped ulcer free a couple weeks ago because of a strict regimen. Thankfully this horse in particular hasn’t ever had to feel what ulcers must feel like..
🥳Prevention is KEY!!🥳
