I thought Race was special. He has a sister in Utah that's doing great things, and he has a sister that's pointing birds for a goshawk in California, and he's got five other sisters that are just hunting dogs and great family members.

My wife was sorting through some things today and I asked her if she found any dog pictures. She said yes, and I asked if she found any of Jesse. She said yes, but she said she didn't want to show it to me cuz it would make me sad. As soon as I saw that it was the little pocket watch, she was right, I started crying like I am right now. 30 years ago I had maybe my best dog, she was awful good. She had a hell of a nose and she was solid as a rock. I'm not a horse person, but my young daughter had a paint Mare and Jesse was standing over in the corner of the horse lot and just didn't move. I finally figured out that I said whoa to the mare and to Jesse, whoa was was whoa, no matter who you were talking to. My buddy bill always said "everybody loves Jess". Well, there was about 20 acres of wheat stubble north of my house and I went to a meeting at Galesburg that day and Jesse got out of the pen which was not totally uncommon. I called home around 11:00 p.m. and I could tell there was something wrong with my wife but I didn't know exactly what it was. When I got home I got the bad news. Our tenant was mowing the wheat stubble and Jesse was running in the field where he was working. Apparently Jesse went on point on a butterfly or something, and once she was on point she was Rock Solid, to the point of getting run over by an 18 ft batwing mower. My wife went back and the only thing she could identify was a spot on her ear. My tenant cried, My Wife and Kids cried, it was a terrible day, but it was after midnight when I got home and when she told me I was too tired to cry so I just went to bed. That year Christmas, another buddy of mine gave me that pocket watch, so at Christmas time, I cried.

Somehow, one of my pups wound up in California pointing quail for a falcon hunter. She sent me a really nice letter with this picture of a Cooper's Hawk plucking the tail feathers from a little bird. She said, "thank you for breeding such a nice bird dog! She is settled into our home and pack amazingly fast and is already pointing every Robin on a fence or dove nesting in the trees. I can't wait to get her out into the field this fall." Since I can't hunt or train, it always makes me feel good to see others having great success.

I'm about to get the oops! litter under control. For Mother's Day, my wife and my son finally got the DNA test taken so that we can find out who's the real daddy, whether it's race or Dodge. We should know in about 2 weeks.

Okay, I need some help ladies. Which do you prefer? The Wild and wooly Grizzly Adams type, or the neat sleek James Bond type? Bucket list race can be whoever you want him to be.

Just a little update on bucket list pups. We're still alive and, well, not well. Just got home from the hospital. Five trips to the emergency room and 7 Days of inpatient. Lung cancer doesn't do good with long covid, but they think they can get me back to where I was before the long covid. My wife's been taking up a lot of slack with the two little boys and the oops litter. We got the DNA test package so hopefully in the next two weeks will know who the daddies are to each one of the pups so we can register them. I'm not sure which daddy would be better but I know they'll both be good. I'll try to keep you updated on the status of what's going on at bucket list pups

Well, it looks like bucket list pups is just about to run a full cycle. 4 years ago the doctor told me I was going to die because my pain was too intense, but after an extra surgery I decided I might live A little bit longer. I told my wife that I wanted to have one last litter of pups And that's where the bucket list pups came from. But actually I've had five litters and I have pups strung all across America. I have met so many wonderful setter people in just four short years. I just wish I had met some of you 50 years ago. I need to do something with my oops litter, so I think I'll try to get the paternity test and be done with that crap. They are just way too nice pups to not do anything with. I also have a litter of pups due in about 6 weeks. It's a repeat mating the last litter was awfully good. They are wild Atlantic way / Shadow Oak bo. The English Setter Facebook sites have enriched my life greatly. Thank you all so much.

BUCKET LIST PUPS. I got back into the dog business in 2019. Three years prior to that I put down my last dog, Pearl. She was the end of the line of about 35 years of raising English setters. My wife stayed in the car with Pearl when the vet came out, and I stood like a statue looking across the road with my back to the car and tears pouring down my face. I knew that was the end of my bird dogs and the end of my hunting career forever. In 2013, I was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer and it took me for a loop, and that was followed up by stage 4 lung cancer in 2019. That resulted in 12 surgeries, about 2 months in the hospital, 26 trips to the emergency room, 80 radiation treatments and about 30 chemotherapy treatments and I was pretty well beat down. Actually, 4 years ago my cancer doctor told me I was going to die, so I asked him how I would die. With lung cancer I thought I might not be able to breathe but he said no that I was in so much pain that my heart would give out. Well I had one additional surgery and decided maybe I was going to live. So I told my wife I'd like to have one last bucket list litter of pups. It's a lot more fun to think about raising pups than it is to think about dying. So I got two really nice females and was lucky enough to breed to a couple of really great stud dogs, got 15 great pups out of the two litters, and I was in business. I still can't walk much and I can't train very much, but I'm very good at raising pups and I love to see the people's faces when they buy the pups and I love to hear the stories of what happens with them. So I guess that's how we came up with the name BUCKET LIST PUPS. Contact David Kerr 309-333-3587.

I'm not getting along very fast on setting up my page. I can see what I want in my head, but it's a real handicap not being tech savvy. I did realize something today though. I was so blessed with the great breedings that I've had over the last couple months that now I'm worried that my pups aren't perfect. I shouldn't feel that way but I like for everybody to be happy with the dogs they get from me. I guess partly it's because it's cold outside and the puppies look a little hu**ed up from the cold weather, but I think all the new owners are real happy with the pups they've gotten so far. So worrying is just borrowing trouble from tomorrow that will probably never come. Easy to say but harder to do.

PHILOSOPHY AT BUCKET LIST PUPS.
I pretty much know what I like when I see it. There are so many traits to consider, but when you have a dog around the house 365 days a year for 10 or 15 years , I want a beautiful animal. So I guess my number one consideration is if a dog is pretty, or maybe I should say stunning. I was an ag major in college and I took a class in advanced graduate genetics when I was a sophomore and I was undergraduate assistant to the professor, who had a substantial grant to carry out a genetics research project. Of course that's been many years ago, but I still kinda remember about dominant and recessive genes, incomplete dominance, lethal genes, additive gene action, and a bunch of the technical stuff, but I also learned some other things while I was there. I also learned that Archie Manning was pre-potent in siring quarterbacks, and Muhammad Ali had a daughter that I wouldn't wanna fight, and Barry Bonds Jr followed in his dad's footsteps, and that Cal Ripken Jr didn't fall far from the tree either, so obviously it's a wise move to start with excellent bloodlines and excellent animals. But I also learned through my experiences that …... well, sometimes matings just aren't perfect no matter how well you plan. I had a great example of two beautiful famous people that had kind of a dud of a child, but my wife would not allow me to use it as an example here. So I think that breeding dogs is like a lot of other things, more of an art than a science, and if you make a bad choice one time, don't do it again. I was very fortunate when I started Bucket List Pups that I could buy my genetics and I took advantage of many of the great dogs in America, and I had a lot of good luck to go along with it. Also, I think I'm good at raising pups, I've done it for many years and I've been blessed with some dandies. One of the best parts of raising pups is seeing the looks on the faces of the new owners as they pick up their babies. I try to price my pups so anyone can afford one, and also, all of my pups are available, I don't hold any back. I have kept the last one after everybody else picked their choice, and you should see the two dogs I've got now. I'll probably keep three breeding females as long as I can keep going.

WHAT THE NEW PUPPY OWNERS TELL US.

Every setter pup is a special gift. Here is what some Bucket List Pups owners have to say.

The owner of Dash, short for dashing, texted me this. “He's really great. He's gotten a lot of style too. Very handsome points. And a TON of bird drive.”

I'm so glad I got her. She's a phenomenal little dog.

You guys do a great job bringing them to be top notch. We ended up getting her fixed because we aren't going to be breeding and I can't deal with all of that clean up, but it felt like a shame to do because she's so beautiful.

When I texted another young man who got one of my little females indirectly from another bird dog hunter, he texted me this. “You must be the man who put all the pieces together to make this beautiful dog? I love her.”

FULL DISCLOSURE. I have had one litter that was very disappointing. We had great bloodlines but it just wasn't a cross that was meant to be, and we never tried it again. Also I bought 3 pups from a litter a pups that came from Purine Research Farm. The first male, they shot over 500 quail the first year over him, and the other male, his owner told me was better than that. The third pup was a female and she was bird shy. Whenever she smelled a bird she came and stood behind me. Obviously that didn't go anywhere. Otherwise I've had great luck with my dogs.

SOCIALIZING THE PUPS.
A lot of my socialization for the puppies comes from our two foster boys. They are a couple of dandies. Sometimes it looks like they're pretty rough on the pups, but when the pups grow up they usually get their revenge. Sometimes the pups can become overwhelming even for me. When you get 10 or 15 of them together, all of them jumping for attention.

HISTORY. I got my first English setter when I was 13 years old. My dad was trying to buy a 1965 Plymouth Fury from the local dealer, and the local dealer was trying to sell the car, and he gave my dad an English setter female. Well, I grew up on a farm and the closest neighbor was about a mile away, and I started with a BB gun when I was six years old, so by the time I was 13, I ran the legs off of that dog. The first time I shot at a quail with my grandpa’s sweet sixteen Belgium Browning, I got 2 with one shot. I retrieved one and she retrieved and ate the other one. From there on, she turned out to be a pretty darn good dog. I always gave her the heads of the birds that I shot, but I don't think she ever ate another bird after that first one. Then in 1980, I was teaching high school agriculture when the industrial arts teacher and I both bought litter mate pups without knowing they were litter mates. Mike pretty much did what he wanted and my buddy's dog was in the pocket all the time. Funny, seems like Command Sergeant Majors tend to demand respect, even from their dogs. But we hunted quails all over Western Illinois. My hunting buddy Dave said that Mike was chuckle headed, but that he did have a full choke bore nose. Mikey didn't have much style, but he knew what to do with the quail. The next year, I bought a female pup from Len Jenkins in Michigan that came in to St Louis on the airplane. She was a pretty little thing and on her pedigree was Mr Thor and Flaming Star, so she had some pretty good blood. Annie raised a ton of pups for me. I just let my dogs run together and when she showed up ready to have pups, we oftentimes put them in the basement. When the pups got a little bit older, I would advertise them in the Peoria Journal Star and I had pups all over the tri-state region. I was always really happy when people would tell me that their pup turned out to be the best dog they'd ever had, and quite a few people came back for a second pup. I remember one young guy, whenever he would talk about his dog Dusty, he would say, “Dusty, bless his heart.” And he got a second dog after Dusty was gone. Then I got a direct daughter of Stokeley Diablo Jake and a direct daughter of The Performer. I really never did hunt either one of them, but I raised a lot of great pups out of them. My oldest granddaughter just got home from Saint Kitts Island where she is halfway through her veterinarian schooling. She says that her interest in being a vet started when she was just a very small girl sitting in with the females having their babies. But like I mentioned above, we moved to town, I got sick, and my bloodlines ended with Pearl. That's very sad, but I guess that had to happen for BUCKET LIST PUPS to come into existence.

STUD DOGS. I've been very fortunate to breed to some great dogs in the last three years. My first two litters were out of Erin's Wild Atlantic Way, the next litter was out of Snyder’s Pioneer Scout, and the last litter is out of my own dog, Bucket List Race, who is the direct son of Wild Atlantic Way. Also, I have an all age type female in Utah that was bred to American Gunfighter. They are pictured below.
