NEW YEAR’S THOUGHTS
by Dr Helmut Raiser,
LAZ* German Shepherd RSV2000/RSVglobal and chairman RSVglobal

“Dear all,
what to write as a summing up for 2023? First the bad news or the good ones? I believe it's best to start with the bad news, followed by the brighter, for what is life without hope?”

“So, let's begin! Another year comes to an end, undoubtedly for many of us not one of the best in our lives. But that seems to be the case when you give positions of power to incompetent and narrow-minded persons. I experienced this back in the SV (Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde) and now we are witnessing it here in Germany.“

GOOD OPPORTUNITY
“After the Federal Constitutional Court confirmed a violation of the Basic Law by our german government, there was a good opportunity for a fundamental course correction. I had hoped for this red card, but anyway, there is renewed hope that the separation of powers is not yet dead.”

“This hope extends to our dog sport and the training methods and tools we require. Given today’s political currents, we can only hope for common sense. After all, we aim to preserve the cultural heritage of the working dog. If not us, then who? And for that, we need the stick hits in protection work, and also other intelligent training tools as supplement.”

THE TRUE FACE
“Just as the german government refuses to revise its misguided decisions and resolutions on the 2024 federal budget, for the energy transition, transportation transition, heating transition, agricultural transition etc, they will certainly not be enthusiastic over, or very bothered of, our concerns regarding the preservation of the working dog and its necessities.”

“The grand transformation is revealing its true face. The dire consequences of the policy shifts are presented with cold ruthlessness, and the burdens are callously shifted from the state to the citizens, to private households, businesses, public infrastructure, and the citizens themselves."

"While in democracy, politicians are supposed to serve the people, the situation has now reversed. The people are being exploited for the ideological and material interests of those in power. I have experienced something similar in the SV, where ultimately the dog suffered. Even though everything should benefit the dog.”

WISE WORDS
“This brings to mind Albert Einstein's quote:
Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.”

“The monstrous claim to delight the world, save the climate, and transform our lives is juxtaposed with the simultaneous inability to provide basic state services. The state assumes tasks for which it is not meant.”

“Many words don't make a foolish decision wiser, but a thought that is correct cannot be denied in the long run. Nor can ideology nullify Mother Nature, and physics. Hopefully dog sports enthusiasts understand that relinquishing one's rights due to anticipatory obedience or opportunism, is not the answer. In a democracy, especially when rights are enshrined in the constitution, and the rulers are shown the red card for not respecting it, one must fight for those rights.”

MORE HOPE
“Now, onto the hope and positive elements. For over 50 years, I have been active in dog sports, and I quickly realized that ‘the working population’ in the SV was being abused by the authorities, leading to the loss of the original idea of breeding a good working dog. Our protests with the authorities were in vain, so I engaged in seminars at the grassroots level, unfortunately also without success. I had to understand that people did not want political stress in their leisure and hobbies or, for opportunistic reasons, preferred to follow a prescribed narrative.”

“It was only when we 2007 founded RSV2000 that we could finally work creatively and constructively for the preservation of the working dog. After successfully overcoming all obstacles for ten years, we had to live through some internal turbulence. Yet, as often happens after a melt down, there is a constructive opportunity for a rebuild afterwards.”

FIVE CONTINENTS
“During 2023 we experienced a big upturn after we merged with sport friends and colleagues who work and breed Malinois. Not only domestically but internationally, people have recognized that RSV2000/RSVglobal is implementing ground-breaking ideas in breeding, training, testing, and administration. We now have like-minded individuals in five continents who are ambitious and participate in preserving the philosophy of breeding a strong and healthy working dog.”

“Despite repeatedly offering to integrate these valuable members into the FCI, our invites have been ignored. Therefore, starting January 2024, RSVglobal will provide a platform for these members, not only in training but also in breeding. We can offer pedigrees of our own.”

CIVIL COURAGE
“I believe at this point, that from sad experiences new hope can emerge. This hope is based on the possibility that the last dog handler will eventually realize that what those in power preach is not always healthy for either the dogs or the dog handlers.”

“It is more important than ever to think for oneself and have the corresponding civil courage to advocate for our own interests. The associations to which we are affiliated prefer to retreat in the face of opposition. Thus, we must endure that the loud opponents of our dog sports cause significant damage with their emotional and irrational arguments.”

“The hope lies in the possibility that the common enemy unites opponents and that the existential threat to our dog sports mobilizes forces to fight for our interests. Adaptive behaviours and abandoning our necessities have not brought peace and have led us to the current precarious situation.”

“So, always remember dear members and friends, hope is the last thing that abandons us. I wish you all a Happy and Hopeful 2024!”

NEW YEAR’S THOUGHTS
by Mathias Dögel,
LAZ* Belgian Shepherd RSV2000/RSVglobal

“Dear members,
I would like to give you a summing up of the year 2023. At the beginning of the year, after great efforts, we finally succeeded in obtaining the VDH breeding approval for the Malinois variety of the Belgian Shepherd Dog in our club. This, as you all know, was a process of immense effort. At this point I would like to thank all the supporters who helped us present the required number of dogs to ultimately receive approval for the Malinois.”

BREEDING PART
“We are currently trying to get the other varieties of Belgian Shepherd Dog approved, as it is well known that it makes little sense to limit ourselves to one variety. As things stand today, the requirements for approving further varieties are almost unattainable, so we are once again in conflict with the VDH. There is a lack of cynological understanding, especially regarding the fact that a Malinois litter can also produce Tervuerens.”

“It looks like we will probably only have to enforce our claims against the VDH through legal proceedings again. It is very frustrating to work with a major association whose mission should be to promote the development and welfare of its member clubs. Ironically, our membership fees appear to be used primarily to defend ourselves in litigation against us, the members.”

COMMON SENSE
“Here we urgently need to appeal to common sense and rethink the concepts of our umbrella organizations. In its function, an umbrella organization should support the member associations, promote their development, and ensure that our cynological work is recognized in politics and society. Keyword: Service provider!”

“But the opposite is the case, and we dog lovers feel the absence of this important lobbying work every day, for which we finance our umbrella organization. Ultimately, we should all be aware that the work in society to achieve the desired acceptance of our hobby can only be done by us.”

“You can also see this in the initiatives that emerged in 2023. Something like this is effective and strengthens our position. So, let's hope that this grassroots commitment bears fruit and let's also hope that one or two association officials don't stand in our way. For the benefit of the working dog.”

NEW BREEDERS
“After we finally received our breeding license in January 2023, we were able to continuously record an enormous influx of new breeders into our club throughout the year. The first litters were born this year and there is a lot of interest in the RSV2000 breeding system, which certainly takes the approach of conventional breeding systems to absurdity.”

“A good breeder knows what’s important and which dog he wants to use for breeding. There is no need for a supervisor to express his opinion and tell the breeder what to do and what not to do. A healthy breeding system is based on the complete and comprehensive collection of data about our animals to build up a valuable wealth of knowledge in the form of a transparent database that ambitious breeders can use.”

GOOD DOGS
“Ultimately, the responsibility lies with the breeder, because he is the one who plans the mating, carries it out, accompanies the puppies and finally hand them over to the new owners. For me, this responsibility is a sovereignty that needs to be protected and preserved. Because it is the breeder who breeds good dogs. And it is the breeder who takes responsibility if a mating does not work out and the result is accompanied by possible complications.”

“According to this requirement is why we have our Talent Sightings, which was fully booked at every single event this year. For the coming year, it is important to find committed local groups who are willing to organize such an event and thus make a valuable contribution to our club life.”

SPORTING PART
“In 2023, CACIT Germany took place in Braunsbedra for the first time. The success of this event is undisputed and has set a milestone in German IGP history. The principle of CACIT is simply described.”

“Place the dog and handler at the center of the event. Make sure the judging is respectful and sporting. Recognize achievement and ensure that all visitors can spend a few great days among like-minded people.”

“This series of events was created with this idea and will now take place again in Braunsbedra. The date is March 21st to 24th, 2024. You are all cordially invited to take part in the event, to visit it and of course to support it with your help so that the event will be an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.”
“Furthermore, next year we will also open the RSV2000 German Championships to starters with a Malinois. This event will take place in Lugau from May 10th to 12th, 2024.”

FMBB QUALIFICATIONS
“I think that 2024 will bring us some sporting highlights where we can live out our hobby and spend a nice time together in the usual pleasant company.”

“Another important aspect is the inclusion of the RSV2000 in the FMBB. As of January 1, 2024, we will be one of the recognized member clubs of the World Association of Belgian Shepherd Dogs. In order to discuss our members qualification conditions for the FMBB World Championship, a meeting was held with the current World Cup qualification host, the DMC.”

“We discussed various approaches as to what qualification for our members for the World Championships could look like and ultimately came to the decision that from 2024 the DMC will have 6 starters (qualification at the championship) and the RSV will have 6 starters (qualification at CACIT Germany) will be sent to a joint qualification examination. This test is expected to take place in November 2024 and will then determine the team with 6 Starters and 2 Reserves for the WM 2025."

"The performance judge or judges will be selected from the FMBB pool and the helpers will be appointed in joint agreement between the LAZ RSV2000 and the responsible contact person of the DMC agreed. In 2024, the DMC will host this competition. The following year the RSV2000.”

LET’S FINISH!
“Dear members, together we have achieved extraordinary successes, overcome challenges, and set important milestones in the history of our association. Our joint efforts have borne fruit, be it in obtaining breeding approval for the Malinois or in being accepted into the FMBB. Each and every one of you has contributed to getting us to where we are today.”

“We have stood our ground in conflict, defended our rights and proven that we are more than just a club - we are a community that sticks together and stands up for our beliefs. The fact that all our events were fully booked, and we had a huge influx of new breeders, speaks volumes about the trust and recognition we enjoy in the cynological world.”

“However, it is important that we do not ease up. The challenges we face are far from over. We must continue to fight for our rights, advocate for the welfare of our dogs and ensure our voices are heard in the overall organizations. Our mission is to shape the future of working dog breeding and working dog sports positively.”

OUR PASSION
“Let's move even closer together in 2024! I invite each of you to actively participate in our events, be it as a breeder, competitor or as a supporter. Every contribution counts and strengthens our club. The upcoming events, such as the CACIT Germany in Braunsbedra and the German Championships in Lugau, once again offer us the chance to show our passion and commitment to working dog sports.”

“Finally, I would like to emphasize that our success is based on the tireless efforts of every single member. You are the heart and soul of the RSV2000/RSVglobal. Let's go into 2024, with the certainty that together we can achieve anything. For the love for our working dogs, for the passion for sport and for the spirit of community that connects us all.”

“By joining forces, we will continue to make history, for ourselves, for our dogs and for the future of dog sports.”
