ADULT PUREBRED CHINOOK AVAILABLE

Zephyr is an active purebred Chinook that turned 7 years old a couple of weeks ago and is looking for just the right home. He is a goofy, sensitive, complicated soul and is house-trained with basic obedience. He LOVES to be with his people. He has been diagnosed wtih Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) but is stable and not on medication as long as his diet doesn't change rapidly. I've asked his breeder for any information in his relatives that would add to knowledge about potential food intolerances, and he is on a couple of foods he tolerates very well at this time.

Zephyr is looking for a home that needs a devoted companion and that does not have children, ideally a home with experience with sensitive dogs. He is reserved with strangers but given time he warms up he and is very lovable and goofy. Young children concern him greatly, which is why he is unable to stay in his current home which has a young baby and other children frequently in and out of the house. The right new home will be committed to keeping Zephyr separated from children.

Zephyr is able to be left loose in a quiet place in the house and is not destructive. He is crate trained but can complain loudly at being left alone in it. He is generally good with other dogs but is very excited to see them, so it will be important to keep up with his trained check-ins with his owner for treats when he sees them on walks. Zephyr has not been around cats but can be recalled off of wildlife.

Zephyr is intact but should be neutered at the appropriate time (I will cover the cost). He will be placed at no charge in the right home. He is currently located in Michigan but transport can be worked out.

Please email [email protected] for more information.

Chinook (1917–29) was the foundation sire of a new American dog breed, the first breed to have originated in New Hampshire. Arthur Walden of Wonalancet, NH, crossed a mixed-breed dog with a Husky, and a litter was born on January 17, 1917. He named a pup from the litter with the most stamina and intelligence “Chinook.” Walden and Chinook introduced dog sled racing to New Hampshire. Chinook led the first sled dog team to climb to the top of Mount Washington, and was lead dog on Commander Richard E. Byrd’s first Antarctic expedition, moving supplies to its base camp, “Little America.” Byrd described Chinook as a “shock troop” who could be counted on “when the going turned very hard.” On that expedition, Chinook wandered away and was never found. Chinook was established as New Hampshire's state dog in June 2009. The limited-edition bobblehead measures 6.25" high.

Our Chinook Story

So, how did we get here? We have been a part of the Chinook community since Keeta (Great Valley) entered our lives in the spring of 2016. We were immediately hooked on the breed and Luna (Wildcat Valley) came home to us less than a year later. Our daughter acquired a Chinook within months of Luna’s arrival and a cousin also has two of his own. We are truly a Chinook family! We have been members of the Chinook Owners Association (chinook.org) since 2016 and enjoy time on various Chinook pages learning, keeping up to date on all things Chinook, and just being part of the outstanding community of Chinook owners and enthusiasts.

Birch Hollow Chinooks are first time breeders and are very excited about doing our part to keep the Chinook breed strong, healthy and viable for a long time to come. Both Luna and Denali have gone through all of the required testing for our breed, and then some. Genetic testing and a trial breeding analysis have also been done to search for any potential problems and to be sure the pair do not have any closely related ancestors. We were thrilled to see positive results in all areas!

Luna is a big girl for a female Chinook so we searched for a male that was larger than her. One of our aims, besides adding good genetic diversity, health, sound temperament and of course good looks to the Chinook gene pool was to go back to the early days of Chinook breeding when all the dogs were quite large. The Great Chinook, the first of his kind was massive and magnificent.

If you need any additional information or would like to apply for one of the Birch Hollow puppies please let us know.
