SHARE SHARE SHARE Help reunite lost pets with their families. Many of our lost pets end up on the streets or in high-kill shelters--with a proper search never being made for their families. Please help build this page so that Houstonians have a place to share their lost pets and rescuers can help their healthy pups and kitties get back home.

wearing collar or chipped Y or N? Spayed or neutered? Any distinguishing details
**If your pet is micro-chipped--PLEASE make sure their chip is properly registered and that your information is up to date in the company's database. Sometimes we run across chipped pets and there is no information**
Please be prepared to provide photographs with your pup/kitty and/or vet records to verify ownership of your pet. We want to be sure we are not giving up these animals to be used as bait or to be resold. Animal rescuers are doing their best to protect an innocent when they pick up a lost pet. Please also check your local animal controls! When pups and kitties get here their time is limited!!! HCPHES Veterinary Public Health

TIPS ON FINDING A LOST PET
Important tips to follow IMMEDIATELY when your pet is missing:
Pets travel far quick...and people may pick up to resell or take to a shelter/new home far away. BELOW ARE TIPS THAT HAVE BEEN VERY SUCCESSFUL...DO NOT GIVE UP AS GETTING THE WORD OUT TO A BROAD AREA CAN RESULT IN PETS SHOWING UP MONTHS LATER. Important to not just post signs...use many different methods as people miss signs all the time and not everyone has the internet. File a lost dog report on our portal linked to Helping Lost Pets at www.helpinglostpets.com/petdetail/addpet.aspx?rc=o713 AND file with
www.lostdogsoftexas.net AND http://lostmydoggie.com/
POST "Reward" on visible signs in a 5 mile radius in Spanish and English. BEST WAY TO FIND A PET. Do not post REWARD on the sign if the dog is skittish as people could chase dog into harm’s way. Leave items with a familiar scent outside your home. Walk, drive, bike slowly through where pet was lost and whistle or call his/her name….pets often hide or could be injured nearby. Look in drains in case pet fell down into the drain and cannot get out. Consider hiring a Pet Search and Rescue service that uses trained dogs to track lost pet. Post/search on petharbor.com--check Montgomery County, Galveston County, HCPHES, Pasadena and BARC. Search without color or gender. Most Shelters kills pets after 3 business days-including the HSPCA and HSUS--so important to check daily. Tags can easily fall off or get removed. And, shelters often make errors when scanning for chips and TAGS OFTEN FALL OFF. Pets often end up several cities/counties away--for example fort bend county animal services (http://fortbendcountypets.com/?cat=7, city of Bellaire, League City, city of Sugarland, city of Richmond, city of Conroe, city of Humble, Galveston County, Missouri City, City of South Houston, City of Pasadena, City of Katy, City of Brookshire, Pearland, Friendswood, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, etc…, if someone traveling home picks them up on their way back to another city. So, check all neighboring county and city shelters. Note: the shelters do not list many of the shelter pets on the website and can sometimes make errors over the phone…so in addition to calling and emailing the shelters, make certain you go to the shelter to hand them a flyer with a photo! [see attached Shelter Number List for common shelters—but not all are on this sheet]
Post at all local vet and pet stores; See if nearby gas stations will post a flyer near their cashier; hand flyer to local police or constable officers that cover your area; hand flyer to landscape companies, postal workers, etc…Post flyer at churches, apartment complexes, etc…
Post/search on www.hspca.org . And, give flyer with photo to the shelter directly as they do not always check the public postings. Make certain you check both the "found dog" or “Found cat” page . NOTE: Shelter does not list the dogs or cats actually at the shelter on the stray hold. You must go to shelter directly to view strays. Check daily as this shelter only holds pets 72 hours before killing or placing in adoption program. Post with www.petnotice.com and http://chron.kaango.com/
Post with www.fidofinder.com-- or tabbytracker.com: very successful sites!!! www.findtoto.com is a paid service that calls people in your zip code
craigslist.com---both pet section and lost and found section. Check for people selling pets too-in case stolen. You will also get a lot of crazy people responding to your craigslist ad--including people that falsely claim they will return your dog if you pay them money.--so be very careful. www.cap4pets.org (file a lost pet report online and email them the photo)..go to the shelter to see if they have your pet! www.petfinder.com (post under classified ads AND search under shelters)
