This morning, our hearts were shattered as we said goodbye to Dumpling 😓
Dumpling originally came to us before we had even opened our temporary facility in Selkirk.
From the very beginning, there was something clearly wrong with Dumpling. Her legs were starting to splay, and despite trying everything (intensive rehab, leg splints, etc), we couldn't correct them. But Dumpling was dojng amazing. She started developing some bad pododermatitis, and eventually, we came to the conclusion a month or so ago that she needed a wheelchair. An incredibly kind woman by the name of Peydra was able to donate her past bunnies' chair, and it was the perfect fit! But we needed to amputate her one back leg to make it work.
The amputation was booked, but in recent weeks, her health started to decline. Her front legs were getting worse, her pressure sores were getting harder to control, and she had an issue with her tail pop up a couple of weeks ago, and the tail started to die off.
She spent the first few months of her life at HQ and the last few with a kind, amazing foster Tracey, who worked tirelessly on a daily basis to clean and medicate Dumpling. Unfortunately, her condition reached a point beyond what any human could do. She was starting to struggle beyond a good quality of life, and we knew we couldn't let her suffer.
So today, with Dr. Lin, Mrs. Popcorn, Mr. Binky and her beautiful foster Tracey by her side, Dumpling binkied across the Rainbow Bridge surrounded by love, grass, and all of the treats she could ever want.
So many of you rallied behind Dumpling, including the wonderful students in the P.A.C.E. program at The U of W, who has a huge fundraiser planned for Dumpling tomorrow. The fundraiser and GoFundMe were originally to help pay for modifications to her wheelchair and help pay for her amputation. Tomorrow will now be a memorial fundraiser in Dumpling's honor, for all of her friends who are still fighting illness in rescue.
Dumpling, you will forever be loved and remembered by an entire community of animal lovers and your husbun, Simon. We hope you are enjoying so many dandelions at the bridge.
Sweet dreams, forever and always 🐰🌈
