To keep our breed healthy and genetically diverse, we occasionally do an outcross breeding. This means that we breed our Havana Browns with a genetically diverse cat that is black or blue (grey cats are genetically blue). We first do DNA tests to ensure that they are healthy and don't carry any unwanted genetic conditions that could be passed on. The resulting kittens are the first of a new line and we call them F1.
Kittens can be brown, espresso (black) or blue/grey, depending on what colors are carried by the parents. We choose the kittens with the type most like the Havana parent to continue the line. The remaining kittens go to pet homes that are screened and approved. They are usually a little less expensive than a full Havana Brown, but the cost of raising them and providing Vet care is the same.

All except a little espresso female are already reserved. They will be ready to go home the end of May.

What is a 'purebred' Havana Brown? Any breed of cat will only maintain its type, temperament and health if breeding is controlled, and pure Havana Browns are bred to pure Havana Browns. That would be two cats who have a registered Havana Brown pedigree. They must have a certified pedigree from a recognized registering body such as CFA, TICA, ACFA, CCA, LOOF, etc. A pedigree does not make a pure breed, but a pure breed must have a pedigree.
When looking for a breeder, always ensure you do your research. Backyard breeders sell kittens below the normal asking price and they are normally not vaccinated, microchipped, spayed/neutered or registered. They may share the same coat color, but they won't come from lines genetically tested for good health nor have the temperament consistent with the breed. Preservation breeders are very particular about which cats are used for breeding, they must be of sound health and temperament, DNA free of inherited conditions and genetically diverse enough to produce healthy offspring.
When you get a kitten from a line of Havana Brown's, you will be able to see first hand, the health and temperment of the line your kitten comes from.
A pedigree may not guarantee a cat with good health, type and temper, but the chances are a lot greater if you know the genetics of the line and the quality of your breeder.

What is an 'outcross'?
When a breeder of pedigreed cats determines that the genetic diversity in their breed is becoming too small, they take action to keep the breed healthy by adding an unrelated cat with like type, to their line. Generally this comes in the form of a domestic cat of diverse origin. When the domestic cat is bred to a pure Havana Brown, the offspring are considered outcross. These cats will resemble a Havana Brown in look and temperament. They can be brown or grey but more often are an espresso color (brownish black). The kitten that is most like the desired HB type is kept for breeding and the remainder are spayed/neutered before they are placed with their new families.
If you are interested in adopting one of these outcross kittens, you will still need to fill out an application and be a approved, however the adoption fee is generally half of the purebred price.
