When a request for a “heads shot” as opposed to a “headshot” hit my inbox, I read on with curiosity to see what this unusual request was all about. As a pet photographer, I typically get emails from people asking about photographs with their menagerie of pets: dogs, cats, birds, horses, even turtles and all sorts of reptiles. At first glance, this request seemed outside of my “Pets and their People” specialty. I read on to discover that this potential client was about to have his book published and his publisher needed a headshot for the back cover of the book. As you will see when you read his book, David Dennis does things in innovative ways. In this instance, David informed his publisher that he’d be sending a “heads shot,” a photograph of himself with his sweet little red-nosed puppy, Thais. I chuckled to myself thinking, I don’t know this person, but if his dog is going on his book cover, he’s my kind of people – pet people! So, I picked up the phone and we scheduled a photo shoot. After a few attempts of typically adorable puppy antics: sniffing new smells, loving licks and kisses on her people … wait A SQUIRREL … barking at my camera, and probably a few too many treats, I got some adorable and silly pictures of Thais. But I still needed to get “the heads shot” David wanted for his book. So, we walked over to another side of the park. And, then with the magical and mysterious squeak of a hidden noise maker – curious little Thais peered right at me intent on discovering where that intriguing noise came from at the same moment that David gently had wrapped his arm around her. Nailed it! I got the “heads shot” David was looking for. David’s book, Gameness, is thoughtfully written guidance about navigating adversity and how to take a constructive approach to getting through those challenging times. I encourage you to read his book and I am honored to have had the opportunity to have taken the author’s “heads shot” and to meet David, his wife, Becky and sweet playful Thais. Recommendations from Second Chance Rescue: With the 4th of July right around the corner, we want to remind everyone of a few tips to keep your furry friends safe!
First and foremost: microchip your pets! If your dog happens to get loose, a registered microchip with your contact information can ensure your dog gets back home to you!
If your dog has anxiety around fireworks: double leash your pet on walks (a slip lead + a standard leash on a martingale collar or front-clip harness), avoid going outside during the fireworks with your dog, and speak to your vet about anti-anxiety medication for your dog.

Bella and Sweetie are BBFs. They run and tussle and play in full enjoyment of each other's presence, the grass at their feet and the sun warming their faces. When the aren't romping and rolling the are nested in close and cuddly on the grass with their person in complete adoration of him. I can see why they hold him so preciously close. He's a pet person for sure. The three of them are about to embark on a cross-country road trip! And the best part is they are doing it in style! Yep! Their person bought an RV, "the bus," as he calls it, so he could travel with his furry love bugs across the country in their own mobile pet friendly hotel. That's what "pet people" do and he's definitely a pet person! Life was not always so filled with love and grace for Bella and Sweetie. They were both rescued from sad circumstances which have faded away into the forgotten - ousted by the precious memories of rolling in the grass, romping and tossing about, and most importantly piling in for belly rubs, cuddles and love of their most favorite human ever. I loved photographing them, but I loved watching them just be full of bliss and peace with each other even more.

Sweet Loki is a gentle giant. His people drove 7 hours to rescue him from a shelter. He quietly comes up next to you with his favorite ball in his mouth and ever so gently nudges your hand with his nose to sweetly entice you to a game a of fetch.
Black dogs and cats are the most looked over and euthanized in shelters, consider the love these beautiful creatures have to share with a family regardless of the superstitions pertaining to the color of their fur and consider adopting, rescuing and loving these fur babies into a "fur-ever" home.

I had the exciting opportunity over the weekend to meet these beautiful birds up close and personal at the Florida Exotic Bird Sanctuary in Hudson Florida. Over 800 parrot that were once pets but out lived their people or their circumstances had changed and the sanctuary took them in as permanent sanctuary residents. They now live in sanctuary as birds, no longer pets, and have a lifetime commitment from the sanctuary for their care and wellbeing. Some of these birds are so clever that they lock their own enclosures and have the intelligence of a 6 year old human child. Beauty and brains!
