Beautiful day yesterday for woods walks with some day school pups.
One of my most favorite things is teaching owners how to join their dog, in their dogâs world. The first time Breck came to Bass Pro, she was terrified and refused to enter the building. We did some wonderful work outside in the lot and by the entrance. This time, she was able to allow her curiosity overpower her fear. We did a lot of sniffing to keep her in as much of a social brain as possible and she was delighted to see her mom joining in the fun!

The rest of our latest Saturday class. These owners and dogs did so well. Very impressed!
A few fun shots of our last class- most of these dogs have been pretty reactive towards other dogs or humans in the past. We focused on relaxing together as a team and as a pack. Beautiful work!

Ruby the Wheaten is staying with us to work on her serious dog reactivity. Sheâs doing a wonderful job learning how to overcome her fear around other dogs and rediscovering her social skills. Sheâs even playing with others and seeking support when she feels overwhelmed by the pack. Video in the comments!

Winnie working on âdownâ from a distance so her foster parents can help her âtake it downâ a notch when she gets too excited.
âOhhh he doesnât really need a muzzle?! Thatâs so...sadâ What? No! Muzzles arenât a bad thing!! Both of these dogs are dog reactive and Mia (black) especially has trust issues. The danger of them escalating into making bad decisions is real. Claudia Galeas has worked very hard with both dogs and over some time, they have learned to trust each other, most of the time. The muzzles have given them a way to stay safe and allowed Claudia and I the ability to relax, knowing they canât really hurt each other if things get too intense during play (and they do occasionally). The dogs are comfortable in the muzzles + the handlers being relaxed = beautiful growth in their relationship. PS. MooShu is the the brown Shar-pei-X and heâs adoptable through Last Hope K9 Rescue.
Jacey and I took an impromptu video earlier. Weâve been working on her state of mind and basic obedience which I usually keep simple for dogs like this who really need a solid recall and impulse control. Weâve just started a âwalking down.â Our precision isnât clean or perfect yet but she gets the concept of waiting for the next cue and taking a breath. She also has started doing an off leash heel thatâs a nice bonus to the transitional lead work weâve been doing. Sheâs come pretty far in a few weeks and Iâm proud of this adorable/adoptable pup!
This is Jacey! Jacey is staying with us for a board and train to learn how to chill out, be reliable off leash and how to trust her handler. Her foster describes her as âreactive-at-everythingâ and sheâs definitely a nervous girl. So we are teaching some skills and building confidence! Stay tuned!
Even in the rain we play! Working on some light obedience with Finn while Murphy teaches Baby the Boston how to play tug.
Ever wonder what a healthy game of tug looks like between dogs? Casey (the bigger tri-colored) is finishing up his vacation with us playing with Murphy (chocolate lab mix).
