Along with other UK-based charities, MAP condemns Prime Minister Boris Johnson's recent comments on the International Criminal Court's investigation on the situation in Palestine. This investigation is bringing victims, survivors and their families one step closer to justice – but political interference by states, such as the UK, risks pushing that out of reach.

✨ ✨ EXTRACT
The investigation is the first genuine hope that alleged perpetrators of the most serious crimes will be held to account for their actions. The ICC is committed to undertaking an investigation that is “conducted independently, impartially and objectively, without fear or favour.” Providing impartial justice and ending decades of impunity would bring the prospect of lasting peace closer and would signal an end to the suffering endured by generations across the region.

✨ What happened?
Three years ago, on 30 March 2018, a series of widespread civil society-initiated protests began in . Dubbed the “Great March of Return”, these weekly demonstrations demanded the lifting of the illegal 13-year closure of Gaza and right of to return to the homes they fled or were expelled from in 1947/8.

⛑️The protests, which an independent Commission of Inquiry determined were “civilian in nature”, were met with the widespread and systematic use excessive force by Israeli forces, including live ammunition, rubber-coated steel bullets and tear gas.

⛑️According to the more than 7,000 people were shot with live ammunition, predominantly to the lower limbs. Of these, approximately 1,200 suffered particularly devastating injuries involving significant bone loss, requiring expensive and painful long-term reconstruction treatment to repair their damaged limbs.

⛑️Gaza’s beleaguered and aid-dependent health system was teetering on the brink of collapse even before the influx of new injuries, as a result of chronic shortages of essential medicines, equipment, medical specialists, and fuel needed to keep hospital generators running through daily electricity outages. Since 2020, Gaza’s meagre healthcare resources have been further stretched by the arrival of COVID-19.
⛑️ Since the last three years, our programme with has been helping patients overcome their agonising injuries. Since March 2018 MAP has facilitated 12 surgical missions to Gaza, and a total of 675 limb reconstruction surgeries have been performed by the Unit. These medical missions have provided surgeries for patients and on-the-job training for local teams in the latest skills and techniques in treating the most complex limb injuries. Not only have patients been able to recover functioning in their damaged limbs, they have reported increased mobility, lower pain and less anxiety following their treatment

Protest camps were set up at five locations along the Gaza perimeter fence, hosting music and dance performances, food sellers, and talks where older members of the community could share their memories of their homeland with younger generations. On recurrent Fridays until the end of 2019, thousands of Palestinians marched from these camps towards the perimeter fence, where Israel had deployed more than 100 snipers.

The protests, which an independent Commission of Inquiry determined were “civilian in nature”, were met with the widespread and systematic use excessive force by Israeli forces, including live ammunition, rubber-coated steel bullets and tear gas.

⛑As a result, 214 Palestinians were killed, including 46 children. A further 36,100 people were, including 8,800 children, were injured. By the end of 2019, 156 limb amputations were performed, and around twenty-seven people were paralysed as a result of injuries. At least three 🚑 were killed and 845 injured.

This week we have delivered two to hospitals in amid a of cases that is once again straining the capacity of hospitals to respond.🚑 🚑 🚑

Daily cases have tripled in the last two weeks😷 with 1,463 people testing positive for in 24 hours and more than 16 new deaths recorded in the last few days. More than 200 people are now seriously ill and receiving treatment in high dependency units or units⛑️
In November 2020, during Gaza’s first major wave of cases, the Ministry of Health in Gaza identified a critical gap in ’ ability to generate sufficient oxygen to provide care to coronavirus patients. Amid the latest surge, generation needs are once again becoming critical in Gaza’s sector.

This week MAP, with the support of the occupied Palestinian territory Humanitarian Fund, delivered two oxygen generators to Gaza. The theme of today's is “Building a fairer, healthier world”

As cases continue to rise in the occupied territory, we reiterate our call for rapid, comprehensive and equitable access to for .

MAP’s position paper, Equal access to COVID-19 vaccines: who is responsible in the occupied Palestinian territory?💉💉 provides an overview of the dire COVID-19 context in Palestine🇵🇸 👉👉map.org.uk/CV19vaccines

⚡"While Israel is rolling out one of the fastest vaccination programmes in the world, almost five million Palestinians living under its 53-year military occupation are being left behind. The impact of perpetual military occupation and blockade mean that the local Palestinian health system⛑ does not have the financial or material resources required to sustain COVID-19 response long-term🧫💊, nor to implement a rapid and comprehensive vaccination💉 programme for the population.

⚡The paper has been published amid news that Israel will deliver several thousand COVID-19 vaccines to the West Bank, but continues to refuse to accept its legal duty as an occupying power to ensure rapid, comprehensive and equitable coverage for the entire population of the . 🇵🇸

⚡Reacting to the news, MAP CEO Dr Aimee Shalan said:

⚡“While these limited supplies will mean that vaccinations can finally begin in the West Bank and Gaza, they fall well short of meeting the needs of the millions of Palestinians whose lives continue to be devastated by the pandemic.

⚡Reliance on donations and aid will inevitably lead to a Palestinian vaccination programme that is piecemeal, incoherent, and glacially slow. Israel’s duties extend far beyond humanitarian gestures: as the occupying power it is obligated to ensure that the entire population of occupied Palestine can access a vaccination programme that is rapid, equitable, and comprehensive.”

On meet Haitham Al Saqqa, our Programme Assistant:
"In there is little awareness in our communities about the rights of people with disabilities, and many continue to look down on us.
"This environment makes it difficult for people with disabilities to participate in society. I have a disability myself; restricted growth. Through my work at MAP, I advocate for the rights of people with disabilities and ensure that they are involved in all our projects. I try to send the message to people with disabilities that they too can be empowered and leaders in their communities.
"MAP partners with two organisations in Gaza – the Nuseirat Rehabilitation and Social Training Association and the Social Developmental Forum (SDF) – who provide rights-based and digital training and support to people with disabilities. It is amazing to see the difference that the training makes to those involved.
"One person, Naji, recently set up Palestine’s first national football team for people with physical disabilities. Before attending the sessions, he was unaware of his own rights. Now he is one of Gaza’s most active disability rights advocates, sitting on the Steering Committee of the General Union for People with Disabilities.
"An important part of our partners’ training is equipping people with the skills to influence decision-makers to help bring about change. When COVID-19 first broke out in Gaza, there was a lack of accessible information about the virus. Naji joined some youth in our project to campaign for this, successfully getting a sign language interpreter included in the Ministry of Health’s daily updates.
"Thanks to funding from MAP, our partner SDF have also delivered information on how to keep safe during the pandemic to the public, ensuring it is accessible to all. Their ‘Fight Corona’ campaign has reached more than a million and a half people on social media. It is run by people with and without disabilities working together, which sends an important message that people with disabilities play an integral role in society, and one not only limited to advocating for their own rights."
