Bram who was found curled up in a dug out grave was released last week. He was so lucky that he was discovered by a dog on a walk through the cemetery 🦔

No hot dogs allowed ❌🌭

A lil reminder for the dog mums out there it is haaaat! Have been asked to share as their little paws can get burnt on the ground and midday heat is not the one for them.

We want cool dogs not hot dogs 💙

Useful information from PDSA, especially relevant with the school holidays….

With children and pets spending more time together over the summer holidays, it's super important to watch dogs closely and listen to their body language ⚠️

Dogs' stress signals often get misunderstood or missed, with some owners not realising their dog is unhappy until they growl, snap or even bite.

The canine ladder of communication is a useful guide, showing the different signals dogs show through their body language to communicate. As a dog gets more upset, their body language may change according to the steps on the ladder 🚦

It’s important to note that all dogs are different - not every dog will show every behaviour on the ladder and might not follow the same order.

[Visual description: An infographic explaining Kendal Shepherd’s ladder of communication and how to recognise stress in dogs by the signs they show in their body language. This is a traffic light system with red signals being the worst. Green signals are: Yawning, blinking, nose licking and turning their head away. Yellow signals are: Sitting and turning their body away, walking away, creeping and having their ears back. Orange signals are: Standing crouched, tail tucked, lying down with their belly exposed in a submissive way, stiffening up and staring. Red signals are: Growling, snapping and biting.]

WHAT THE F?

Recognising stress responses in dogs.

Fight or flight are well known reactions to fear or stress, but these other “F” words are also important to understand and be aware of as they may not always be so obvious.

Freeze, Fawn, Fidget or Fool around are also responses to stress or fear and are also commonly seen in people.

Some dogs may have a genetic predisposition to one type of response while some react based on previous experience - what has worked for them before or what hasn’t. Some dogs have different reactions depending on the specific context.

Recognising and taking note of situations or circumstances where these responses are seen is important in understanding how our dogs are feeling.

When we recognise a fear or a stress response, we are able to intervene and advocate for our dogs.

Big thank you Northumbrian Hedgehog Rescue for looking after Bram.
Well done Rusty and Penny for using your wonderful noses to find Bram so we could get him to safety ….

Last Monday we received a call about a hedgehog found in a grave, which
had been prepared for the unfortunate recipient. Thankfully, as the lady was walking her dogs through the graveyard, her two spaniels drew her attention to the grave when she spotted the hedgehog tucked into the corner.
He is now with us where he will spend a short time until he reaches the optimum weight for release, luckily he is none the worse for his experience.
He was originally named William but as we already have a William, we have renamed him Bram 🦔

Thank you Speak Dog
Slippy floors can be a big issue both physically and mentally. For fearful/anxious dogs, flooring can add an additional level of worry for them ….

Floors!

So I have 11 dogs here, they all live inside and yes I like things to be clean and tidy.

The floors are tiled ( this was from the previous owner of the house 2 years ago) which is great for cleaning those muddy paw prints off especially during winter when the floors have little paw prints on just from going in the garden.

My dogs are mix of ages here from 4 to 13 years old.

Now I like my house to look nice, but above anything else I want my dogs to move around without skidding, slipping or using thier nails slightly to try and get grip and traction.

Many people think about mats and rugs as dogs get older and struggle more with their mobility but what about the youngsters.

The fact they might be little whirlwind now with no obvious signs of mobility issues means we should protect that as much as possible, not wait for it to visibly deteriorate.

Walking on slippy floors is also very likely to cause at minumin some muscle tightening which in turn could lead to pain and behavioural changes.

Personally I am keen on not just managing the environment for the oldies but tryng to prevent possible issues for the youngsters.

It's really common to think about these things when they are needed but not think about them as prevention.

Slippy floors means dogs often are contracting muscles, I guess similar to how we would stepping onto an ice rink ( happy to hear advise on this as I'm not qualified in this area)

We all age and we are all likely to need support in our older years but little changes now can have a big impact later on.

Simple changes like mats, rugs and runners, and teaching dogs how to use a ramp now rather than when they desperately need it can make a BIG difference to your dogs living environment 🥰

Yes it might not be as visually pleasing for me but personally my dogs welfare is WAY more important.

Think about the future as well as the now 😊
