Deacon is doing really well! We are back to our daily walks, he is now going up and down stairs. He is getting his sassy attitude back and he is back to his stubborn self 🤣 we are 6.5 weeks PO TPLO and other than his pulled groin muscle he is walking and using his leg very well.

I posted this on my personal page yesterday but here is a follow up for Deacon:
What a stressful few days 😢 Deacon started limping/hopping around last Thursday morning. No amount of rest or pain meds was helping. Ran to the Surgeon last Friday for more pain meds since his ran out on Thursday. He was getting worse over the holiday weekend. Went to the Vet yesterday for more meds and muscle relaxers. Called the Surgeon yesterday and they squeezed us in this morning. I felt so bad for Deacon today. He pulled Dave into the office but once he realized where he was he got that “OH S&%T” look on his face and he put the brakes on. We had our consult with the Vet tech on the floor just inside the door! Deacon was shaking so bad. Took a bit to get him into the back room to be sedated for X-rays. Felt like forever but wasn’t too long. Dr Galindo came out smiling and I must have had a very stressful look on my face because he waved me off and said “It’s not bad”. He sat down with us in the waiting room (we were his last appt this AM) and explained everything to us. Deacon pulled his groin muscle along with another muscle in his leg. He said the groin pull is very painful and will take time to heal but it will heal. He said he is already 40% healed with his knee surgery at 4 weeks. He is amazed! The hardware is perfect, nothing moved, all the pins and screws are in place. While he was sedated he checked his knee and he has full range of motion. He said Deacon will be a bit more sore the next few days because he stretched out his muscle while he was under since it so tight. They did cold laser therapy on him to promote healing and sent him home with pain meds and NSAIDs. We have quite a bit of instruction to get him thru the healing process over the next few weeks but at least my worst fears did not come true! I was afraid he was having plate rejection or an infection because he started licking his incision and knee, causing the incision to start to pink up. I was afraid he may have damaged the hardware or snapped a screw. I was afraid he may have fractured something else in his leg……I could go on and on. He is finally resting comfortably after several hours of whining and restlessness this afternoon. He was so happy to be coming home! He pulled Dave out of the office when they released him from the back room. At least now we have a definitive answer and things we can do (and now know of things we should not do) with him to get him healthy again. We appreciate all the concern, prayers, well wishes, calls, texts and messages. Thank you to those that let me vent and cry on their shoulders the last few days! This girl is exhausted and will be joining Deacon who is sacked out already for the night! ❤️❤️🐶🐾
Today:
I came home at lunch today to let him out and give him his meds. Deacon is walking better, not perfect. You can tell his muscle is still sore. Tonight when I got home from work he is his usual happy self! He is nuzzling me as we lay out in our garage watching the rain and traffic. I know the pain meds are working and I believe the stretches the Surgeon did yesterday to get his X-rays and check the range of motion in his knee actually released some of the tension/tightness he was experiencing.
Once again thank you all for the love and prayers!!

Need some support. Deacon has had a bit of setback and mommy is very upset. We think he may have pulled a groin muscle.
He has been favoring his leg and been very mopey and not his usual self.
We are back to his support harness when he goes outside.
Please send some love and positive vibes to make Jennifer Schaefferfeel better. Thanks….

Deacon definitely approves of and loves supervising the restocking of Annamaet Petfoods bulk cookies! Hometown Pet Center has another happy customer! Ps don’t let him fool you, he had three cookies and then sat there drooling.
Thanks Hailey Renee for posting today❤️❤️❤️

What a stressful morning!!! Deacon was thrilled to be going for a car ride. He even pulled me into the Surgeon’s office to have his staples removed. UNTIL he realized where he was at 😢 He was scrambling all over their slick floors to get OUT. I was single handedly trying to maneuver him along the rug runners to get him to a room. Vet tech comes in to take him back to have the staples removed. She couldn’t handle him at all! I grabbed the handle of the rear end harness and did my best to have him keep all four on the floor as she was leading him back, but he was scared sh& and was scrambling around. I was so afraid he was going to fall or wipe out. One lady immediately started moving rug runners so they would be in his path to the back room. Didn’t take but a few minutes and when they opened up the door he FLEW to the exit. Took all I had to calm him down and not let him hurt himself as I was trying to hear the Tech give me the next 4 weeks of instruction. I had to take him out to the car so I could go back in to schedule his X-rays. He is limping more now, not surprisingly and he has a little bleeding from one or two of the staples, to be expected. He is sacked out behind me now, within arms length sleeping off the chaos of the visit.

Deacon turned another corner today ❤️❤️❤️ When we went out mid morning to potty he stood on his surgical leg and lifted his good leg to p*e!! He only lasted halfway thru before he ended up squatting but he did it!! Then when we got back in the house he was walking on all four instead of hopping around on the three legs 😁

Deacon update: Day 4 PO TPLO
So, he still isn’t sleeping through the night. I remember being sleep deprived until he had his 6 weeks X-rays and he was cleared to do stairs, assisted. He averages 3-4 hours and then either tosses and turns to get comfortable or smack Mom to keep her awake because he can’t sleep, lol 🤣 He is also getting pig headed and stubborn 😡 He wants to go for walks and has not been cleared for that. He leaves his incision alone but wanted to lick his knee today which he shouldn’t due to possible skin trauma or infection. I’m sure he itches since his fur is coming back where he was shaved (Yay because last time I thought he was going to be bald forever!) I cut a pair of my old PJ’s to make a lick sleeve which works thankfully! He is only supposed to walk for 5 minutes or so, just long enough to go potty. It takes him 15-20 minutes. We will rest in the yard when necessary when it takes so long. Personally I think he is milking it to stay outside longer, lol. He is bored but I can’t give him filled bones or kongs to keep him busy since we are trying to get him to lose a few pounds and I do not want him to put any extra pounds on since we can’t walk yet. He does like to sit outside with us and watch traffic go by 😁 It is going to be a long 12 weeks!!! Please pray for my Moms sanity please since he appears to be on the mend 🙏🙏🙏

Deacon update, day 3 PO TPLO:
We had a restful night last night, YAY! We got a solid 4 hours in and then he moved around a few times after that to shift position. When we woke up this morning, Deacon rolled onto his back for his morning belly rubs! I tried to get him to lay flat but he wanted to roll. I figured if it hurt he wouldn’t do it, so morning belly rubs he got 😁. He is back on his normal potty schedule now so he is clearly on the mend. Minimal bruising appeared this morning, not as severe as last time. He laid on the frost covered grass this morning on his potty break, with me putting my hand between his incision and the frost covered ground. He loved it! Oh and he started with his tail wags yesterday! Friends and Dave got tail wags yesterday (none for Mom yet 🤣). He tolerates the icing for his swelling and we just completed a cold laser therapy treatment. Breakfast eaten, meds given now it is nap time. I think I will nap with him too 😁

Deacon update, day 2 PO TPLO
Well, neither Deacon or I slept last night. He was unsettled all night after 10:00 PM - just when I turned the light out to go to sleep 😢 He had been snoring away from 8:00-10:00. I put a nightlight on so I could see his movements, making sure he didn’t try to get off the mattress (which is on the floor, no jumping.) He took over the entire full size bed and I was not going to move him. I believe it is the Trazadone. If I remember correctly he acted funny on it last time too. After a few days I no longer gave it to him. This morning I gave him a half dose to see how he handles it. We finally got up at 4:45 this AM to go out and potty. He drug me through the woods and I really thought he was going to p**p, but no luck. Not uncommon due to surgery. His nose was going 100 miles per hour sniffing out the deer, bunnies, squirrels and raccoons. Well, we thought it was a great idea to teach our dog to go potty in the woods 🤣🤣🤣
He happily ate breakfast and is currently enjoying his frozen marrow bone, his normal Saturday treat. Outside he toe touches but inside he still prefers to hop around on three legs. I hate to see him struggle to lay down but he figures it out. Swelling remains minimal - hoping it stays that way. Massage helps break it up and I have been using Arnica gel for bruising (which was bad last time) and swelling (which didn’t last long last time). Dave Schaeffer took him out while I was out running my weekend errands and Deacon was excited, thought he was going for a walk. Sorry big man, not until you have the sutures out on the 10th. Then we can go for a few 5 minute walks.
