Case Study - Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex in Horses treated with SALT THERAPY..

The vet did diagnose this and advised that it may need to be removed in winter. However, it looks like we have saved her from having this done :)

Equine eosinophilic granuloma (also called eosinophilic granuloma with collagen degeneration, nodular necrobiosis of collagen, or collagenolytic granuloma) is the most common nodular skin disease in horses.

Treatment most often involves relatively high doses of corticosteroids given by mouth or injection. Persistent lesions can be injected with more potent forms of corticosteroids. Antibiotics can also be helpful in controlling secondary infection related to foreign body reactions. Occasionally surgical removal is needed for calcified lesions.

Young Teddy is just getting used to the concept of Lunging so we didn't want to miss today's session. But because of the heat we changed the session to a low-cardio higher strength and proprioception pole work session.

This type of session can be adapted to suit any horse at any level of work!

🌟 Humfrey update - back on board! 😁 🌟

Humfrey went back to see Marco at Pool House Equine Clinic today for another post surgery (kissing spine) review.

After trotting him up, and seeing him lunge on both hard and soft, he was looking fab so it was decided to see how he looked under saddle!

Humfrey hasn't been sat on for roughly 16 weeks, and has spent most of the last 2 weeks on two legs as he's been desperate to show us how well he is feeling. We weren't entirely sure how this step would go!

We didn't need to worry! Humfrey was so happy to have his mum Sharon back on board and he didn't put a foot out of place whilst having a little walk and trot!

I think his little face says it all! 💕

Not fully discharged yet, back again in 4 weeks after a graduall increase in ridden work.

Ava says her sports massage made her feel amazing this morning!

After a big step up in work as Ava begins her new career from racing into eventing, today's massage relieved all of her muscle tension, increased her circulation, and will help towards increasing her performance as she continues with her training!

Ava, and her owner Sarah, are also a coaching clients with me (Lizzie Walsh Equestrian- BHS APC, Rider & Equine Sports Massage Therapist), and will be joining me for a 6/8 week "Personal Training" programme to help Ava develop that little bit of extra strength over the summer before looking at competing at arena eventing through the autumn. The programme will consist of ridden exercises, groundwork, and hacking.

How it works:
A brief outline on how the salt therapy works.�The system we have allows the microscopic particles of salt to be dispersed into the air, the tiny particles are inhaled into the airways & deep into the lungs aiding mucus release & reducing inflammation within the airways allowing these to widen allowing for easier breathing. This is especially beneficial for lower & upper respiratory problems including COPD/RAO and coughing which can be caused by allergies & infection. We have found that even with a ‘pick me up’ session, stamina and endurance are increased and performance much improved.
Also during therapy the particles of salt covers the skin, (your horse will be rug free during therapy) this being the largest organ of elimination, the skin naturally absorbs the salt enabling it to assist with alleviating skin issues such as sweet itch, ringworm, general allergies and because this reduces inflammation and reduces the aggravated areas where rubbing and itching has taken place hence your horse will feel less stressed, less moody and feel much calmer in himself & new hair regrowth will occur where rub marks have been.
During the salt therapy sessions you may see signs that the micro particles are reaching down into the airways by seeing discharge/drip from one or both nostrils, this may be green or yellowish, this could be infection and white discharge could be caused through allergies such as pollen/dust/hay/a multitude of things. A clear drip is healthy and this can be nice to see too. We have found that horses find salt therapy relaxing and they seem to look forward to their follow sessions (if required).

How many sessions:
Skin – Depending on the severity of the skin issue we recommend an initial cleanse of 3 x 20 minute sessions over 3 consecutive days, for deep set skin issues 5 consecutive days and monitor the results, more sessions may be required followed by top ups throughout the year. We have found with the improved circulation within the skin and a feeling of well-being inside a glossy coat will show through too.

Respiratory – With respiratory issues again it would be the initial cleanse of 3 consecutive days and monitor the progress of the horse.

Top ups – It would be advised to have seasonal or periodic top ups depending on condition of your horse, this will be discussed during the therapy session.

Pick me ups – ‘A pick me up’ is designed to give your horse a bit of a boost in his step by allowing the salt therapy to open up the airways and cleanse his respiratory system. This is a one x 20 minute session (after completing the initial 3 x 20 minute sessions at another time) this can be carried out before or after an event or just for the well-being factor if you believe your horse ‘isn’t quite right in himself’
We never allow more than one salt therapy session in 24hrs and this should never be tried even if you think it could produce faster results.

🌟 Humpfrey Update! 🌟

It's been a little while since I've posted a Humpfrey update, sorry! Time has been running away with me! 🤦‍♀️

Humpfrey's owner Sharon has been tirelessly working through his Rehab; stretches, mobilisation exercises, inhand polework, inhand hacking, longreining, etc.

Today we progressed again and reintroduced the saddle to Humpfrey's back! This was a step we were a little apprehensive about but he's a trooper! 💪 He found it a little more tiring with the extra weight so he will continue to be built up slowly, there is absolutely no rush to get back on board, we want him as ready as he possibly can be!

Next vet review is in June so we will keep chipping away until then!

Kinesiology Taping application to support the back muscles during rehabilitation for Kissing Spine (KS)

The Eagle eyed among you will recognise this horse as my own horse, Jaffa 😔

Jaffa was diagnosed 2 weeks ago with mild KS, not requiring surgery but being treated with Shockwave Therapy, therapeutic meds, Bodywork, and a ground work rehabilitation programme to increase his core and back strength.

His prognosis is fab! We should be able to do everything we planned to (eventing), just a little delayed!

Another beautiful boy beginning his journey with Staffordshire Equine Therapy and Rehabilitation! This was JJ's second session with me on the long reins and we introduced two easy poles to encourage him to concentrate on his work and begin to further engage his core and lift and strengthen his back! We are also addressing JJ's diet to help him lose the few extra Kg's he's carrying and to help to curb some of his "sharp" behaviour. I have left his owner Nat with homework to complete between now and our next session in a few weeks time; in hand work, long reining, and hill work!
