Yesterday, I found one of my best chickens killed by something.
Today while eating breakfast I noticed the group freaking out...
A sharp shinned hawk had returned and was feasting on a other one of my poor birds.
While I have to say it was impressive standing up to the hawk and watching it try to guard its prize as I contemplated grabbing it....I'm pretty devastated to lose another good chicken. Let alone to watch it suffer this time.
This crap sucks...
So today I'm literally camped out in the pen while I sent the mom off to get deterrents.
I'm thankful the weather atleast feels extremely nice today.

Fuzz babies are all tucked in for the night.
Duckling have destroyed their cage in less than an hr.
Chicks seem to actually like the cat..

One more for the night.
I will never tire of the duck parade coming to see what's for dinner.

With the weather cooling down 2° I'm 2% more motivated to get stuff done around here.
A portable duckling run, a coop within a coop for my baby bantams, and a waste free water system for inside the coop.
Note the nest box is not fancy, but the girls never used the fancy one anyways 🤷‍♀️.

I have bruises from Bella's bill all over my wrists.
So, I guess these two are officially co parenting the eggs.
When they hatch, I'm going to have to do my best to separate them. I don't envision muscovey vs game hen turning out very well.

Welcome, Nymphadora Tonks!
Poor girl was found at a wild pond with with injured wing.
Hopefully all of us know it's never a good idea to release domestic ducks into the wild.
"Wild" even includes areas such a public ponds that are frequented by people.
For one reason, most of them are unable to fly.
One can argue all they want about them being able to defend themselves, but what happens most often is once the cute little duckling become a loud, stinky mess, they are dumped.
They don't magically know how to hunt and survive on their own.
Lastly, domestic ducks breeding with wild ducks causes a huge range of genetic issues in the wild population.
Little Tonks will be quarantined from the rest of the flock as she settles in.
We are so happy to have this sweet girl here!

We've been quiet on social media recently, but things are never quiet on the homestead.
We SURVIVED a bout of covid last week! Never would I ever have thought I'd still have to be lifting 50lb bags of feed with a raging fever.
All is good now, as if it never happened.
So our small update today is that, through all the sad loss we had recently, there is new life in 4 chicken eggs again ❤
Fingers crossed for these little ones!

An update:
The real life of homesteading..
We're still kicking. Barely...
Things have been rough recently.
A few weeks ago we lost sweet nugget to a sudden illness.
I had gone out of town and just pulled up to my favorite place in South Dakota when I got the news.
He was loved by many and is already greatly missed.
Losing the 3 chicks added to that heartbreak.
Ontop of THAT, while rain is a good thing, it hass caused flooding in the run, excessive mud, flies, and a leaky roof, which has caused my chickens to become wormy.
Naturally with all this going on, we've gone down to barely 1 egg a week.
Please keep us in your thoughts in prayers.
I didn't expect this to be some Disney princess dream, but this is all very hard to deal with as a single person working 3 jobs, and still barely making enough, let alone having the time, energy and resources to fix these problems.
It is not a fun feeling when something you love becomes a daily stress 😞

I guess I knew it was inevitable...
It makes sense as to where my eggs have been going...
But now, we are down to 3 of the hatched chicks 😔
Sad day for us..
Now we (meaning me. Since I an the only one able to handle or even look at snakes) will controversially relocate this jerk to a new forest. Yes forest. Not snake heaven.
Cannot punish him for doing what he was made to do.
Black rat snakes are friends, otherwise. They eat venomous snakes and other pests.

You do everything you can to keep them cool in this weather, and they still find ways to almost die on you.
Poor Narcissa Malfoy got herself trapped under an empty water bucket for the few minutes I was inside.
Thankfully, She is recovering well in her cool spa with electryte water and frozen treats.
I was just thinking to myself this morning how she has been the one that has opened up to me more and allows me to let her now as she begs for treats. Bellatrix is still a menace. How name appropriate.

Mama hen makes these adorable noises to let her babies know she's found food for them.
She also steals grapes from them...
Apparently the little one wants us to see the giant blueberry it found.

Born in a severe thunderstorm too. I believe we'll be naming them after some vikings or god's of thunder/lighting. They are Ragnar's children, after all.

Just a few minutes after, we have another little one!
Welcome, Itty!
(See the theme Im going for?)
I know this is a regular occurrence for some, especially chicken farmers.. but it's my first time and I am beyond thrilled to see this happening successfully.

Today on little quack shack:
Eenie, Mimi, and Minie got their steps in for the day and managed to scare the p**p out of an unsuspecting hen.
We tacked up a shabby shade screen to somewhat help with the horrible temperatures coming up this week and next.
We are also getting a misting system soon that I'll plan to turn on atleast 3x a day a day for the little boogers.
They have good shade in the back of the run and loveee hanging out underneath the coop, but this gives their water/fee area much more relief.
Another few heat busters we try to implement:
Frozen treats in the water.
Diatomaceous earth dust baths.
And Dorothee gets special "soaks" in the shallow ponds because I worry she hasn't hasn't able to find water on her own.
We may even run the box fan during the day if they don't seem happy enough.
Only the best... on a budget... for my birbs.

Beautiful newbies settling right in.
That is.... when Draco isn't around to bother them...

Good morning to Dorothee the blind!
She provides me with gigantic, beautiful brown eggs, and has a baby on the way!! We are thrilled to have her here.

Went to pick up ducks and ended up carrying these three freebies home.
Welcome to the quack shack, little dudes.
I have no idea what I'm doing and I'm terrified 🙃
But all settled in with a bag of chick starter I already had. Relying on our natural heat as they were already accustomed to. Just hoping they take to the water set up well.
Picture of the new ducks to come later when they aren't as terrified by the sight of me.

My unexpected contributer to the homestead.
Not rats...FLIES!!
Each year I dread them. Adhd person's nightmare when it comes to sensory overload triggers.
This year, with the barriers of muscovey ducks, and a screen door, Oliver tracks down and... disposes of... any flies that make it inside.
That'll do Ollie. That'll do.

They say that our own cravings often signify a nutrient we're lacking.
Recently, I've noticed one of my ducks has laid eggs with rubbery shells.
Since we're all about being resourceful here, I ask my returning customers to save the eggshells they use from my girls.
In they go into Narcissa and Bellatrixie's special kennel to provide them extra calcium throughout the day.
I provide Narcissa and Bella with their own kennel space at night. This provides them with much needed time away from their overzealous boyfriend. 😒 Draco🙄...
It also gives them a place to eat their own specialized duck food, and have clean water throughout the night.

One of the many things that has stuck with me from my years at the zoo, is the use as simple limbs for enrichment. Not only my own for the rooster or broody hens to tear at, but ones that drop into the yard during storms.
As long as they aren't toxic, in they go to provide a fun way of receiving a nutritious treat, shade, and then either extra perching or Firewood once the leaves have been stripped.
We're all about that cheap cheap here.

This is how you deal with naughty roosters.

A little white game hen of mine has been mysteriously dissapearing and reappearing the past several days.
Today, Nory chased her out from under a random pile of tin and storage bins. She has been sitting on EIGHT completely FERTILE eggs!!!
So I gave them to this grumpy broody girl.
This is an exciting step in the journey!!

Today we are at a bittersweet turning point for my little homestead.
I've had the absolute joy, with PLENTY of stress in caring for these two the past year.
From waking up to crashes on the porch as they've escaped, to venturing out at 4am in the middle of ice, thunder, and wind storms, just to hang out with them and make sure they're OK.
Bringing smiles to people as I took them on walks, and having screaming contests with them through open windows.
Now, God has opened up the door for someone new to love them as much as I do. I will never, never forget these little brats. And I will forever be thankful to their sweet new owner for opening her heart to them.
