I love getting mail at any time of year, and for the past few years have handwritten and mailed, hundreds of holiday cards. This year, in lieu of cards, I have decided to donate to some local charities instead, in the hopes of spreading positivity even further. Donations will be made in memory of dogs who were close to us.

ElderDog Canada - "ElderDog Canada is a national, registered charitable organization dedicated to ageing people, ageing dogs, and the important connection they enjoy."

SafePet Ontario - "SafePet Ontario helps people escape violence by providing a safe haven for the animals they love."

Prince Edward Learning Centre - "PELC supports individuals in Prince Edward County to reach their learning goals by providing programs that increase literacy and essential skills, and offer educational and employment upgrading and training."

We are also participating in the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary’s Festival of Trees with a "tree" made up of products and services from local pet businesses!

We'll be sharing more about these organizations in the coming weeks.

it's coughing, sniffling, sneezing cold season...

A kind request from the Fearless Tails team, if you or someone in your household is feeling sick or under the weather, please let us know before your session (ideally by text or email), so that we can make decisions that best keep us, all our clients and families healthy.

This might mean masking, switching to virtual or rescheduling your session, whatever is most appropriate for the situation.

Thank you in advance for understanding!

Is your puppy 7 - 12 months old?

Have you noticed they don't quite listen the same way they did when they were younger?

Maybe they're not as comfortable with some things that were "totally fine" when they were 4 months old.

This is normal! Your dog is going through a developmental stage, where their brain, senses and bodies are going through incredible changes to grow into the adult they will become around 2 years old (earlier in some breeds).

Because of these changes, your dog is more able to process the world around them - and react in response to those stimulus. People tend to call it being distracted or stubborn.

BUT that doesn't mean you should let it go as a 'phase'. Working with your dog's new found senses and independence is so important.

Join us for 5 weeks of classes to bolster your teen dog's focus, connection and life skills, while learning more about how to avoid the pitfalls of canine adolescence.

Anyone else play this game regularly now? You watch them go… Pinpoint the spot in your mind, 3 steps from the lowest branch on the 5th tree to your right, where the orange leaf meets the patch of scrappy grass… You walk over to the spot…And then it’s 5 minutes of is it 🍁🍂 or 💩💩 until you find it. 😂🙄anyone else?

My favourite thing about small business week is getting to know the human stories, the owner’s dreams that fuel them to take a leap and to keep on going.

Growing up, I thought I wanted to be a vet but quickly learned in biology dissection lab, that vet medicine was not for me. As I got older, teaching and coaching people emerged as another strength, for 23 years my career was in training, adult education and learning design.

I was also constantly teaching my pets things - tricks for rabbits and gerbils, obstacle courses for turtles, and I was always a dog magnet everywhere I went. Dog training soon became a passion. I took every opportunity over the years to learn from some of the best animal trainers, proofing my skills, receiving referrals from friends and word of mouth; and those referrals were happy and told more people.

I pondered starting a business over the decades, but thought I didn’t know enough, who was I be a dog trainer for real? As I got older that dream grew, but so did the fear of losing a stable, comfortable career that I enjoyed, and everything that comes with it.

And then almost 5 years ago, I took a step. It still took nearly 8 months to officially tell people that Fearless Tails existed. It felt both exhilarating and terrifying.

When I hear “so you play with dogs all day?” I cringe a little… ok, I cringe a lot. Supporting clients, changing perceptions, educating to keep people and dogs safe, running the endless the facets of business, trying to promote humane training when others offer a quick fix, it’s all consuming.

But when people light up because something they did with me made life with their dog easier, safer more enjoyable, and made their dog happier, more confident, more resilient, less reactive; that is the fuel to the fire that keeps me going. To support a family through heartbreaking decisions to rehome or release their dog through behavioural euthanasia, that is a trust I’m honoured to carry.

It’s been an incredible journey since I first imagined what Fearless Tails could be. One that would be impossible without all the people who have supported me, my dream and this small business along the way.

THANK YOU.

Do you ever feel like your dog “isn’t getting it” when you’re training? You’ve done this so many times and yet it’s still not working.

It can be super frustrating when that happens! Here’s 4 things to do when you’re feeling stuck.

1. Remember that learning is not linear, regressions and slow downs are normal.
2. Stop the training session - maybe for a day, maybe a week! yup, take a break.
3. Do something that fills your cup, then fill your dog’s cup. No sneaky training.
4. Focus on what they can do and adjust your training plan from a point of success.

For Adoption: BUTTERS

Born 1/1/2024
Cockapoo

Butters is a sweet, loving, high energy puppy. He likes playing with his toys, going for walks (two a day is great!), and spending some time outside during the day. He does need to spend some time working on his sharing skills and learning not to jump up on people as a way of saying hello- typical puppy things.

He loves people and would do best with someone who is not a first time dog owner and who practices positive reinforcement training.

Working from home or being home a lot of the time would be ideal- he definitely needs time to get used to being home alone. He should also be in a home without young children, although older kids who have experience with dogs would be okay.

The adopting family/individual should be aware that Butters has a bite history. He has bitten when handled roughly during a boarding stay (NOT with Fearless Tails), and when he is fearful or anxious. Butters needs help - not punishment.

Fearless Tails is donating 2 training sessions with the adoption of Butters.

Contact me (Tasha) directly if interested.

FROM 4MINS TO 30MINS! 🎉

I couldn’t let the weekend start without celebrating Gillian and Hawkeye’s fantastic achievement this Thursday.

A previous attempt to solve Hawkeye’s separation anxiety with a trainer backfired when they were told to enforce use of a crate. Hawkeye panicked and chipped a tooth in his attempts to escape. It was traumatic. They stopped and had not left him alone in years.

I’m so glad they took the plunge to try again after meeting me earlier this year, trusting a trainer is not easy if you’ve had bad experiences.

Here we are after several months of no stress, no confinement, no crate, no panic, humane training.

30 minutes and counting!
We’re on track towards gaining the freedom to be able to go out, run an errand, visit a pub; all while Hawkeye snoozes away.

Congratulations Gillian & Hawkeye!

Q: What’s the Most Frequent Issue I Get Contacted To Help With

A: I primarily get contacted to help with dogs that have big, loud, intense feelings that their guardians need help understanding. They’re also my favourite types of behaviour cases - dogs that need a little bit of support to truly thrive.

If you have a barky, lungey dog and would like to hear more about how to help them, DM me with "Reactive Dog", and I'll send you the link to my free 3 part course on Taming Your Dog's Reactivity.

Have you ever been uncomfortable? Didn't enjoy some people at work, or a social situation? Wanted to take some time to process information before having to answer or perform some task?
It's normal to have those feelings, and normal to expect others to have those feelings. We hope for support when we feel that way, and we try to be understanding when friends or family need similar support.

So why do we hold dogs to a different standard?
Why are we so quick to label them as defiant, stubborn, lazy, difficult, dramatic?

Why do we expect them to be comfortable in every situation, tolerate being touched by everyone at any time, get frustrated if they don't get along with every one or every dog they meet. And how dare they communicate discomfort... in the only way they know how?

It doesn't have to be a struggle. Seeking to understand the function behind their actions (which is not the same thing as judging or labelling) brings whole new lens to your dog's actions AND helps improve behaviour. Our dogs deserve Training with Compassion!
