Sweep is an 8 year old Bedlington Terrier who was referred to visiting dental, oral and maxillofacial surgeon, professor Alex Smithson, as he had a non-healing wound on his chin, that was identified to be a dental issue from a CT scan.

Upon further investigation it was found that he had worn teeth, particularly his canines due to carrying and chewing tennis balls.

Some teeth had repaired themselves by laying tertiary dentine which formed over time, usually due to wear.
Unfortunately three of the canines have pulp exposure which had gone necrotic (as seen in the photos as dark black dots in the centre of the teeth).

In one of the teeth bacteria had tracked down to the root and formed an abscess which had burst out causing the wound on the chin.

These three canines had to be extracted by Professor Smithson to prevent further issues and to help with the healing of the abscess.
We often see worn teeth in dogs who like chewing tennis balls due to their abrasive surface.

Our highly experienced orthopaedic team are here to support local practices when referring their patients for a wide range of conditions, for example Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomies (TPLO).

To help with estimating costs for pet owners we have package prices for some of our regularly performed surgeries - TPLO prices are detailed below:

Alfie, a 10kg border terrier was referred to us after he suffered a cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) in his right stifle. CCLR is the most common cause of hind limb lameness in dogs.

The ligament often fails due to a degenerative process, where it gets progressively weaker before it eventually snaps. This can be treated in multiple ways, however surgery is often necessary.
The tibial plateau levelling osteotomy procedures appear to be superior in most cases, based on the current available evidence.

Here, Alfie underwent a Cranial Closing Wedge Ostectomy stabilised with a locking compression plate. He is currently several weeks through his recovery and moving around well on his leg again. 🦴

Rollo, an 8 month old (MN) British Shorthair weighing 2.7 kg, came to see Alex Wilson, one of our internal medicine vets.

Rollo had a non-regenerative anaemia and high globulin levels on external blood tests. On an ultrasound scan Alex saw a small amount of free fluid and a large mass mid abdomen, which was assumed to be a lymph node. Fine needle aspirates were taken to investigate the mass further.
Due to the clinical exam, blood results and aspirate results, we were suspicious of Lymphoma or FIP.

Rollo had an exploratory laparotomy performed by our soft tissue surgical team, to take further samples of the mass and free fluid, which confirmed our suspicions.
Rollo was admitted to our hospital so that we could administer the first three doses of Remdesivir as an injection.

Rollo did very well and went home on oral medication. After 10 days of treatment, his owner reported he was much more playful and was eating very well in comparison to before his diagnosis.

He had a repeat ultrasound scan and the mass could no longer be seen and at 3-4 months, after he had finished his course of treatment, he now weighed 4.2 kg. Repeat blood tests showed he was no longer anaemic and his globulin levels were normal.

Willow presented acutely lame after jumping down off a dry-stone wall whilst out walking.
She was rested at home for 24 hours with no improvement, so was taken to see the vet who prescribed anti inflammatory medication and physiotherapy.

Willow started both straight away, whilst also having massage therapy alongside laser therapy to her right shoulder region. It is understood that she injured her biceps tendon.

Within two weeks she had improved greatly and was able to start some hydrotherapy to strengthen the muscles and build her fitness back up whilst the water provided hydrostatic pressure aiding any inflammation still in the area and the warmth soothing her muscles and joints.

Blu had spinal surgery early October 2023, after presenting with an acute onset of paraparesis and severe spinal pain. An MRI scan confirmed a nerve root compression at T11-T12 associated with a disc extrusion.

Our Orthopaedic vet performed a hemilaminectomy at T11-T12 where the extruded disc was removed and compression relieved.

Blu began hydrotherapy treatment with our physiotherapy team to help with rehabilitation. Four weeks post-op and he has been progressing nicely, as shown in the video below.

Penny had a 2-month period of lameness prior to her appointment with our orthopaedic surgeon, Kerry. There had been no trauma seen and there had also been no improvement with the previous pain relief medications prescribed.

A clinical examination demonstrated she had reduced flexion of both elbows (especially the right) and discomfort upon extension of both elbows. Swelling was noted on both elbows suggesting a problem with these joints.

A general anaesthetic and CT scan were performed following the appointment in order to determine the best course of action. The scan showed Penny had left and right medial coronoid disease (painful elbows) and the orthopaedic surgeon requested she be scheduled in the next couple of weeks for a general anaesthetic and bilateral elbow arthroscopy (keyhole surgery).

This is minimally invasive surgery whereby a small camera attached to a monitor is inserted directly into the elbow joint; the surgeon can see the affected areas and insert specialised instruments within the joint to treat these as necessary.

This disease is painful, is unfortunately not curable but can be treated. Often any patients are very lame when they are seen; it tends to affect large breed dogs and leads to early arthritis.
With surgery Penny’s quality of life can certainly be improved and we perform lots of elbow arthroscopies here at the hospital.

Our orthopaedic team worked together to look after Penny. During the procedure the surgeon performed a sub-total coronoidectomy where areas of dead bone were removed. Following surgery Penny spent the night in our hospital, she recovered very well and went home the following day.

Penny was weight bearing on both front legs immediately following her surgery and continued to do well at home. At her 1 week post op check the small wounds had healed and she was walking very well. Her exercise will be restricted for the next few weeks with a gradual increase until she can resume normal activity.

Otis came in to see us following an evening of repeated sickness and lack of appetite. He was also lethargic and uncomfortable, plus whenever he drank water, he vomited it back up. ⚠️

Our soft tissue surgeon, Justyna, suspected a foreign body, so an ultrasound was performed. Her suspicions were confirmed, and the foreign body was localised. After discussing with Otis' owner, it was decided that Justyna would perform an exploratory laparotomy to remove what was obstructing the small intestine.
The offending object was a sock that Otis had ingested 🧦🧦

Otis was discharged and will see his normal, first-opinion vet for post-operative checks. 💜☺️

**Ultrasound Scan Only Referrals**

This service is being led by our new referral vet Georgiana who has a certificate in diagnostic imaging.

We are able to accept referrals for full abdominal ultrasound scans, including assessment of the prostate/testes/adrenal glands/pancreas/biliary tract/cancer staging and ultrasound guided FNAs.

This is a scan only service and the referring vet will retain control of the case and owner communications re: treatment etc.

The pet will be admitted and discharged by an RVN on the day.

Georgiana and other ultrasonographers will not liaise with the client directly unless findings on the day dictate this and the referring vet will also be kept suitably informed should this occur.

Any cases you wish to refer for advice and medical management should be directed to our internal medicine team in the normal way for a full referral.
