Do you have a pet? Do you consider them as a part of your family? If you have a cat you are most likely consider your pet as a member of family. This manifests in several ways such as talking to your pet in full sentences as if they can understand you. Although, some cats do respond… unfortunately...

Your cat wants to go outside?
So…. Your cat wants to go outside and sometimes do not come back home for the night? Not sure what to do? Is it safe for the cat to stay outside especially when it is cold?
Letting your cat outside is risky. There are numerous dangers outside such as passing cars, picking fights with other cats over a territory, potentially getting wounded and infected by various illnesses. If your cat is not neutered, they can end up contributing to a rapidly growing feral cat population, and we don’t want to do that! Naturally, there are steps we, as cat owners, can take to prevent or minimize the risks. If you want to let your cat outside ask your vet about additional vaccination which could prevent most spread illnesses in felines, make sure not to skip general check-up and have your cat neutered.
How about the weather in winter? Felines are well adapted to cold but they are not immune to temperatures that dip below freezing, which put them at risk of getting frostbite and hypothermia. At these weather condition a feline would naturally seek out a hiding spot. A place that is warm and could shelter them from the cold. If you are worried about your cat not coming back home in winter when temperatures are low a god idea would be to build a shelter in your back yard. Cat house should be large enough for a cat to be able to turn around and have an elevated structure (prevents cold propagating through the floor). To make it extra comfortable add a cat bed to the housing. Stuffed bed will help to capture and maintain natural body heat.
Without a safe shelter cat can end up looking for a hiding spot under a hood of a car. Engine can maintain high temperature for hours after last use which would attract your pet. If a car is turned on while cat is present it can severely injure your pet.
The best way to protect your cat is to keep it indoors, but if your cat thrives being outside build/buy cat house and place a warm cat bed inside. This shelter will become your pet’s natural go to place at night time.

Owning a cat is good for women but not for men????

Affects of pet ownership have been studied for more than three decades. A number of research papers suggested there is a general trend of pet owners having a better mental health state when compared to their counter parts (none pet owners). A recent socio-demographic study of 2291 individuals living in United States has been conducted examining influence of pets on their owners.
Data analysis showed that unmarried women who live with a pet have least amount of depressive symptoms while men who live with a pet have the most. This suggest that women greatly benefit from a pet companionship while men do not.

12/10/2019

Declawing is an inhumane, unnecessary procedure that has many alternatives. It is never in the cat’s best interest. Simply put it’s “Training vs. Amputation”.

Training a cat to use the proper scratching surfaces is really simple. Destructive scratching problems are 100% preventable and correctable. Providing the cat with suitable scratching areas (posts) to satisfy this instinctive behavior and encouraging the use of a proper place is generally all that is required.

The term “declawing” makes people think only the claw is removed, but a more appropriate description would be amputation/mutilation. Declawing fits the dictionary definition of mutilation to a tee. Words such as deform, disfigure, disjoint, and dismember all apply to this surgery. It doesn’t matter how the procedure is preformed, scapula, guillotine or laser.

Declawing is actually multiple amputations comparable to the removal of human fingertips at the first knuckle. Sensory and motor nerves are cut, damaged, and destroyed. Recovery from the surgery is a slow and a painful process. The pain from declawing is life long and normal cat behaviors are forever gone. This procedure keeps our cats from enjoying pain free things such as walking, running, springing, climbing, and stretching. This crippling procedure keeps our cats from a life of fun energetic normal cat behavior.

This cruel procedure is evident when the cat is waking up from the from anesthesia following the brutal surgery, it results in cats bouncing off the walls of the recovery cage because of the excruciating pain. Some cats that are more stoic huddle in the corner of the recovery cage, immobilized in a state of helplessness, by the overwhelming pain. Much different than routine recoveries such as from neutering or spaying surgeries, which are fairly peaceful when over.

Cat parents who elect to have their cats paws declawed generally do so with the belief that they will never have to deal with fabric damage due to destructive scratching problems or children being scratched. They don’t realize exactly what the process is. However, paw sensitivity (pain) resulting from the declaw operation may result in bitting, destructive chewing and litter box avoidance. Another set of other problems have developed from this procedure, now what do you do? You have your beloved cat crippled for life and now unable to preform necessary natural cat instinctual behaviors. It hurts to walk on the litter, they can’t get a good stretch and the pain is causing them to bite out at the fact when they try to use their claws there is only PAIN.

Some cats after a declaw procedure can become nervous and defensive and display an undesirable temperament or behavior change. Usually when this happens the person responsible for the declawing would rather take the cat to a pound or shelter or have it euthanized by their veterinarian. Even worse, turn them out into the streets, totally defenseless and in pain. Not even trying to understand what they have done to their cat for them to behave this way. It’s a NO win for the cat!

While declawing is a popular and lucrative practice in the United States, it is not practiced in European countries. It is, in fact, against the law, in many countries including England, Germany, and Switzerland.

12/10/2019

It can happen in only a instant. Feline companions who have been buddies for years can suddenly view each other as “the enemy” and serious fighting can follow. Just like they don’t even know each other at all. An excellent explanation for this strange behavior can be caused by a number of triggers.

When two cats in the household who have gotten along well togethTwo cat sitting on the window siller suddenly become aggressive toward each other, the problem is generally fear-induced aggression. Neither of the cats seeks the other out, but if they run into each other, both will act startled and attack. Usually this problem begins “by mistake” or by accident. For example, a cat “A” may be sitting in a window as an outside cat walks by. Cat “B” sees the outside cat and rushes toward the window to attack it. Unfortunately, Cat “A” happens to be in the way and sees cat “B” aggressively charging toward it. Cat “A” puffs up and hisses. Cat “B” redirects its attention to cat “A” and puffs up and hisses. Then the cats attack each other. Each acts as if the other started the fight. Neither cat knows why.

Occasionally, two friendly cats may be resting when a frightening incident occurs, such as a bookshelf falling over. loud slamming of a door or even people shouting. Both cats become startled, puff up, and assume defensive postures. When they see each other in a defensive posture, they act as if the other is about to attack. Consequently, each reacts defensively, a fight ensues, and thereafter they are aggressive whenever they see each other.

In order to successfully treat this type of aggression, the cats must be separated and carefully reintroduced to each other. They must become accustomed to each other again without either cat becoming afraid or aggressive. The method for reintroducing cats is the same as the protocol for introducing a new cat into the household. Remember, don’t try to handle the cats if they are aroused or agitated or you will be the victim of redirected aggression. If necessary, throw a thick towel over one of the cats so that you can safely take them to another room.

Keep the cats in separate rooms for a few days. Then exchange rooms so that they can reacquaint themselves with each other’s scent. The door should be kept closed so that there is no interaction between the cats at this time.
After a few days of room rotation, let the cats see each other, but not have contact with each other. This can be accomplished by securely wedging or hooking the door so the cats can peek through the crack but can’t fit through the opening. Feed the cats something especially delicious on opposite sides of the door. You can also tie two small toys together with a leather shoe lace and slide it under the door so that when one cat bats at the toy, the toy on the other side of the door moves. The goal is for each cat to associate good food and good times with the presence of the other cat.
Praise the cats when they are near each other. It never helps to scold the aggressor. If either cat becomes extremely hostile or frightened, close the door and try again later.
When the cats are relaxed with the sight of one another, then it is time to open the door. Let them be together for only a few minutes at first, gradually increasing the time each day.

This process can take a few days or a few weeks depending on the personalities of the cats and the severity of their aggressive encounter. If you are patient and systematic about the reintroduction process, you will be rewarded with two cats that are, once again, purrfectly compatible.

11/10/2019

Cat enthusiasts, did you know how these elegant feline friends can enrich your life? Sure, cats are adorable when they cuddle with you, and it's so heartwarming to watch them curl up into a lazy ball on your bed. But how do they improve your health? Read this Spotlight to find out.

"The cat," wrote author Muriel Spark in A Far Cry from Kensington, "will settle down and be serene, with a serenity that passes all understanding."

"And," she writes, "the tranquility of the cat will gradually come to affect you, [...] so that all the excitable qualities that impede your concentration compose themselves and give your mind back the self-command it has lost."

"[A cat's] presence alone is enough," she says. "The effect of a cat on your concentration is remarkable, very mysterious."

Cats are often hailed as pets that can soothe and bring calm. That is, perhaps, why places such as cat cafés — where anyone can go and stroke or cuddle a cat while having a soothing drink — are so popular wherever they open.

However, aside from enthusiastic reports from cat owners about all the benefits of interacting with felines, what health and well-being benefits can we actually expect cats to bring?

In this Spotlight, we give you an overview of what scientific studies say about how cats can enrich our lives and boost our health.

'A soothing massage for the soul'
Who among us hasn't had the experience of being all set to do some business, only to fall into the deep Internet hole of cute cat videos? Such clips are so addictive, often the focus of many an hour spent procrastinating.

As research has shown, however, there is a good reason why we get hooked on cat videos: they can make us happier and help keep negative emotions at bay.

"Even if [individuals] are watching cat videos on YouTube to procrastinate or while they should be working, the emotional pay-off may actually help people take on tough tasks afterward," says study author Jessica Gall Myrick.

Moreover, a survey conducted by the Cats Protection feline charity in the United Kingdom in 2011 found that people who spend time with cats or kittens report feeling calmer and less upset.

Of the cat owners who participated in this survey, 87 percent believed that sharing their lives with a cat improved their overall well-being, while 76 percent felt that their cats helped them cope with daily stress much better.

"Sitting with a relaxed purring cat at the end of a hectic day is a soothing massage for the soul," explains Beth Skillings, a clinical veterinary officer at Cats Protection.

"Perhaps this is because the reassuring hum is generally associated with calmness and gentle communication, or perhaps it is because the frequency of the vibration is in the range that can stimulate healing."

Beth Skillings
Indeed, although we may think of many cats as aloof and lacking the empathy usually associated with dogs, felines may actually be able to understand when their owners are feeling down and react accordingly.

So suggests a study published in the journal Animal Cognition in 2015. Authors Moriah Galvan and Jennifer Vonk found that domestic cats can read humans' facial expressions to distinguish certain emotional cues, which may allow them to respond on a case-by-case basis.

Benefits for the body
Cats can also bring physical health benefits to their owners. For instance, one study that Medical News Today previously covered found that people who live with cats have a lower risk of experiencing a heart attack.

Research has shown that cats can protect you against allergies, asthma, and heart attacks.
While this may simply be because "cat people" are naturally calmer and better able to handle stress, it is quite possible that having a feline friend is soothing and reassuring, and this ultimately contributes to protecting heart health.

Another study that MNT covered argued that infants who grow up with furry pets, including cats, are less likely to develop allergies and obesity.

This, the researchers explain, may be because infants exposed to such animals had more abundant populations of two gut bacteria — Ruminococcus and Oscillospira — which appear to have protective effects.

Early exposure to cats is also associated with a lower risk of asthma in children, according to research published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology last year.

The authors believe that this is due to the fact that interaction with cats contributes to children's absorption of a type of sialic acid, which does not naturally occur in the human body but which does appear to regulate inflammatory reactions.

How cats can 'train' us to do well
Aside from the psychological and physiological benefits that they bring, it turns out that cats can also influence our behaviors and personalities and help us do better in life.

Recently, a study suggested that cats can actually contribute to a person's financial success in a completely unexpected way: by infecting them with the parasite Toxoplasma gondii.

This type of infection, known as "toxoplasmosis," does not normally have many ill effects on adults, but it has, on occasion, been tied to serious health problems in the case of small children and individuals with a weak immune system.

However, researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder have now found that T. gondii can actually make people more likely to take the sort of risks that may lead to financial gain.

According to the study, people who been exposed to this parasite are "1.4 [times] more likely to major in business and 1.7 [times] more likely to have an emphasis in 'management and entrepreneurship.'"

Cats also help improve behavior and social interaction in children who live with disorders that may affect their ability to "read" others' emotions and respond to them.

In fact, a study published earlier this year found that children with autism spectrum disorder who grow up, and bond, with kittens display better behaviors, as the cats provide valuable emotional support.

"It seems that cats in families with an [autism spectrum disorder] child often provided valuable bonding, attention, and calming affection to the child," the researchers write.

Cats' contribution to research
Finally, cats might also provide valuable contributions to medical research, since some of the health problems that affect them are very similar to those that can sometimes affect people.

Just like humans, cats can also become infected with an immunodeficiency virus: the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV).

Interestingly, recent advances in FIV research could actually help experts better understand HIV, too.

In a study published in March 2018, researchers discovered why cats with FIV might develop resistance to antiretroviral therapies, which reduce virus levels in the blood.

The authors believe that their new discoveries could actually help experts develop better HIV therapies for humans, so that therapy resistance would no longer be an issue.

Cats may be able to contribute to the greater — medical — good of mankind in other ways as well, however.

Research conducted at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, NH, argues that the parasite that can cause toxoplasmosis — T. gondii — could be used to create a vaccine against various aggressive types of cancer, including melanoma and ovarian cancer.

In their study, the researchers modified T. gondii to allow it to stimulate the human body's natural immune response, focusing it on attacking cancer cells.

The mutant version of the cat-borne parasite, the authors report, "is the microscopic, but super strong, hero that catches [aggressive cancers], halts their progression, and shrinks them until they disappear."

So, the next time you turn your nose up when taking your used cat litter to the trash, just take a moment to consider that this isn't just p**p — it may actually hold the key to the next big breakthrough in clinical research.
