When a dog shows aggression I’ve had many people say to me, “I thought we were friends”. A dog acting aggressively doesn’t always mean that dog dislikes the person/dog. It means they don’t know how to cope in that second.

To help them feel better in the future it takes work. Management can help set them up for success. But it will be a process of building trust in the relationship, trust in the work, and then maintenance to keep reminding them how to continue handling that situation in the future. Even then, it might just not be a good environment for that learner. Behavior does not get fixed.

If you hear of someone dealing with an aggressive dog, please be kind. There are many possible outcomes in these situations. Rehoming can be a possible solution. And it’s not your place to tell anyone they are a bad person for making the decision they make.

Behavior is complicated. But it can be easier to decide what choice to make when you’re surrounded by kindness and support (this includes your inner dialogue). Living can be really difficult sometimes. And NOBODY has the authority to tell you what is right for you, especially when it comes to how you live your own life.

Camille Asmer and I have started a podcast, and I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack announcing it right now!

So, there are a few podcasts I listen to that fill my cup and give me energy to tackle the day (We Can Do Hard Things and Cog Dog Radio to name a few....). We really want to bring more of that to the dog community, while trying to avoid the typical arguments about labels and acronyms.

We're still in the beginning stages of figuring out the fine print of publishing a podcast. But for those that listen to your podcasts on YouTube, we hope you enjoy:

Behavior is complicated! In this episode, Camille and Kelly dive into many of the different components they consider when working through training plans.

A client inspired me to prepare some weekly enrichment before leaving for the day! Looking forward to relaxing with a pint while Pluto enjoys a frozen kong, when I get home from the work day!

Whether I’m training with a client who’s worked with their dog every day since our last session or training with a client who has only worked with their dog once, I’ve been hearing the same thing. “I know I haven’t done enough since we last met.”

You. Are. Enough. We are all trying our best with our pups. Everyone and their mom want to explain how to raise dogs “better”. You define what is better for you and your dog, nobody else! (And here is Pluto crunching on an apple for those who just came here for the cute dog videos 🤪)

Have you thought about what you’re doing with your pups during Halloween? There’s still enough time to solidify some of your management strategies, so the only thing you’ll have to worry about is running out of candy (or drinks 😉)! Feel free to reach out if you think it would help to discuss your plans.

Photo Request for a presentation I'm putting together! I need photos of dogs sitting and waiting for treats at their cookie jar. If anyone has a free second, could you respond in the comments with this photo of their dog? TIA (I'll probably have more requests soon, if people want to show off their dogs' skills)

I feel like I can now call myself a dog trainer…I left my towel hanging and was able to cue Pluto to bring it to me without getting the foot wet. Granted my towel was slightly hairier, but the floor was dry! Next, I need to teach him to do the laundry! (I did not get a photo of him bringing my towel to me in the shower, so here is a replacement photo)

I discuss the classical/operant walk with every client. This article does an amazing job breaking it down. Thank you THRIVING CANINE!

If you were to look up the terms "Classical and Operant Conditioning" online, you'd likely get a slew of scientific terminology that may or may not make sense to you. This blog will attempt to boil it all down into simple terms with examples that are easy to relate to. Classical and Operant Conditio...

Adolescence in canines..... anyone who's owned a 6 mo to 3 year dog has probably experienced the frustrations of this age. I had a puppy who would do anything I asked, even without me asking sometimes! And then he turned ~7 mo, and it was sometimes difficult to recognize him.

During these situations, it's so easy to fall back and think "I messed up his training, I didn't expose him to enough stimuli, maybe if we had a stronger default behavior...." Pluto is just now starting to show signs of his old self, and it's the best feeling ever! While we might not be out of the thick of it (I'm not assuming anything for another year... or two), I'm thoroughly enjoying this Pluto who is able to stay in one place long enough to receive pets, actually work on a bone in public, see moving objects and choose to focus on me, and is actually able to sleep while I work on the computer!

I also know that this can be something entirely different from adolescence (once again, read "Meet Your Dog"), but as of now it looks like patience, redirecting, and listening to his choices *when it's appropriate* seems to be a working equation for us at the moment. To take a quote from Kathy Murphy - "the adolescent brain just needs to be cuddled". Part of me hated this quote, because it can be so exhausting. But seeing Pluto show maturity in situations he previously couldn't have makes all of this worth it!

Day 1 of my next board and train. Pluto has definitely met his match!

Three cheers for EARLY socialization (4-16 weeks)! These puppies were happily playing within five minutes of arriving at a NEW place, greeted and handled by NEW people, surrounded by three other NEW pups. Poppy and Louie are 14 weeks and 10 weeks old; this experience would have been very different if their owners had opted to wait until after 16 weeks old when vaccinations were complete. They very likely would have been wary and somewhat stressed, perhaps hiding from the other pups while struggling to absorb all the “newness.” We see this every day in pups that have stayed at home with few visitors and no other puppies or dogs for four months-sad and preventable. Acclimating and enjoying new places and situations is easy for the baby puppies under four months old (within their critical socialization period) and the confidence and accompanying life skills stick with them forever!
