At PatricksFragShack.com

We Understand....
We hear about it. We see it on the news. We feel the effects. Ocean temperatures are rising, getting more polluted, and becoming more acidic. Corals and Coral Colonies are dying off at an alarming rate. It is estimated that almost 90% of the coral reefs will disappear within the next 20 years.
Here at Patrick's Frag Shack, we want to do our part to help prevent that from happening. We get our corals from coral farms. Coral Farms are facilities that propagate coral - grow one piece of coral from a larger piece.

We Support....
With your help, we are able to support charities that do their part in maintaining and restoring Coral Reefs in the oceans. There are several that do phenomenal and groundbreaking work in saving and restoring our natural Coral Reefs.
The picture in the comments, is one of our "adopted" corals - a Pocillopora Verrucosa - from The Coral Gardeners (https://coralgardeners.org/).

We Do Our Part....
We try and assist multiple organizations through donations and getting the word out. Another one we here at Patrick's Frag Shack support is called the "Reef Life Foundation" (www.ReefLifeFoundation.com). They focus on research, education, and scientific studies.

We Stay Informed....
Here at Patrick's Frag Shack, we want to stay up to date and informed on the latest break throughs and trends in the home saltwater aquarium hobby. We relay that information to you, through our website. We are members of W.A.M.A.S. - Washington DC Area Marine Aquarist Society. This is a non profit educational society dedicated to the husbandry of marine life in a captive environment. Through exchanging information with one another, we share our collective knowledge on the care and propagation of these wonderful ocean animals.

Patrick's Random Tidbit !!

Did you know that some air fresheners are actually harmful to your tank?? While there are candles and oils that are saltwater safe, stay away from certain ingredients. If it has things like "Phenol", "Phenylpropyl", "Amphenol", "Monoterpene" or "Ketone" they are actually toxic to your fish! Be safe! Don't Spray!!

Patrick's Frag Shack is a new family owned business just getting started. We have many frags for the new and veteran hobbyists. We have many frags for sale, complete with care sheets for each one.

Bristle Worms -- people either love them or hate them. They are a phenomenal part of the Clean Up Crew, if kept in low numbers. Chances are you wont see them during the daylight hours, as they only come out at night. They tend to grow less than 6 inches long, but CAN grow up to 2 FEET!!! They reproduce quickly, and some are carnivores, so it's important to keep the population low.

VERY IMPORTANT - DO NOT TOUCH a bristle worm. The worms are covered with very fine bristles that will get into your skin and cause a variety of problems. Remove the unwanted pest with tweezers or a bristle worm trap.

Bristle worms have natural predators that will help eradicate the population if you want to get rid of them. Some helpful fish are Doddybacks, Halichoeres Wrasses, Maori Wrasse, Bird Wrasse, and Sunset Wrasse. Coral Banded Shrimp and Arrow Crabs also will help.

What are coral reefs??? (Borrowed from the EPA website)

Coral reef ecosystems are intricate and diverse collections of species that interact with each other and the physical environment. Coral is a class of colonial animal that is related to hydroids, jellyfish, and sea anemones.

Stony corals, a type of coral characterized by their hard skeleton, are the bedrock of the reef. Stony coral colonies are composed of hundreds of thousands of individual living polyps. Polyps are capable of drawing dissolved calcium from seawater and solidifying it into a hard mineral (calcium carbonate) structure that serves as their skeletal support. When you look at a coral colony, only the thin layer on its surface is live coral; the mass beneath is the calcium carbonate skeleton that may be decades old.

The slow growth of polyps and expansion of the hard skeletal structures build up the permanent coral reef structure over time.

Polyps of reef-building corals contain microscopic algae called zooxanthellae, which exist with the animal in a symbiotic relationship. The coral polyps (animals) provide the algae (plants) a home, and in exchange the algae provide the polyps with food they generate through photosynthesis. Because photosynthesis requires sunlight, most reef-building corals live in clear, shallow waters that are penetrated by sunlight. The algae also give a coral its color; coral polyps are actually transparent, so the color of the algae inside the polyps show through.

Coral reefs provide habitat for a large variety of marine life, including various sponges, oysters, clams, crabs, sea stars, sea urchins, and many species of fish. Coral reefs are also linked ecologically to nearby seagrass, mangrove, and mudflat communities. One of the reasons that coral reefs are so highly valued is because they serve as a center of activity for marine life.

Not all corals on the reef are stony corals.

• Hydrocorals, or fire coral, are reef-building hydroids that have a hard calcareous exoskeleton and stinging cells that can cause a burning sensation when touched.
• Octocorals, or ‘soft’ corals, include sea fans and sea whips, which grow more like fleshy plants and do not form calcium carbonate skeletal structures.
• Antipatharians, or black corals, are another type of branching ‘soft’ coral.

Some soft corals have zooxanthellae to acquire food and energy, but others, such as black corals, exist without this symbiotic relationship.

DID YOU KNOW - Bubble Algae is a nuisance algae that affects many many tanks. It is usually introduced into the tank from a new rock, or a new frag. Seeing as Bubble Algae feeds off of Nitrates and Phosphates, often water parameter tests are misleading. There are a few different types of marine life that eats Bubble Algae, such as Tangs, Rabbitfish, and Emerald Crabs. Bubble Algae spreads by spores that are disbursed when the bubble bursts. Although this is true, it is possible to eradicate bubble algae by scraping or removing it (carefully) by hand. Spores from the bubble only develop when the bubble becomes sexually mature (no way of really knowing when this happens though). Happy Reefing!!!

A coral frag is a term for a coral fragment. And that’s exactly what they are: small pieces of the original colony. It’s only when the frag reaches a standard size (typically, when it’s expanded past the original “plug”) that you stop referring to it as a “frag.”
