Burmese Python

Burmese pythons, one of the largest snakes in the world, are best known for the way they catch and eat their food. The snake uses its sharp rearward-pointing teeth to seize prey, and then coils its body around the animal, squeezing a little tighter with each exhale until the animal suffocates. Stretchy ligaments in their jaws allow them to swallow animals up to five times as wide as their head!

Burmese Python

Python bivitattus

TYPE: Reptiles

DIET: Carnivore

AVERAGE LIFE SPAN IN THE WILD: 20 to 25 years

SIZE: 16 to 23 feet

WEIGHT: Up to 200 pounds

Burmese pythons are carnivores, eating mostly small mammals and birds. But exceptionally large pythons may search for larger food items like pigs or goats. Pythons have even been known to have attacked and eaten alligators! They have poor eyesight, so instead they stalk prey using chemical receptors in their tongues and heat-sensors along their jaws.

Burmese pythons are among the largest snakes on Earth. They are capable of reaching 23 feet (7 meters) or more in length and weighing up to 200 pounds (90 kilograms) with a girth as big as a telephone pole.

When they are young, Burmese pythons will spend equal time on the ground and in the trees. But are they grow larger they tend to stay on the ground because the trees can’t hold them anymore! They are also excellent swimmers and can stay submerged up to 30 minutes. The Burmese python is an invasive species in the Florida Everglades. According to the National Park Service, tens of thousands of these snakes exist there.

Females lay clutches of up to 100 eggs, which they incubate for two to three months. To keep their eggs warm, they continually contract, or shiver, their muscles. When the baby snakes hatch they use their special egg tooth to cut their way out of their egg and the mother leaves. The newly hatched baby python will often remain inside its egg until it finishes shedding its first shedding of skin, then it will hunt for its first meal all by itself.

Chameleon

A chameleon sits motionlessly on a tree branch. Suddenly its sticky, two-foot-long tongue snaps out at 13 miles an hour, wrapping around a cricket and whipping the yummy snack back into the reptile’s mouth. Now that’s fast food dining! And the chameleon’s swift eating style is just one of its many features that’ll leave you tongue-tied.

Meller's Chameleon

Trioceros melleri

TYPE: Reptiles

DIET: Carnivore

AVERAGE LIFE SPAN IN THE WILD: 12 years

SIZE: 21 inches

WEIGHT: 14.4 ounces

COLORFUL CRITTERS

Chameleons mostly live in the rain forests and deserts of Africa. The color of their skin helps them blend in with their habitats. Chameleons that hang out in trees are usually green. Those that live in deserts are most often brown.

They often change color to warm up or cool down. (Turning darker helps warm the animals because the dark colors absorb more heat.) They also switch shades to communicate with other chameleons, using bright colors to attract potential mates or warn enemies.

So how exactly do chameleons change colors? The outer layer of their skin is see-through. Beneath that are layers of special cells filled with pigment—the substance that gives plants and animals (including you) color. To display a new color, the brain sends a message for these cells to get bigger or smaller. As this happens, pigments from different cells are released, and they mix with each other to create new skin tones. For instance, red and blue pigment may mix to make the chameleon look purple.

EYES EVERYWHERE

Over 150 species of chameleons exist, ranging from the size of your thumbnail to that of a house cat. Some species of chameleon (such as the tiger chameleon) are endangered, but others (like the Drakensberg dwarf chameleon) are not. No matter their differences, all chameleons have a prize pair of eyes. Their peepers can move in two different directions at once, giving the lizards a panoramic view of their surroundings. This eye-popping reptile really knows how to scale up the cool factor.

POISON DART FROG

Poison Dart frogs live in rainforest habitats in Central and South America. They can be found in trees, as well as under leaves and logs and rocks on the floor of the forest. Because of their size, from 1/2 to 2 inches long, they are hard to see. Poison frogs warn predators with brilliant colors and patterns. There are many species of poison frogs that can be found in every color under the sun! They prey on invertebrates, especially certain ant species, which build up really strong poisons in the frog.

Dart Frogs got their name because hunters would tip their arrows in the frog’s poisons. Sadly, because people are cutting down rainforests for farming and ranching, Poison Dart Frogs are at risk. The Blue Poison Dart Frog is the most endangered due to the pet-shop market.

Saltwater Crocodiles are the largest species of crocodile. They’re also the largest species of reptile!Saltwater Crocodiles have 66 teeth.Saltwater Crocodiles are found in India, Southeast Asia and northern Australia. Most people would be able to outrun a crocodile on land, but Saltwater Crocodiles can swim much faster than humans. You can tell the difference between a crocodile and an alligator by looking at their teeth (not too closely!) when their jaws are closed. You will be able to see teeth from both the upper and lower jaws of a crocodile sticking outside of its mouth. Only teeth growing down from the top jaw are visible when an alligator closes its mouth. (See the picture of a crocodile’s jaws further down the page.)Saltwater Crocodiles can travel over 1,000 km by sea.The East, West and South Alligator Rivers in Australia’s Northern Territory were misnamed: early explorers who saw the Saltwater Crocodiles there thought they were alligators.A Saltwater Crocodiles brain is the size of a walnut. Despite this, a Saltwater Crocodile is smarter than most other reptiles. The Saltwater Crocodile has the strongest bite of any living animal. However, the muscles that open its mouth are relatively weak.

Scientific name (green anaconda): Eunectes murinus
Family name: Boidae
Classification: Reptile
IUCN status: Data deficient
Lifespan (in wild): 10 years
Weight: Up to 227kg
Body length: 6 to 9m
Diet: Carnivore
Habitat: Swamps and rivers of tropical South America
Range:

The anaconda is a semiaquatic snake found in tropical South America. The name applies to a several snakes in the genus Eunectes, but it is commonly used to refer to one species in particular – the green anaconda.

When taking into account both weight and length, the green anaconda is the largest snake in the world, growing up to 9m long and weighing as much as 227kg. Picture it – that”s longer than six ten-year-olds lying head to foot, and heavier than all of them put together!

The green anaconda is a member of a family of snakes called constrictors. Constrictors are not venomous snakes, which means they don”t kill prey by delivering venom through a bite. Instead, constrictors wrap their bodies around their prey and squeeze until it stops breathing – yikes!

Once an anaconda has suffocated its victim, it’s time to open wide. And boy does this snake have a gob on it! Stretchy ligaments allow it to open its mouth wide enough to swallow prey whole – which could be large fish, rodents, caiman (relatives of crocodiles), wild pigs, small deer and even jaguars!

Other species of anaconda are smaller in size, and include the yellow anaconda and the dark-spotted anaconda.

Gila monsters are the largest lizards native to the United States. They get their name from Arizona's Gila River basin, where they were first discovered. Gila (pronounced hee-la) monsters are also one of only two venomous lizards in the world.
