This week, Dr. Schumann discusses some options to help keep your dogs cool when training and running tests in the summer heat! This is also good information for anyone who is planning on hunting with their dog when dove season opens next month!

One of the most asked questions we get is probably one of the most important….”What needs to be in my dog’s first aid kit?”

Dr. Schumann sat down and came up with a list of items that you should have with you when traveling with your pup. Having these on hand should help you out in a pinch if something happens to your dog while you’re at a test or hunting, until you can get them to a vet for additional care.

Please do not use any of these products without consulting a veterinarian and as always, let us know if you have any questions!

-Bandage material (rolled gauze, cotton, vet wrap, tape)
-Scissors
-Eye flush
-Eye medications (one with a steroid for irrititated and inflamed eyes), one without (for corneal scratches)
-Hydrogen peroxide
-Iodine
-Rubbing alcohol
-Antibiotics (cephalexin for skin. Metronidazole for diarrhea. Doxicycline for respiratory.)
-Anti-inflammatoire (carprophin)
-Staple gun and remover
-Styptic powder (for nails)
-Skunk off
-Benedryl
-Thermometer
-Topical Antiseptic Spray

This past week, Dr. Schumann was presented with an eighth month old lab puppy. This puppy was very lame in its right shoulder. After X-rays we’re done, it was determined that he had an OCD (Osteochondritis dissecans). This is where the cartilage has died and caused a lesion that needed to be removed.

Dr. Schumann was able to preform the necessary surgery and the pup is expected to make a full recovery!

This is a pretty cool case Dr. Schumann has been working on!!

Puppy Brother, a Jack Russel Terrier, presented a few months ago paralyzed and unable to walk. Dr. Schumann suspected a ruptured disc. To determine if he was correct and which disc was ruptured, he injected a dye into the spinal cord and took X-rays of where the dye traveled.

The first two pictures are of X-rays after the dye was injected. It’s been noted where the dye stops. That is where the disc is ruptured at and the dye in unable to continue through the spinal cord. That is what was causing the dog to be paralyzed.

The next picture is of the dog’s spine during the surgery to relieve the pressure of the ruptured disc. Part of the bone from the spine was moved in order for Dr. Schumann to access the spinal cord and alleviate the pressure from the ruptured disc.

It took several weeks for recovery, but the video in the comments shows Puppy Brother about a month after the surgery. He’s made a very good recovery and is up, walking and wagging his tail. With this much progress within a month, he will more than likely get back to normal neurologic function in his back legs.

One of the questions we got last week was about the best way to get dogs in and out of trucks and trailers. Constant jumping in and out can be hard on their bodies and picking them up is hard on the owner. A dog properly acclimated to a ramp is the best and safest option all the way around.

Thé first question we’re going to answer from our Saturday post was an easy one! It was asked who Dr. Schumann’s favorite niece is, and by far it’s Alexis Schumann, who is in her first year of studying veterinary medicine at Auburn University!

Alexis graduated from Transylvania University and was immediately accepted into the Veterinary Medicine program at Auburn. Not only is she a great student who will make a great veterinarian, she is a very kind and giving person. Whatever sector of the animal community that she chooses to pursue after graduation will be fortunate to have her!

Not only does he work on furry animals, Dr. Schumann takes care of the reptilian variety as well!

This is a four year old turtle who was sick and not doing well. It turns out he wasn’t getting all of the nutrients he needed, so a feeding tube was inserted to give him extra meals and get him back up on his feet! He’s doing very well now!
