Sheila Sanford is a community herbalist, mother of three, gardener, cook and an Ayurvedic practitioner.
Devoted to the study of horticulture for over 20 years, she has spent the last five focusing specifically on the art and practice of Herbalism. Sheila’s pursuit of horticultural studies began at Longwood Gardens, where she received a Certification of Ornamental Plants. After years of working with medicinal herbs in her own garden in the sprawling countryside of southeastern Pennsylvania, she began
studying with Dr. Paul Dugliss, founder of the New World Ayurveda School. After completing a 600-hour course on this ancient Indian system of healing, she began a two-year Herbalist Training program under David Winston, renowned herbalist, ethnobotonist, and author. Sheila is currently enrolled in the Foundations in Herbal Medicine course with Dr. Tieraona Low Dog, an internationally recognized herbal medicine expert, clinician, educator, author, and advocate for natural medicine. In a community without many natropathic resources, Sheila is building an initiative to provide preventative medicine and natural healing options, working in tandem with the strong arm of traditional western medicine. Through educational workshops, garden therapy, and individual consultations, she shares her passion for nature and herbal healing with her community. Sheila believes that we could all benefit from the time-tested and ancient knowledge of healing plants, along with traditional western medicine to achieve wellness.

Avena sativa when harvested at it’s “milky” stage, makes an effective tincture that helps the nervous system.
When you have anxiety, nervous exhaustion, irritability, have emotional reactions to minor arguments, disappointments and loud noises; or when you just “burn the candle at both ends”, a lovely tincture of milky oats is a great herbal remedy.
This beautiful harvest was a gift from Jamie Hicks, who grows Avena sativa locally as a cover crop, with no chemicals, in a field nearby. I plan to make several small batches of medicine with intention of deep gratitude for this gift and this wonderful medicine from nature.

A true pest when you are hiking and accidentally meet this plant. But, don’t hold any grudges...
The leaves 💚🌿 are a nutrient rich blood tonic that also helps heal bones, strengthen nails, hair and teeth!
I gathered the plant today to collect the seeds. I use the seeds as a tincture for degenerative kidney disease. I also use them in culinary spice blends- they are nutritive to all renal tissue.
