Repost • I wanted to share my dog’s radiographs (x-rays) so you can see what Gastric Dilatation Volvulus (GDV), more commonly called bloat, looks like. .
As you can see in the first two pictures the stomach is very distended. It can be full of air, food or liquid. Unfortunately when it gets this distended the stomach can rotate or twist and restrict blood flow to the stomach which is life threatening. .
After being stabilized Oski (my furry kid) was anesthetized and the air, food and liquid were removed from his stomach. The last picture shows his stomach after this was done. .

Repost • My dog almost died last night. He was fine yesterday and then he suddenly wasn’t! .
Around 11pm my husband took him for his bedtime walk but returned quickly when he noticed that Oski kept lying down. He’s 9 so he initially thought maybe he was just tired and brought him back inside. Thankfully he didn’t just go to bed but got me out of bed to check him. One quick look and you could see that his abdomen was very distended and taut. He was not trying to vomit but he was stressed, drooling and panting excessively. Luckily I knew this was an emergency and did not go back to bed. Had we gone to bed and decided to wait till morning he would likely be dead. .
I headed to the ER where they took xrays and confirmed that he had Gastric dilation-volvulus, more commonly known as GDV or bloat. .
He was stabilized and his bloated stomach was decompressed (air, food and liquid removed) and he is in surgery today (gastropexy) to attach his stomach to the body wall so that it can not twist if it ever dilates again. The twisting of rotation of the stomach is why GDV’s are life-threatening. .
I am feeling very grateful that we caught this right away and am so thankful to my colleagues and friends who saved my dog’s life and my husband for noticing something was wrong. .
I wanted to share his story and encourage everyone to see your veterinarian or ER vet if you ever have a concern about your pet. You know your pet best! If you think something is wrong don’t disregard that feeling. You can always call your veterinarian if you aren’t sure if what you are seeing is normal or an actual emergency. Calls are free! So when in doubt please call or check it out- it just might save your pet’s life. .
