Lacerations (cuts) can often not seem serious until the wound is properly prepped for stitches. In this case the carpal joint capsule and cephalic vein was missed by millimeters. You will notice that the cephalic vein was exposed and this wound had to be closed asap.
This boy was very patient while I had to stitch at difficult angles.

The past week was extremely busy with colics and a few viruses.

This morning was especially cold! 🥶 Our drip bags had to be warmed up before administration.

This moment between the groom and patient was so special.

Stay warm! Keep your horses moving and drinking 🤗

An interesting patient for the day: A mini mule. This one day old foal was not planned and the owners were pleasantly surprised. Last night (while waiting on the pregnancy tests) she decided it is time to say hello to the world. Such a sweet little filly. Health check passed! Welcome!

Post stitch up. A technique to reduce any scarring after an extremely deep laceration on this competition horse. The pink area on the laceration line visible is due to hair loss from the trauma.
Careful apposition with little to no tension will allow minimal scarring if any.

Enucleation (removal of the eye) is a necessary procedure when an eye is too damaged to be saved. A ruptured cornea where the gel of the eye is visible (vitreous) is extremely painful and after removing the eye the horses do really well and their pain much less.

Hi all horse owners

Please take note of the heatwave this week. Please keep your horses' hydration in mind. Here are a few tips to help reduce heat stroke in horses.

1. Do not ride your horse during the warmest time of the day.
2. Keep the exercise light and not strenuous.
3. Make sure your horse has access to shade.
4. Make sure your horse has access to fresh water throughout the day.
5. Add water to their morning/lunch/afternoon feed to increase water intake.
6. Monitor their temperature and breathing throughout the day. IF the temperature is elevated and abnormal it is best to hose down your horse and make contact with your veterinarian.
7. LifeCare Mobile Vet is there to help. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to make contact with Dr. Sumari or Dr. Rinel.

Nugget gave everyone quite a scare. She arrived at the clinic with no breathing or a heartbeat.
Quick treatment was given and her breathing and heartbeat came back. As soon as she was stable I referred her to Dr. Tessa (exotics vet) at Family Vet Hazeldean for a full medical work up. Nugget was treated there and is her old self again 🤗
