Saturday is grid work day (in our lockdown routine, anyway). We had a very productive and fun outing, somehow everything felt easier and lighter ... oh yes that’ll be why: no sub zero temperatures, no rain, actual sunshine ☀️ Spring is on its way!

Easing ourselves back into work yesterday after the Big Freeze. Just half an hour in the school and keeping it simple, working to recreate the lovely, trusting, relaxed feel we had out hacking all week - with great results!

It’s not easy being a fine-coated, thin-skinned (and generally a bit precious) thoroughbred when it’s this cold and damp! Complaints have been received about the weather and about the ground being too hard to have fun or comfortably roll in 😂
Hack on the roads again today (with lots of layers on!), but roadwork needn’t be boring! We keep it interesting with halts from the seat aids only, lots of transitions - walk trot walk and within the trot - and a bit of bending and lateral work in walk where it’s safe to do it. Amazing how much you can fit in during a quick whizz round the village and come back both of us feeling more supple and well exercised... and a bit warmer! Putting the happy into happy hacking this week!

Snow ❄️ and ice 🧊 have stopped play the last few days so Charty’s had a mini break in the field with a big pile of hay. Lots of grooming and what some would call pointless general hanging out with your horse, but we see as essential team-building 😊 We are hoping to get out again this afternoon, though. Who else is a bit bored of the big freeze already?

Good grid work session today, with lots to like. Just a couple of minor mistakes but neither of us lost our calm or focus because of them (we are both equally prone to get upset when we get it wrong, so that’s a win). Shorter, focused training sessions work best for Charty, I’ve learnt this the hard way and today we got the balance right, did what we set out to do and finished on a high. Ears forward, happy relaxed horse, smile on my face. Be bold, be brief, be gone! 😂

We train, we laugh, we fail, we learn, we swear occasionally, we love. We put one foot or hoof in front of the other and keep going. Between us we’ve survived years at the sharp end of racing, a ligament injury, colic (him), a bereavement, a breakdown and recovery (me), a few tumbles (both). We are bashed but not broken. We take each day as it comes. We are a team. We are one girl and her thoroughbred.

Today we start telling our story. Because it’s no good waiting for the perfect moment, the great achievements. The perfect moment is now, and the great achievement is our journey itself.
