Northeastern garter snake - Mildly venomous?? (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis) Garter snakes possess mild venom, primarily intended for subduing their prey. However, the toxicity of their venom is considerably low compared to venomous snakes that pose a threat to humans. Garter snake bites are generally harmless and do not lead to severe reactions. I did get bit a couple times by this garter and it did nothing but a little blood. We found her while cleaning up a yard today. We helped get the eye cap off the released her back into the woods. ( We checked to see what sex she was before releasing her)
