Exploring Diverse Paths After Lost Pet Recovery Training :

They leverage their knowledge to address the issue of lost pets. The application of these skills varies, with some individuals using the knowledge in their daily lives when encountering stray or distressed animals. Others establish businesses with a dedicated mission to assist in reuniting lost pets. Many choose to volunteer or work with nonprofit organizations, contributing to the broader cause of animal welfare.

Prevention is KEY when it comes to keeping your furry friends safe.

Here are some essential tips to minimize the risk of your pet getting lost:

Secure Your Property: Always keep gates locked and consider installing security cameras with posted signs.
Supervise Outdoor Time: Keep small pets under supervision when outside.
Build Relationships with Neighbors: Share your contact information and a photo of your pet with neighbors, and ask them to notify you if they spot your pet.
Use Double Door Entrances: Create barriers like screen doors or front gates to prevent pets from escaping when doors are opened.
Keep Cats in Enclosures: Ensure outdoor cats have access to enclosed areas like porches or "catteries."
ID Tags and Microchips: Keep ID tags on your pet at all times and ensure microchip information is up-to-date.

Remember, prevention is the best strategy for keeping your pet safe and sound. Stay vigilant and proactive to minimize the risk of losing your beloved companion.

You may have seen (or heard) Bloodhounds in the Adirondack Mountains this past weekend. Working dogs of various breeds followed by their handlers with businesses and volunteer organizations trained over this weekend in scenarios to prepare them for lost pet searches. One out of every three pets will go missing in their lifetime.

During the three-day training experts addressed lost pet searches in neighborhoods, rural areas, and around lakes and rivers. The handlers and dogs worked on foundation skills and practiced following scent trails. The group learned about scent dynamics and discussed real-world cases and how to train their dogs for alerting when they find their target. Old Forge resident Leo Minnie gave inspiring comments to the group as a guest speaker about training Search Dogs and his father, a Bloodhound handler with law enforcement.

Attendees came from a wide area to join in the unique conference. Lost & Hound Lost Pet Tracking and Recovery Team from Michigan came with 3 team members, Patricia Farnsworth, her assistant and two Cirneco dell'Etna with CdE Scent Detection Dogs traveled from Indiana, Danielle Robertson of Lost Pet Research and Recovery from Massachusetts, Janet Fox with her mixed breed rescue dog from New York, Courtney Hardy from Central Vermont Canine Recovery, and two canine teams came from Canada. Anne Skarzenski brought her two Lagotto Romagnolos and Sandy Hope participated with her rescue Labrador Retriever, Duke.

"I was amazed and energized by the talented search dogs and the dedicated handlers coming together to learn and share information about this little-known service", Annalisa Berns, (Pet Search and Rescue Investigations), added. Berns hosted the training to share information and bring experts in pet detection together.

Nicole Cusanelli, owner and publisher of PI Magazine, Inc. shared expert information from the detective point of view and encouraged the group in their important work in the field of lost pet recovery and the positive impact it has on distraught owners. PI Magazine is the industry magazine for Private Investigators.

Susan Long, Florida Private Investigator and K9 Handler with her two search dogs was a trainer at the weekend conference along with Ethan Cooke.

Search Dogs can find lost people or pets. Most of the time, Search Dogs are trained to either find missing people or pets, not both. Search Dogs are trained to follow their nose, using a “scent article” to match the scent to the missing subject. A scent article is simply something that smells like the missing pet or person, such as a favorite toy or bedding. There are a small number of trained Search Dogs that specialize in finding lost pets. Search Dogs can help find a lost pet and also bring closure if something negative happened to a missing pet.

It is widely accepted that it takes 6 months to 2 years to train a Search Dog. Most of the methods for finding lost pets with Search Dogs were adapted from traditional Search and Rescue techniques for lost people. Of course, lost people and missing pets behave very differently. But that connection, recognized by former police officer Kat Albrecht, has helped recover countless pets.

Gary, a shy and skittish puppy mill rescue, escaped from a boarding facility in the middle of the Southern California desert. After days of fruitless searching with no sign of him, and only coyotes spotted by the search party, hope seemed lost. Flyers, shelters, and social media yielded no leads, and the harsh desert conditions made survival seem impossible.

Twenty long days later, a possible sighting of Gary came in via Facebook, 7 miles away from the escape site. The owners, frantic but living in another state, hired professional Pet Detective Annalisa Berns to check the area with her Search Dogs. Against all odds, the dogs picked up Gary’s scent and found him near a busy highway, surviving on water from a swamp cooler drain and navigating the desert through dry creek-beds.

Gary's owners immediately flew to the location and camped out all night. The next morning, lured by a hamburger, Gary came to his loving owners. They returned home, now complete with their beloved dog Gary. During Gary’s absence, the family had rescued another dog, Moose, who quickly became Gary’s new sibling. Gary received a clean bill of health from the vet and settled back into his routine, now with a bigger family to enjoy.

This heartwarming rescue reminds us to never give up hope. 🐾❤️
