Today marks World Earth Day and as a dedicated to positive environmental change we spoke to the world leading expert of vegan dog food Andrew Knight on his new research that finds:

- Transitioning all dogs to nutritionally-sound vegan diets would spare as many as 6 billion land animals (and billions of aquatic animals) from slaughter, as well as significantly reducing land and water use, greenhouse gas emissions and biocide use.

- All dogs being ‘vegan’ would free up land larger than Saudi Arabia or Mexico and save freshwater volumes greater than all freshwater use in Denmark.

- Vegan dog diets would reduce GHGs (greenhouse gases) by amounts greater than all GHG emissions from South Africa or the UK.

- The numbers of additional people who could be fed using food energy savings associated with canine vegan diets exceeded the 2018 human populations of the entire European Union, which was over 512 million people!

We love our doggos so much that it can be hard to resist their puppy dog eyes when they want a treat or sit next to their bowl until you give them an extra portion. But, this little additional feeds can be detrimental to their weight and health.

The PDSA assessed the weight and general health of nearly 30,000 canine companions across the UK. Over that time, the percentage of overweight dogs seen has risen from around one-in three (35%) to more than half (50%).

Antibiotic resistance is a major risk for human kind and dog kind. How can it be avoided? A plant-based diet can certainly help as will not consuming meat / dairy where the animals are fed antibiotics to keep them alive.

Researchers looked for antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) against sulfa drugs like bactrim, tetracyclines, penicillins and cephalosporins, and streptomycin-type antibiotics. And… both omnivores and vegetarians showed a significantly higher antibiotic-resistant gene load in their guts as compared with vegans.

B12 is always brought up when it comes to vegan / plant-based diets.

While animal foods contain high amounts of protein-bound vitamin B12, they are 1) only high in B12 due to the supplement being added to animal feed and 2) are not an ideal source for vitamin B12 for two main reasons:

Firstly, the protein-bound B12 in animal foods can be difficult for some people to absorb, particularly those who don’t have appropriate amounts of gastric acid to cleave the protein from the vitamin.

Second, animal foods are not the best source because consuming them increases our levels of IGF-1 (a hormone consistently associated with increased cancer risk and tumor growth), TMAO (a substance that injures the lining of our blood vessels and promotes the formation of cholesterol plaques), as well as other unhealthy substances such as heme iron, which is associated with oxidative stress and the formation of free radicals.

Vitamin B12 is an important and necessary nutrient. However, animal foods are not the best source due to the health issues noted above. Everyone & their dogs (regardless of their diet) should monitor their B12 levels and ensure they have a reliable source by taking a vitamin supplement or eating B12-fortified plant foods (such as THE PACK for your doggo). In the end, avoiding vitamin B12 deficiencies is easy and inexpensive, but it is something we should be mindful of.
