Belated Happy New Year to everybody. I just want to let everybody know that we will be closed until the end of February for home boarding. Our Buddy is not well. He had a procedure done on Monday and it wasn't all good news. We need some time to get him on his feet with as much rest as possible. All existing bookings will be honoured. Thank you for understanding.

Westie Rescue Ireland

Westie Rescue Ireland

We're getting a LOT of Westies in over the past couple of years who are being surrendered because there's a new child in the home. Now, it might be that the owners just don't have the time any more to devote to the Westie, or it might be that the Westie really isn't enjoying having to live in close proximity to the child... a very common occurrence with the breed. I'm not going to judge anyone, if they genuinely can't manage any more, there are far worse things than rehoming your dog to a good home.

I'm not in the habit of berating owners for surrendering their dogs, it's not really my thing. However, here's where I have to admit I get upset and angry with people: In waaaay too many of these Westie vs baby cases, it takes the owners quite a long time to finally make the decision to let the dog go, trying to convince themselves that it'll all work out in the end.

Their first move, when they realise that things are not going well on the dog-front, is to start putting the dog out into the garden for a few hours every day. Those few hours develop into longer and longer hours spent alone in the garden, until the poor oul Westie is outside alone for most of the time. It's only when they start barking a lot, or they develop stress-related health problems, or they become manky because they're living outside, or the garden becomes covered in faeces, or the guilt gets the better of the owners, that they finally decide to let the Westie go.

But by this stage, the dog has been months, maybe even a year or two out in the garden.

Folks, it is so bloody unfair to do this to a dog. And it is a real kick in the arse for a dog that has been used to living inside, that has been used to being at the center of things, that was the baby until the real baby came along :-(

If your banish your Westie to the garden for months, remember that's a big chunk of his life that's gone to waste, that he could have spent enjoying the company and love he'd get if he was placed into a new home with someone who really wants him, and wants to love him.

He won't miss you as much as you think he will (sorry... but it's true!). You will not be letting him down by letting him go. There is no need to feel guilty for letting him go... but there is need to feel guilty if you leave him outside to rot in the garden, now a sad and lonely inconvenience.

Don't wait for months to make the decision. Just do it. The moment you make that decision to move him out to the garden, let him go... I'll take him, and find him a home where he is the apple of their eye once again.

Apologies for my rant. But every time I collect a Westie from this situation, my sadness for the dog stays with me for days. There's no need for it. I just want owners to know that it's okay to let your Westie go if you can't care for him properly any more.
