Trifecta foot update: 66 days after surgery

Trifecta has been back to normal activity for about 3 weeks. In the pictures from today you can see a small area of the scar that currently has a scab (close to my thumb). This is because of how active she is, location of the wound and how thin the scar tissue is (notice the shine to the skin in the 2nd pucture). She will continue to develop small areas on the scar that may bleed and scab over. Over time that scar tissue should thicken and decrease the chances of injuries.

Last Saturday, it was discovered that Trifecta had a mass on her hind foot. It appeared to look like the start of a lick granuloma.

Within 4 days, the mass got two times larger and angrier.

On Thursday we did a FNA, Fine Needle Aspirate. MCT, Mast Cell Tumor cells were seen along with other cells indicating inflammation.

Because of her age, breed, location and rapid growth, I did not want to wait on a punch biopsy of the mass before removel. There was a chance it would not respond to medications and get even larger.

I made the decision to have it removed the same day knowing that because of the size and location, it will be impossible to have enough skin to close the wound.

The mass was removed, fingers crossed we got all of it. An additional incision was made further up to dissect away skin to move down to help close the wound.

Because the skin was very tight, about 12 additional incisions, left open, were made all around the area to relase tension.

Trifecta will be having many bandage changes to be sure that there is no infection, the skin isn't dying and we are seeing second intention healing of the wound.

So far, it has been going well. She is acting more like this is an inconvenience for her.

Please have positive thoughts that the biopsy comes back as either nothing or, if it is MCT, we got it all.
