East Yorkshire Wildlife Rehab Wildlife Rehabilitation in East Yorkshire All birds, small mammals, and more. Bring to us or give us details on where collection is needed.
(1)

We cover East Yorkshire - includes Beverley, Driffield, Bridlington, Easington, Hornsea, Hull, Withernsea and all surrounding villages. For injured cats and dogs, please contact the RSPCA. We take in wildlife of all kinds for rehabilitation from illness or injury.

05/12/2023

We have recently received multiple messages from people wanting to bring Wildlife in to us that they have held on to for several days before making contact. We must absolutely stress that delaying when an animal gets proper care can mean the difference between surviving or not.

Infections can take hold within hours, and no animal should be kept in a home without proper pain relief, antibiotics, or nutrition. Some have had broken legs or wings, and have been left for half a day or even several days before help has been sought. We wouldn't do this to ourselves or children. :(

Vets can and do take on Wildlife for help and we can take them on from there if they are viable for rehabilitation. You won't be charged for the care, and you will be helping that animal have the best chance of survival. We absolutely understand the desire to help and absolutely applaud those who stop to help. However please help us, to help them, have the best chance at being a wild animal again.

25/06/2023

We are trying to answer all requests as often as we can, but please be aware if we are out on rescues we may not be able to answer.

If you find an injured animal especially one that has been there a while, please try to get them to a vet as soon as possible. We will happily chat with the vet to arrange bringing it in to us if it is okay, but we've had an influx of very injured animals being brought all the way to us which are suffering and beyond help. This means we have to travel them again to get them put to sleep. This doesn't benefit the animal at all, only prolongs their suffering.
If an animal is viable for rehabilitation, we have to get them seen by a vet to authorise treatment - again if they are injured, this means their pain or discomfort is prolonged.

We are taking in as many as we can which sadly is reduced due to avian influenza. Your support is massively appreciated and your understanding if we cannot take in everything. We get over 20 requests for help a DAY which we can't get to everything.

Please help us to help them

We're getting over 35 messages a day at the moment asking for our help with wildlife. We work as a family to help give them all the best chance they've got, round the clock, 24/7.

From hedgehogs to herring gulls and foxes to rabbits. They all need housing, feeding, medication and time.

Because we are self funded, taking in so many animals very rapidly drains our money, which can limit the number we can take in if particular medication and food bills have been high. Which means donations can make an enormous difference!

Please, please consider donating a few pounds to help us to help them.

£5 buys a Kestrel chick food for 4 days
£20 buys a Fox food for a whole week
£100 pays the medication bills for at least 3 animals!

Plans to update this page more often go out the window in spring!

We're getting an alarming amount of calls and messages at the moment regarding baby birds. As always, please keep an eye on them and keep pets away before picking them up and moving them away. Many fledglings will hang around looking helpless, hoping their parents will return to feed them rather than have to learn to do it themselves.

Also, if you find birds with legs and wings hanging off - please do not wait for rehabs to reply. It's best to get them to a vet as quickly as possible, as trying to bring them to a rehab will often hugely delay the pain relief they need or alleviation of their suffering.

As always, thank you to everyone who has been in touch this busy last few months and thank you for the support! We massively need your help to help the wildlife that come through the doors.

Thank you!

A little bit of happiness for these confusing times

We released Winston today back to where he came from. He was admitted 9 weeks ago with a fractured left metacarpal (lower bone in his wing). It's healed remarkably well and today he went back out to where he belongs. He's also marked so he can be monitored if he hangs around. So proud of him!
Happy days

Because of Lockdown, we kept our rescues quiet last year as we didn't feel it was right to ask for donations. We fund all veterinary & care costs ourselves, often with the bills being several hundred a month. Any donation goes directly towards treatments, medication and food for the wildlife we have in our care. We hate to ask, but any penny at all would massively, massively help us!

We're going to try and get back to more regular posts this year. Last year we kept it quiet because of covid and our funding took a big hit. It didn't feel right to be asking for help.

This is a gorgeous male Pheasant named Trevor who is actually on our property. He is limping at the moment so we have been feeding him regularly to get him more used to us. The hope is we can catch him with less stress and get him treated. He's absolutely beautiful and such a character!
If you listen with the sound on, you can hear him clucking away.

Huge thank you to those who have sponsored us some equipment in the last few weeks from our Amazon Wish List. It's hugely appreciated and we have already put it all to great use!

It's certainly busy times right now!

We must stress that if you find any baby birds, please observe them from a distance unless they're in immediate danger or visibly injured and see if an adult comes back to feed them before taking action. They are all fledging and will often hide until the parents return. This sometimes only happens when they are chirping.

It's easy to mistake this as a bird has been abandoned and starving, but it is often them soliticing for food and letting the adult know where they are. It's a hard way to gradually learn to fend for themselves, but is a process they must go through.

Picking them up removes them from that learning process and causes unnecessary stress to that animal which often finds it's self in a rehab. This means vital time, funds and food is spent on youngsters that could have fended for themselves.
Of course there are many instances where they do need some help.
If you're ever unsure, always ask someone for advice - we're more than happy to advice and step in!

It's an amazing experience watching babies learning these steps, so enjoy the nature you're blessed to be living with :)

Stay safe everyone!

20/04/2020

We hope you are all safe!

We are still actively taking in wildlife during this Lockdown but have reduced people available to collect. So far it's not caused issues so we want to say a big thank you.

We are happy to say that we have had a reduction of wildlife coming in with injuries related to cars though I am concerned for all the young wildlife when the lockdown is reduced and people can drive more again.

Sadly we have seen more cases of poisoned raptors in the last few weeks which are being followed up with relevant agencies.

Stay safe out there everyone

Em & EYWR x

We have seen some very sad cases of hedgehogs recently. Those with severe illnesses or injuries from bonfires and strimming.
Please keep an eye out for these wonderful little creatures whenever you can.

The work we do means we are privileged to treat & rehab a wide variety of species. For example this juvenile Short Eared Owl we took in late last night after a collision with a vehicle we happened to witness ourselves which sadly resulted in a broken wing.

Sharing our GFM page again - it will massively help us as we are expecting another busy winter!

You can donate from as little as £5 via GoFundMe and it goes directly to the care of the new wildlife we take in on an almost daily basis.

We have had an extremely high in-take of wildlife the past 8 weeks, and it doesn't look set to settle any time soon with an underweight little Hedgehog taken in last night.

So I've taken the decision to create a fundraising page. EYWR is run completely voluntarily with all funds towards veterinary medication, food and housing from my own pocket. I offer a 24/7, 365 days a week service covering all of East Yorkshire.

I hate to ask but please consider helping us out as it would make such a huge difference. We also have an Amazon Wishlist if you'd like to directly sponsor equipment too. Every pound really does help. X

This collapsed little male hedgehog was brought in to us recently. He was anaesthetised when stable to have ticks removed as he was in considerable pain.

Can you guess how many we removed? (Clue: MANY more than the 5 you can see in the photo!)

We had a special moment today.
Two wild rabbits we released a month ago were spotted again today amongst the apple trees near where they were released. They came to us only 4 days old and were hand raised before being prepped for living wild.

It's wonderful to see them again! Fully wild, fully independent and thriving. We don't often get to see the wildlife we rehabilitate and release ever again, so this was a special moment and shows our methods work time and time again!

We also specialise in sea birds! This was a Gannet brought in to us a couple of months ago that was lightly oiled and covered in parasites found locally. Once stabilised and hydrated, he was moved on to a larger rehabilitation facility for his final stint of getting ready to head back in to the wild.
They are incredible birds and can hit water up to 60mph when diving. Fun fact - they don't have external nostrils!

I'll get around to posting the 20+ patients we have had this month when I get chance!

We need a name! This is a little female hog that was brought in very dehydrated & we removed over 30 ticks from her! She's staying with us a short while and will be released back to the wild soon.

If you would like to name her, please consider sponsoring us! Purchasing from our Amazon wish list means you know exactly what your money goes towards and it sends it directly to us too! We are self-funded so all equipment and vet fees are paid by my own pocket. Your support really does make a difference!

We have had an influx of patients recently, one of them sadly was a Crow that died last night.
If you find a bird in distress, please don't feed them milk and bread. This compromised bird could have potentially had a better chance, but the amount of food they're naturally intolerant to sadly didn't help. Not to mention had other issues making digestion difficult.

We completely understand that anyone would want to help, but the best measure is to get them to a wildlife rehab or a vet as soon as possible to give them the best chance of surviving :)

As always thank you for your support!

Apologies for the lack of updates, it's been manic!

Tyto the Barn Owl was successfully released and he was seen hunting which is the best result we could hope for! He was seen off by the people who originally found him 2 months previously

We have had lots of little youngsters coming in with it being late Spring - mainly Hares, Rabbits and small garden birds. Plus two Tawnys. Tonight we have taken in another, so I shall get some updates up :)
