While it’s a common equine emergency, espophageal obstruction (“choke”) can look alarming, especially if you've never seen it before. Unlike in human medicine, where choking refers to a tracheal (or windpipe) obstruction, choke in horses refers to an obstruction of the esophagus, the muscular tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach.

Most commonly, choking occur when horses eat concentrated feed too quickly without chewing it appropriately, which results in a firm bolus lodged in the animal's esophagus. However, esophageal obstruction can also occur with hay or straw, hard treats, carrots, or nonfood objects. Poor dentition, which leads to inadequate chewing, is also a frequent cause of choke.

While common, chokes can have serious consequences so be sure to call your veterinarian as soon as you notice signs of choke. A bad choke is fairly obvious to both veterinarians and horse owners, but a mild choke could be confused with an upper respiratory tract infection or colic.

Read more about this condition on our website at https://aaep.org/horsehealth/understanding-choke-horses

To rug or not to rug….that is the question!

And what a question it is - inspiring hot debate on both sides of the fence (pun intentional)

It’s actually a very easy one to address - there isn’t any horse that needs a heavyweight when it’s still 12-15 degrees over night. The End!

It’s that simple

If you’re horse is clipped, you don’t want them filthy, they are older, they feel the cold, they are under weight etc you are not going to cause massive heat stress by putting a lightweight on or a rain mac.

I stand by my 2 weather rule this time of year and in spring…

Cold and wet
Wet and windy
Windy and cold

They can have a rug but always the lightest appropriate option and I only use a combo in the very worst weather imaginable - other than that - standard neck

Avalon is clipped and currently in a 50g, Boris has a comparably fine coat, not yet clipped and in just a rain mac when the 2 weather rule dictates.

Just be sensible, don’t feel like a bad owner for rugging or not rugging - but don’t whack them in a 350g just because you’ve reached for your duck down gilet

The tickets to our benefit barn bash scheduled for September 30th have arrived. Those of you that have already paid for your tables will be getting your tickets this week. If you haven’t paid for your tables yet, but are on the reservation list, please be sure to reach out to Kayla directly and she will send you the address as to where the check should be mailed to. If you are interested in getting a table or individual tickets please reach out to Kayla Etheridge at (209) 534–5856 to reserve your spot. 🤠

Several of you have been reaching out, asking how you can help OER have a successful benefit barn bash. Below are some ways that we can definitely use some help. It takes a village to put one of these events together, and we are super grateful for the tremendous help from our local businesses and community. Please note that we are able to provide those that donate to our silent and live auction a letter for a tax write off for any items donated.
