Good day everyone,

Those of us at Hay Plus Farms would like to share our concern about a trend we have seen emerge at the beginning of this year's hay season. I have noticed many people promoting first and second-cutting alfalfa as safe for your horses. This has traditionally been taboo as the protein and relative feed value are so high that kidney problems and laminitis (founder) are at much higher risk. Historically, the first 3 cuttings between late January to early May is what’s called “test hay” meaning it tests high enough to promote high milk production in dairy milk cows (wet cows). In late May, as it starts to warm up, you will notice more bloom (purple flowers) on alfalfa fields. The plant has now put its energy into the flower. When this happens we grow dry cow hay for the non-milking heifers at a dairy also known as dry cows. The fiber levels go up and protein levels go down. This is much safer for your horses. For some background, this year the export market has slowed way down, milk prices are down, and currently there is a $60-$90 per ton gap between what a dairy is willing to pay versus what the retail consumer is willing to pay. Therefore, many people are selling 3-string alfalfa to the general public because higher profits can be made.
We don't intend to tell you what to do, but we want to help you make an educated decision.
Here are some things you may look for to identify test hay.
1) Is the hay super soft, meaning when you pull on the bale strings does the bale fold over.
2) No purple flower.
3) large stemmed but super soft hay. What we call ropy.
4) extremely green.
5) Or most importantly ask your supplier what cutting they are bringing you.

In conclusion, it doesn’t take long for a vet bill to significantly outpace the dollar or two you save on a bale of hay. We realize each person has different approaches and opinions; our recommendation is, unless you have milk cows, do not buy the first three cuttings of the year. Hay Plus Farms will not even carry it at our yard because of the liability. The hay pictured below is first cutting alfalfa, and may help you know what to look for.

MYTH: Coastal Bermuda Hay Causes Colic.

FACT: Bermudagrass hay that has been harvested correctly is a perfectly safe feed for horses. Bermuda hay should be harvested every 21 days during peak growing season to ensure the grass has not become too mature. The more mature the grass is the higher the NDF content will be in the hay. NDF (neutral detergent fiber) is a measure of indigestible fiber. Correlations have been made between high NDF content in hay and increased chance of impaction colic due to the hay being less digestible. Bottom line, it is not the type of hay, but rather the time of harvest that should be used to evaluate the quality and safety of feeding bermuda hay.

AAHS POLICIES AND GUIDELINES
1.Deliveries will continue with best efforts made for timely delivery and stacking of all orders. Priority will be given for any/all customer in danger of running out of food for their animals.
2.Safe distancing will be our policy (separation of 6ft) between staff and clients.
3.Wash our hands and/or use disinfectant before and after each delivery.
4.Equipment will be wiped down with Lysol of Clorox wipes daily.
5.Payment is recommended in unsealed envelopes or paypal.

We are going to begin testing our Bermuda grass hay again for nutritional results and posting them on our page. So owners that require certain dietary parameters for the horses will be able to balance our hay. 

We can offer testing for alfalfa hay too if there is enough interest. Generally alfalfa runs very high in protein and calcium, and may require balancing within your horses diet as well.
