TRAINING THE AMERICAN BULLDOG
The AB is foremost a utility breed based off of a combination of Mastiff and Bulldog traits. They are naturally adept at guarding and therefore have low to moderate prey drives. They are natural, instinctive guardians and should exercise discretionary protection upon sensing what they perceive as a threat to them or their ward, whether it is their human family or property. However, there is no denying that over the years, the AB has been bred to be versatile; able to easily adapt to whatever we require of it. Of course some bloodlines are quite known to perform well in specific fields, i.e. IGP, catchwork, etc. And it is by selective breeding and design that we are able to find specific dogs that are able to perform specific tasks. But of course, there are those exceptional dogs that do excel in many diffirent disciplines and perform outstandingly well on it. Such is the type and quality of the AB’s versatility as a breed.
Training the American Bulldog to do or excel in a particular sport poses a huge deal of challenge to anyone. I have seen and met so many a trainer who would claim to be able to train ‘any breed’, specially the AB — guaranteed…, only to bail after a session or two. I have even heard one declare that ABs are naturally “untrainable”. These people don’t know dogs! They seem to fail to recognize that dogs (dog breeds) have their own unique traits, drives and thresholds to consider in order to say whether or not the dog/s is/are even trainable and can perform a task/function that is NOT naturally theirs. One has to find that dog.
According to Dave Putnam…,
“Our breed is extremely quirky or idiosyncratic. Bulldogs are therefore hard to pigeonhole or make generalized statements about. Some of the quirky behavior seems to come from a high level of intelligence and a suspicious nature.
Training ABs means that we have to think on our feet and adjust for the odd quirks that Bulldogs throw at us.”
Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that we find a trainer who understands the true American Bulldog and not just hire some schmoe who’s just there to quickly take your buck.
We have seen excellent examples of ABs who excelled, during their time, in a field where Herders reign supreme. D’Crusher’s POS Justice MR2, Kamadala’s Kovu MR1 and his son Kamadala’s Zazu are those dogs in this side of the pond. They were worked on by exceptionally knowledgeable handlers/owners and trainers to excel in a field not traditionally trekked by the breed. A knowledgeable trainer working on the American Bulldog makes the whole exercise look like an artwork. Putting it all together to reveal the total package, he creates a masterpiece.
